Well, after 1.5 days, no problems with the "one external 1600x1200 monitor" configuration.
So I conclude, with a reasonably high degree of confidence, that "dual monitors" is a necessary part of the problem environment. I'll return to that, and test more throughly with SwingSet instead of the IB app to see if I can get it to fail with that. And I'll see what I can do to run it on another graphics card and/or OS. Is there an app I can use that will display the gory details of the JRE running under a web app?
