If the problem occurs in an hour or less, consistently, it is lots easier to
find with the process of elimination. Often I go for several hours without a
lockup.
Does the MB have a Northbridge chipset fan? (Or the video card?)
Those little fans have been a "known problem" for me, even if they "seem"
to be running at full speed.
What is the age (and model) of the MB?
Note that AFTER one of those fans starts making noise, (or any fan for that
matter),
it is generally a waste of time to oil it -- (a temporary "cure" at the best).
