Bush Portrait Label To Be Corrected
http://tinyurl.com/7qo87x

National Portrait Gallery director Martin E. Sullivan replied today to a
letter sent Jan. 7 by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), who was concerned about
an inaccuracy in a museum wall label next to the newly acquired official
portrait of President Bush. The National Portrait Gallery is a branch of
the Smithsonian Institution.

The original label said "the attacks on September 11, 2001... led to wars
in Afghanistan and Iraq." Sanders objected to the link between 9/11 and
the Iraq invasion.

In his letter, Sullivan agreed to make the change: "Our label was not
intended to imply that there was a causal connection between the attacks
that occurred on 9/11 and the subsequent U.S. invasion of Iraq...I
appreciate your concern, however, about the words 'led to.' We will revise
the label and delete the words 'led to.'" Sanders expressed his gratitude
for the prompt response and the correction.

What the caption SHOULD say:

"Mr. Bush, through his lack of vision and lack of character, triggered the
steepest decline in American and world history. Under his flawed
stewardship, the Constitution was regularly breached without redress,
thousands of citizens were killed and maimed pointlessly in misguided wars
sold on false pretenses, the nation's treasury was bankrupted, corruption
penetrated every corner of government and society, the US and global
economies crashed in the worst crisis in the last 70 years, and what was
perhaps the last, best chance to prevent catastrophic greenhouse effects
was foregone.

Moreover, through his stolen election, subsequent actions, and success in
deflecting justice, Bush effectively reversed the two-century-long global
march toward what previously appeared to be an inevitable arrival of
democracy in all the nations of the earth - a truly stunning and
world-historic achievement."

The Bush Verdict Is In
http://tinyurl.com/98gr57

.. Here is Bush's legacy, in part:

He took the nation to a war of choice under false pretenses -- and left
troops in harm's way on two fields of battle. He embraced torture as an
interrogation tactic and turned the world's champion of human dignity into
an outlaw nation and international pariah. He watched with detachment as a
major American city went under water. He was ostensibly at the helm as the
worst financial crisis since the Great Depression took hold. He went from
being the most popular to the most disappointing president, having
squandered a unique opportunity to unite the country and even the world
behind a shared agenda after Sept. 11. He set a new precedent for avoiding
the general public in favor of screened audiences and seemed to occupy an
alternate reality. He took his own political party from seeming permanent
majority status to where it is today. And he deliberately politicized the
federal government, circumvented the traditional policymaking process,
ignored expert advice and suppressed dissent, leaving behind a broken
government. ...

Report Raps Bradley Schlozman, Former Justice Department Official, for
Political Bias
http://abcnews.go.com/TheLaw/DOJ/story?id=6637861

A former Justice Department official discriminated against liberal job
applicants at the department and then made false statements to Congress on
the matter, according to a Justice Department report released Tuesday.

The probe, conducted by two watchdog groups within the department,
reviewed "allegations that political or ideological affiliations were
considered in hiring, transferring and assigning cases to career attorneys
in the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice," specifically
under former DOJ official Bradley Schlozman, who held an interim post at
the head of the division.

According to the report, Schlozman circumvented many of his colleagues and
arranged the hiring of lesser-qualified applicants based on their
conservative political ideology.

The jobs involved were not political appointments but career positions for
which candidates, according to federal law and guidelines, are to be
selected for their qualifications, not their political or ideological
leanings. ...

After their review of e-mails and other messages from Schlozman and
interviews with his former colleagues, the investigators found that he
"favored applicants with conservative political or ideological
affiliations and disfavored applicants with civil rights or human rights
experience whom he considered to be overly liberal." ...

Schlozman testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee in June 2007,
and under questioning from lawmakers, he said that he "did not" violate
government statutes, which state that a candidate's political ideology
cannot be considered when hiring for a so-called career position.

Based on Schlozman's statements during the hearing and his written
responses to lawmakers' questions, investigators concluded that he was not
truthful in his testimony. ...

Schlozman, who now works for a law firm in Wichita, Kan., resigned from
the department in September 2007, so he will not face any reprimand from
the government. As noted in the report and by Jordan, the U.S. Attorney's
office in Washington, D.C., received the report last year but declined to
take any action against Schlozman. ...

Doesn't it seem a little odd that when you have a former ball player, like
Roger Clemens, who allegedly lies to Congress about steroid use in
baseball, the U.S. Attorney for DC convenes a grand jury to consider a
perjury indictment, but when an official of the Justice Department, like
Bradley Schlozman, allegedly (but very documented!) lies to Congress about
trying to politicize the civil service within DOJ, the U.S. Attorney for
DC passes on further investigation or prosecution?

Which really seems like the more significant problem for the country?

Let The Bidding Begin: Dick Cheney's Writing A Book
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2009/01/dick-cheney.html

[M]ost everybody pictured Vice President Cheney next week heading out of
Dodge after the inauguration and virtually four decades of inside
government experience -- and fishing, enjoying Wyoming, "family", creeping
out his six grandchildren, shooting people in the face, pulling the wings
off flies, all that.

He will.

But Cheney, the silent sly one who's words were mostly saved for the ears
of the president, just told Sean Hannity today that he's seriously
considering writing a book.

"I never have," Cheney said. "and my family has been bugging me about it.
I've got 40 years since I came to town to stay 12 months. I've got a lot
of stories to tell. And a few scores to settle." ...

[okay, some of that might be made up.... but it's still true!]

Vice Presidential Handlers Lure Cheney Into Traveling Crate
http://www.theonion.com/content/news_briefs/vice_presidential_handlers

A team of nine specially trained handlers have successfully lured outgoing
vice president Dick Cheney into a reinforced steel traveling crate in
order to transport him back to his permanent enclosure in Casper, WY,
official sources reported Monday.

"He's a smart one. Once he sees the crate, he gets pretty nippy, but we've
learned a few tricks over the years," chief VP wrangler Ted Irving
breathlessly said while applying pressure to a deep gash on his forearm.
"If we break a rabbit's legs and throw it in there, he will eventually go
in to finish it off. Doesn't work with dead rabbits, though. Cheney only
eats what he kills."

Irving said that the latest vice presidential relocation went much more
smoothly than September's diplomatic trip to Georgia, which was delayed
for several hours after Cheney mauled three secret service agents and
escaped inside the White House walls.
