And DECENT backgrounds that don't detract from the actual text that
you want the readers to read!
Time and again, we see the web site that had a heavy graphic on top,
and nothing to tell you what is there, but there is the description on the
search engine page... So they vote "Next!"-click. Cone!
On the heavy hitting sites, one starts running into ISP/Site related
bandwidth issues, such as incremental fees for more traffic. Many things
can be done with the use of tables for layout, colored table backgrounds,
colored fonts, etc. to minimize the need for graphics, reduce bandwidth
issues, and speed the information to the user.
Basically, I see web pages as information content. Good information
content is text based with pictures and diagrams as secondary items used
to enhance the content that people sought out. Most Western Educated
people live in the verbal side of their brains, and search the web using
words. We need to cater to them, for they are our customers. (This from a
former photographer...) Nothing wrong with a beautiful splash page... but
that is less likely to be the first page they hit, or stay on if they are
motivated buyers. I see some of "my" web pages printed out, e-mailed to
others, etc. It isn't the graphics, color, or layout, it is the content
the doctor provided. People print out the pages, scribble their notes in
the margins, and take them to their doctor. Why? Content and motivation.
When the two meet, the printed form will outlast the web form.
If you want really great sites and great pages, first find the
motivation, then build the site around that! And for that, you need to
talk to real, live customers. Listen to their language, their imprecise
(or precise) terminology, their needs and desires. Then turn those into
core words you can build pages around. People first!
