Dunno about the last, but OCR and speech recognition software are hardly 
new.  Speech recognition was alive and well in the late 70s.  Not as good 
as now, but then they had to use external devices to do the floating 
point stuff because the computers weren't fast enough and had other 
technology-impediments to deal with.  Many of the [clever!] techniques 
they were working on (to do more with less, basically) have been 
abandoned since, because the modern hardware can 'brute force' that kind 
of thing in ways they couldn't dream of.

Similarly with OCR: when you can get incredibly better resolution and 
apply a humongeous amount of computer power, you can do better [but not 
really functionally any different] than the OCR systems of the 60s.
