Of course a commercial vendor will not allow a free project to use its
data due to conflict of interest. The commercial entity will want to
protect its "killer feature", to be able to survive against XCSoar.

Our answer should be: we build a new database, or we encourage people
to contribute to an existing free project (if there is one already).
The new free database should be free to use for non-commercial use.
One of the Creative Commons licenses should be suited for this.

XCSoar has many thousands of active users (~ 10,000 on Android alone).
We should have much more manpower than all commercial vendors
combined.

We should consider this a big chance, because streckenflug.at's
decision not to support us may be a very stupid decision for them: if
they would allow us to access to their database, we would depend on
their good will and licensing conditions forever. If we are forced to
build a free database now, we will be independent in the long run.

The XCSoar project has liberated the software market, the next logical
step is to liberate databases.

(Do photographers get paid by streckenflug.at when they assign their
copyright to the company? Are they aware that the company makes money
from their contributions?)
