As Obama Talks Of Bipartisanship, Definitions Vary
http://tinyurl.com/aufqmt
After a week of legislative successes for President Obama, Republicans seized
on one asterisk: his inability to line up support from their ranks. As he heads
into his second full week in office, members of both parties are waiting to see
whether he will regard this as the failure that some have made it out to be --
and how much he is willing to alter his approach if he does. ...
"We got the sense that he was very genuine," said Rep. Zach Wamp (R-Tenn.). But
"if he comes and meets with us like that and it doesn't have an impact, it
begins to hurt his credibility." ...

GOP Losing Patience With Obama, Dem Leaders

Just because there really is a recession and the Bush Administration was made
up of a bunch of incompetent crooks doesn't mean this isn't a nation of

It's just that the whining about nothing has gotten all mixed up with the
whining about something.

Time To Play Hardball
http://tinyurl.com/d48n7t
The irony of President Obama's Blue Tuesday is that the wall-to-wall television
interviews he granted were designed not to apologize for Tom Daschle's fall
from grace but to fight back against the Republicans' success in tarnishing his
stimulus package.
Obama's network appearances were planned as a response to a wholly
unanticipated development: Republicans -- short on new ideas, low on votes and
deeply unpopular in the polls -- have been winning the media war over the
president's central initiative. ...
.. those critics have been relentless, often casting logic aside to reframe the
debate from a practical concern over how to rescue the economy to an
ideological dispute about government spending. ...

The Action Americans Need
http://tinyurl.com/dmqhj3
. . In recent days, there have been misguided criticisms of this plan that
echo the failed theories that helped lead us into this crisis -- the notion
that tax cuts alone will solve all our problems; that we can meet our enormous
tests with half-steps and piecemeal measures; that we can ignore fundamental
challenges such as energy independence and the high cost of health care and
still expect our economy and our country to thrive.
I reject these theories, and so did the American people when they went to the
polls in November and voted resoundingly for change. ...

. . You know, there's not a one of us who has anything that these people that
are without it now haven't contributed to what we've got. I don't suppose
there's the most unemployed or the hungriest man in America has contributed in
one way to the wealth of every millionaire in America. It wasn't the working
class that brought this condition on at all. It was the big boys themselves who
thought that this financial drunk we were going through was going to last
forever. They over-merged and over-capitalized, and over-everything else.
That's the fix we're in now. ...

The New Landonists
http://tinyurl.com/b5gmlp
.. if you listen to today's Republican revisionists, the Greatest Generation
voters who gave FDR towering majorities in all but two states were a bunch of
saps. Rather than wait for capitalism to right itself, they backed a president
who understood that when private capital stopped investing, public capital had
to take up the slack. For some inexplicable reason, they warmed to a president
who used public funds to bring electricity to rural America rather than wait
for private utilities to get around to it in a decade or two. Oddly, they
backed a president who put 4 million Americans on the payroll of the Works
Progress Administration (WPA) at a time when private payrolls were contracting,
and they actually found value in such federal "make-work" creations as post
offices, libraries and the Triborough Bridge. ...
Today, the arguments made for and against President Obama's stimulus plan
really aren't that different from the arguments that were made for and against
the New Deal some 75 years ago. Where the New Dealers brought electric power to
rural Americans, the Obama people want to bring them broadband access. Where
the New Deal built dams to generate power from rivers, the Obama people want to
build a power grid that can channel electricity generated by wind.
As for the Republicans, they remain locked in Landonism. While retail chains
topple like so many dominos as consumers cut back, the Republicans focus on
cutting corporate taxes, as though the problem confronting American businesses
was the tax on their profits rather than the fact that, in the absence of
sales, they have no profits. ...
