"Vermont passed a same-sex marriage law Friday the same day Iowa's Supreme
Court upheld same-sex marriage. It's a constitutional issue. They've made the
case that same-sex couples can love each other just as much as straight couples
love their guns."

Gay Shortage Puts Damper On Iowa Marriage Ruling
http://www.crystalair.com/content.php?id=92200904004
The Iowa Supreme Court's decision to allow same-sex marriage under the state's
constitution could be muted by the fact that the state has no gay people,
according to many residents.
"I'm pretty sure that if we had homosexuals here, I would know about it," said
Fred Cranston, a selectman and real estate agent in Elk Run Heights, Iowa.
"We're usually playing catch-up on that type of thing. We didn't even really
have black people here until the late '90s."
He acknowledged that people like "old Karl," an African-American who's run the
local junkyard since the mid-'60s, would be an exception to that, but that "he
doesn't really count - he's just regular folk."
Still, many in this small town and others around the state seem flummoxed by
the court's decision, saying they don't know anybody who'd qualify to take
advantage of same-sex marriage rights.
"I mean, there was talk about that barber, Luis, from the haircut place, but
those were just rumors," said Chuck Branson of Malvern, Iowa. "He just wants
the freedom of not being tied down to a wife and kids so he can go on those
cruises he likes, and those, waddaya call 'em, spa weeks.
"At least that's what he told my wife when he was doing her highlights," said
Branson.
And in nearby Pacific Junction, Amway representative Norma Miller says her
community is similarly gay-bereft.
"I know some people were wondering about Amy and Kate who run the feed store,
but they're just good friends who happen to live and own a business together,"
said Miller. "They have to wear their hair short like that so they don't get
fertilizer in it." ...
Meanwhile, gays or no gays, many - like farmer Bud "Buddy" Langston of
Belvidere Township - say they're extremely disappointed by the court's
decision. Talking to a CAP News reporter on his livestock farm, Langston said
the decision "will lead no place good," as he gently sheared a large Leicester
sheep. "Next thing people will be marrying their farm animals.
"Speaking of which, do you know if that's something they're considering?" he
asked. "I have, uh, a friend who would be interested in knowing about that."

that I haven't been sucked into it in a while."

Gay Marriage Ruling Could Prompt Run For Governor

Monday night, April 6, was the first time the Iowa Senate discussed the
unanimous decision by the Iowa Supreme Court to allow same sex couples to
marry. During the discussion, Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal of Council
Bluffs made clear he would not agree to suspend the rules to allow a vote on an
amendment to reverse the court decision....
"One of my daughters was in the workplace one day, and her particular workplace
at that moment in time, there were a whole bunch of conservative, older men.
And those guys were talking about gay marriage. They were talking about
discussions going on across the country. And my daughter Kate, after listening
for about 20 minutes, said to them: 'You guys don't understand. You've already
lost. My generation doesn't care.' I think I learned something from my daughter
that day, when she said that. And I've talked with other people about it and
that's what I see, Senator McKinley. I see a bunch of people that merely want
to profess their love for each other, and want state law to recognize that. Is
that so wrong? I don't think that's so wrong. As a matter of fact, last Friday
night, I hugged my wife You know I've been married for 37 years. I hugged my
wife. I felt like our love was just a little more meaningful last Friday night
because thousands of other Iowa
citizens could hug each other and have the state recognize their love for each
other. No, Senator McKinley, I will not co-sponsor a leadership bill with you."

IOWA'S FAMILY VALUES
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/09/opinion/09thrasher.html
If it weren't for Iowa, my family may never have existed, and this gay,
biracial New Yorker might never have been born.
In 1958, when my mother, who was white, and father, who was black, wanted to
get married in Nebraska, it was illegal for them to wed. So they decided to go
next door to Iowa, a state that was progressive enough to allow interracial
marriage. My mom's brother tried to have the Nebraska state police bar her from
leaving the state so she couldn't marry my dad, which was only the latest legal
indignity she had endured. She had been arrested on my parents' first date,
accused of prostitution. (The conventional thought of the time being: Why else
would a white woman be seen with a black man?)
On their wedding day, somehow, my parents made it out of Nebraska without
getting arrested again, and were wed in Council Bluffs, Iowa, on March 1, 1958.
This was five years before Nebraska would strike down its laws against
interracial marriage, and almost a decade before the Supreme Court would outlaw
miscegenation laws throughout the country in Loving v. Virginia. ...
That I almost cried last week upon reading that the Iowa Supreme Court
overturned the state law banning same-sex marriage will therefore come as no
surprise. I'm still struck by one thought: over the years, I've met so many gay
émigrés who felt it was unsafe to be gay in so-called flyover country and fled
for the East and West coasts. But as a gay man, I can't marry in "liberal" New
York, where I'm a resident, or in "liberal" California, where I was born, and
very soon I will have that right in "conservative" Iowa. ...

VERMONT APPROVES GAY MARRIAGE
http://blogs.usatoday.com/ondeadline/2009/04/vermont-approves-gay-marriage.html
Vermont today became the fourth state to legalize gay marriage -- and the first
to do so with a legislature's vote. The Burlington Free Press reports that Gov.
Jim Douglas' veto of a bill allowing gays and lesbians to marry was overturned
by a 23-5 vote in the state Senate and 100-49 in the House.
Under Vermont law, two-thirds of each chamber had to vote for override.
Vermont becomes the fourth state to permit same-sex marriage, joining
Massachusetts, Connecticut and Iowa. Their approval of gay marriage came from
the courts.

Tonight I am announcing that until either gay marriage is repealed or the
legislature there is impeached, I will be boycotting Vermont. The entire state
and anything that has the least bit of connection to Vermont. This means I will
not be visiting Vermont, will not be using maple syrup on my pancakes, nor Ben
& Jerry's "Cherry Garcia" as my lubricant of choice; not even Cabot's award
winning Vermont Cheddar Cheese when I'm a little loose down there and need
something "binding", if you know what I mean.
I realize that not all Vermonters may have voted for gay marriage. In fact I'm
not sure if anyone did. But as an objective journalist I have no choice but to
ruin the economy of a state where the people would rather stomach this vile
liberal legislation than leave. Not being a man of reckless vindictiveness, and
believing you'd have to be a drunken female in a halter top just asking to be
raped or a teen-aged hostage of a sexual deviant who liked his situation to
accept this, this, this heathen Godlessness, I am giving the clearheaded
conservative Vermont folk 48 hours notice to leave the state before I
officially begin the boycott.
The clock is running.
