After two back operations, I understand the frustration and agonizing
pain that becomes you daily companion.

Some little trick that have helped me:

Good firm mattress (absolutly no waterbed, even though they are
advertized with lumbar support)
Sleep on your back, stuff a pillow under your knees it help reduce
lower back strain.
Get a desk chair that is fully adjustable to allow your feet to rest on
the floor with a slight elevation of the knees. I find that a foot rest
helps. Above all, the chair must have good lower back support.
Give up the small sports cars with low bucket seats in an almost
reclining position and standard transmission for a larger car where you
sit in a more upright position and have an automatic transmission (SUVs
are a very comfortable car)
Walk, avoid stairs and steep slopes.
Never bend from the waist; always bend from the knees.
When tying shoe laces, sit and bring your foot up.

I have had fair luck with chiropracters. Some of the physical therapy
provided my regular doctors has caused more problems than cures.
(Afterall, doctors are just PRACTICING medicine; I'm looking forward to
when they get out of the practice mode!!)

There is nothing wrong with some bed rest. Good luck!
