Right. Maybe I wasn't too clear initially as to what I was trying
to do. My thought (or hope) had been that I'd be able to boot off of
one piece of media (floppy or CD), automatically partition and format
the drive, and then restore the entire system, modifications and all,
directly from the last regularly-scheduled tape backup to that drive
(after all, the tape backup script backs up everything). Basically,
if mondo worked (minor issue, that), it'd be exactly what I was
thinking of.

The reinstall floppy with the modified ks.cfg (to restore /, not to
run tape-restore) sounds like it should the trick. In a sense, it
seems a bit redundant--you're installing the system fresh, then
immediately proceeding to overwrite it from the backup--but it
certainly seems like the simplest option from the user's perspective
(assuming it works as it seems like it should--once I get a working
tape drive again, I'll be testing away).

However, let's carry it a step further. If we are restoring the
entire root filesystem, then there's no need for a customized
reinstallation disk, and there's no need to make specific config db
entries (they'd all be restored from tape). In that case, it seems
that it'd be trivially easy to include a restore as an option on the
CD itself.

Also, unless I'm pretty far off base, it shouldn't take much
tinkering to be able to restore a non-RAID system to a RAID one, or
vice versa. Seems like this could be a useful feature.
