Brett,
Most of the time setting up an NT server with software is just waiting for it to copy
stuff around, so I usually do something else while it's doing its thing. I haven't
looked at SAMBA, but yes Service Pack 3 includes changes to how NT handles its
passwords
internally. I've done a basic Linux installation in about half a day and then had to
figure out what else I needed.
You had mentioned problems with NT apps fighting with each other which is why I said
that I had not had that particular problem.
Unix flavours are great for some things, and not so great for others. I can't run
Corel
Draw under unix, or half the other programs I run, yet they run under win95 and NT. I
happen to like the ability to develop an Access application that can work on the web or
as a standalone application. I happen to like the speed in which I can develop an app
in Cold Fusion, and my customers do as well because it saves them money. My clients do
not need to buy NT or Cold Fusion or Access for that matter in order to make it all
work, so the cost of an NT server is only reflected in slightly higher hosting fees.
