Hi Bernie, Many thanks for the explanation of speech recognition and OCR not being new. In terms of screen readers, they were doing just fine during the Dos days. However, the graphical user interface came along and make things extremely complex. So perhaps yes, things have not changed too much. However, a lot of software has become significantly more affordable.

Dunno about the last, but OCR and speech recognition software are hardly new. Speech recognition was alive and well in the late 70s. Not as good as now, but then they had to use external devices to do the floating point stuff because the computers weren't fast enough and had other technology-impediments to deal with. Many of the [clever!] techniques they were working on (to do more with less, basically) have been abandoned since, because the modern hardware can 'brute force' that kind of thing in ways they couldn't dream of. Similarly with OCR: when you can get incredibly better resolution and apply a humongeous amount of computer power, you can do better [but not really functionally any different] than the OCR systems of the 60s. /Bernie\ -- Bernie Cosell Fantasy Farm Fibers mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Pearisburg, VA --> Too many people, too few sheep <-- -- ---------------------------------------- WIN-HOME Archives: http://PEACH.EASE.LSOFT.COM/archives/WIN-HOME.html Contact the List Owner about anything: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Official Win-Home List Members Profiles Page http://www.besteffort.com/winhome/Profiles.html -- ---------------------------------------- WIN-HOME Archives: http://PEACH.EASE.LSOFT.COM/archives/WIN-HOME.html Contact the List Owner about anything: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Official Win-Home List Members Profiles Page http://www.besteffort.com/winhome/Profiles.html
