Publishing is also about interaction; humans being social animals need to share their thoughts, experiences etc. with each other.
Poetry can be immensely profitable, but that poetry is not necessarily high brow. I am talking about the greeting card market. Who do you think writes all those mushy/funny/ gyani/provocative rhymed and sometimes unrhymed verses? These people are the copywriters of the poetry world, they don't get by-lines but they get paid. Here is a birthday poem by me. I wrote it on the birth of a friend's baby boy, got a print out, pasted it on a card and gave it to her. I didn't earn money, just my friend's appreciation, which meant a lot to me. :-)Rumjhum ON THE COMING OF A BABY In a vast celestial kitchen Beyond our grasp and far away The Maker pondered over his staff While in his hand lay, a bit of clay Stardust of dreams, the bluebird's song A cherub's sweet dimpled laugh A pinch of mischief, wisdom's nectar And more, He stirred in with his staff Then gently He set the mould With infinite care He poured And softly blew in the breath Of life. Meanwhile love's fire roaredÂ… Down below in a mother's heart A father's and a sister's too The Maker he saw it all and smiled For they were your own, He knew! Yes you __(baby's name)________, you!! Made in the image Of that butter thieving bundle of joy! Marvelous indeed are the ways of The Maker who Brought forth from the weft of a dream, you dear boy! > Publishing, as a concept, is not just about eliminating anonymity from ur creativity but has a substantial commercial content too. And i daresay poetry as a commercial venture is not the best of profit making industry. Devoid of profit - publishing loses its meaning. Therefore, poetry is essentially a non-commercial creative venture - a bit like theatre or documentary film making - or perhaps like free porn sites all of us search for (just joking!). > > All poets end up writing at least one birthday poem. Are any of us sharing it here in this group. Again the best of birthday poems has been penned by Dylan Thomas and it was Temp's poem and reference to the October weather which reminded me of this great oeuvre as it had a bit of that tone. Our AB Vajpayee is another for Birthday poems. > > Ron > > > --------------------------------- > Enjoy this Diwali with Y! India Click here > ------------------------ Yahoo!
