If the energy is released in the form of a fast particle, then it does not have to depend on diffusion. A fast particle will rip through a lattice at high speed, leaving a trail of ionized atoms in it's wake. Note that if this fast particle then goes on to trigger other fusion reactions, which also create fast particles, then you get a branching effect, the debris of which looks like an inverted cone.
