Merle,
"Gassho" is Japanese for something like, "Hands held in front of the body in
prayer-pose" with your eyes looking gently at the tips of your middle fingers.
It's the hand-position Japanese people use when they bow to each other in
deepest respect and gratitude, and bow to the Buddha in each of us. Chinese
people, too (esp. in Taiwan; maybe not so much now in PRC where you have been).
"Gassho and bow" means hands in prayer pose, and bow at the waist.
