Sure. This is why I think using a 3840x2160 makes not big sense (for

4 "virtual screens" on the same physical screen...

[e-users] 4K display

2021-06-22 Thread Pierre Couderc via enlightenment-users

I am considering buying a 3840x2180 display.

I do not imagine it to be a problem for e, but I ask anyway...

A good think would be to divide it in 4 "normal" screens, something like
4 virtual screens on 1 physical screen... Is there some way to do  that ?

Thanks

no reason it'd be a problem.

no. :) as the screen appears as one screen with one connector and one edid ...
it's seen as one screen for e.

But, font size are OK.

Can I enlarge the widgets with any settings?

1. git efl/e or last releases (1.25 / 0.24)?
2. did you change font sizes instead of just changing the scaling in scale
settings?
3. you can change sizes of many things - shelf sizes, scale factor. font sizes,
base dpi for xsettings scaling etc. ... :)

For me, I am not interested with more dpi, but for more square inches...

yes - efl apps will "just work" in the fb. build with the drm engine. they can
also with with acceleration too if you have a working gl stack there. of course
you are limited to a single window. there are catches... :)

yes - it won't detect this because you could be cross-compiling on archA for

well you did ask about per-screen backlight controls. that is how you get them.
otherwise standard brightness and dimmed brightness are global as 99%of usage
is on a single screen laptop and even with multiple screens you probably want
them all to automatically dim when idle to the same level and start up to the
same level.

Thank you. I did not think that standard  brightness was identical on

Incidently, maybe this "Normal backlight" setting should been available

If you put a backlight gadget on a shelf on each screen, then each screen is
controllable separately with that gadget (if you have ddcutil installed for
external monitor controls via DDC). Be aware - it seems at least newer ADM
system have issues with this and lead to a kernel hang in the i2c driver that
will lock up a cpu core in endless retries of some sort.

e saves this out pretty much soon after you move tyhe gadget around (the gadcon
will queue a save and a few seconds later this will get saved out). it goes
into the normal e.cfg file - you can have a look in it. e.g.

vieet ~/.e/e/config/standard/e.cfg config

then look for

 group "E_Config_Gadcon" struct {
 group "clients" list {
 group "E_Config_Gadcon_Client" struct {
 value "name" string: "clock";
 value "id" string: "clock.8";
 value "geom.pos" int: 1298;
 value "geom.size" int: 0;
 value "geom.res" int: 0;
 value "geom.pos_x" double: 0.12382812472244424;
 value "geom.pos_y" double: 0.86319444863862032;
 value "geom.size_w" double: 0.06992187444488849;
 value "geom.size_h" double: 0.0694475283973;
 value "state_info.seq" int: 0;
 value "state_info.flags" int: 0;
 value "style" string: "plain";
 value "orient" int: 0;
 value "autoscroll" uchar: 0;
 value "resizable" uchar: 0;
 }
 }
 value "name" string: "gadman";
 value "id" int: 114;
 value "zone" uint: 0;
 }

that would be the desktop gadgets for zone 0 (screen 0 - whatever screen is
assigned to zone 0 depending on screen priority). that above is an example of a
clock gadget with a location and size. it certainly writes out the config
perfectly for me all the time (and has done so now for almost decades...)
unless you have a full filesytem or permission problems (and you should start
getting dialogs form e saying it has trouble writing out config then).

After many checks, whenever I move a gadget (pager in this case), then
exit e, I get various positions and sometimes I get :

   group "E_Config_Gadcon_Client" struct {
   value "name" string: "pager";
   value "id" string: "pager.3";
   value "geom.pos" int: 954;
   value "geom.size" int: 0;
   value "geom.res" int: 0;
   value "geom.pos_x" double: 0.0;
   value "geom.pos_y" double: 0.0;
   value "geom.size_w" double: 0.0145835646298;
   value "geom.size_h" double: 0.0037037037037037038450515;
   value "state_info.seq" int: 0;
   value "state_info.flags" int: 0;
   value "style" string: "inset";
   value "orient" int: 0;
   value "autoscroll" uchar: 0;
   value "resizable" uchar: 0;
   }

In most cases, at restart of e, the gadget is not in the last position
before exit enligthenment. The problem occurs on mainly on pager.

In "most" cases, it is repetitive, and I am ready to make tests if it helps.

I use e 0.25.3 from debian team with 2 X screens.

not in settings ... the default theme happens to define these icons to be at

Is there a topic to introduce efl under C++.

I have  a problem with "hello world" in Unified C API

If I compile
https://www.enlightenment.org/develop/tutorials/c/hello-world-gui.md
with C++ (linux), all is fine.

Il I had a thread, it fails with nothing displayed  :

void start()
{

      while(1)
      {
      sleep(1);
      }
      return;
}
//**  main
***
EAPI_MAIN void
efl_main(void *data EINA_UNUSED, const Efl_Event *ev EINA_UNUSED)
{
      _gui_setup();
      thread wait(start);

^^^ this here blocks. the main loop can't run and proc ess events

OK, I understand that.

So cpp is not compatible /a priori/ with efl.

This is the first sense of my post. Is there some topic introducing what
can be used or not used ?

All this because I wanted to try the EFL Unified C API...

But the good old loop works (or seems to wor= !)  fine :

elm_main(int argc, char **argv)
{
    _gui_setup();
    thread wait(start);
    elm_run();
    wait.join();
    return 0;
}

[e-users] Problem with backlight settings with 2 screens

2022-06-29 Thread Pierre Couderc via enlightenment-users

in e 0.25.3 (installed from debian)

When I start e, many times but not always, on the "second" screen,
backlight is very low, I have to go in "Backlight Settings", change
something then backlight turns back normal, the "something" could be
changing Dim Backlight form 84 to 83, then  applying..

It seems to me that the saving of the previous state is not correctly
reloaded. I have some other bugs of this kind. Particularly, if I try to
exit e, I have a crash (see crashdump.txt below). And it seems to me
that these bugs are  linked to the presence of 2 screens, the crash does
not occurs with 1 screen.

This can be a DDC backlight thing. Sometimes monitors when they are in the
middle of changing modes don't respond to DDC backlight change messages. The
backlight code does have some retry logic but it eventually gives up. If you
don't use the DDC stuff this wouldn't happen. It's kind of iffy and your
mileage varies based on who makes your monitor.

OK, I disabble ddc ans I see what occurs...

[e-users] Brave browser instances lost in an ibar !

2022-06-06 Thread Pierre Couderc via enlightenment-users

instances of terminology, and I can click on the one I want to switch to.

But when I hoover over a brave  icon, the list of all instances does not
appear, so I find no way to open one of them... Some exist and it is
confirmed too as the border of the brave icon is blue, but I cannot
access them...

it can find it then - as i said. whatever you have is a "poor install" that

this means the brave browser desktop file found is not the one that was
added... you have 2 of them that are different.

Yes, I find 2 identical files : brave-browser.desktop and browser.desktop

(not reminding having created 2 files, but )

When I remove brave-browser.desktop, all becomes normal  and the problem
is solved !

So thank you very much.

Do you think that the "missing line" :

StartupWMClass=brave-browser

is a bug I should report to brave developpers...?

resolution will have nothing to do with that at all. it's entirely
dependent on the xserver and xrandr/driver support - all e does is provide

You nearly got it, it is a scrollbar but not of the ibars, but of the

the TV folder when I scroll it :

I didn't say ibar. desktop icons. icons on your desktop. not in the shelf.
filemanager icons. files. move the directory icon further up so its not out of
the view area and thus needs scrolling. the filemanager area will be limited by
where shelves are - as you can see the scrollbar stops above the bottom shelf
and previous screenshot it stops at the edge of the shelf. :)

Thank you.

1- Maybe, I could help e by including some parameter in the
brave.desktop...?

In fact, I find 2 desktop files :

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 8.2K May 24 17:56
/snap/brave/162/meta/gui/brave.desktop
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 8.5K Jun  9 06:57
/var/lib/snapd/desktop/applications/brave_brave.desktop

Maybe e does not find the good brave.desktop file ?

2- I note that the list of windows ("main menu", "windows") includes the
brave windows with the correct icon and the correct window titles. Why
windows display finds a correct list and not ibar ? Is this not a bug...?

there is no way for e to match the .desktop file to the browser windows -
the wmclass is not listed in desktop file that the windows use. the
command/executable doesn't match the wm command property set on the window
etc. etc. - otherwise it's match it up. there is netwm_pid and the netwm
startup id properties but these are lost on the e side if you restart e (as
it tracks these in memory with an instance structure per process it e runs
until that process exits).

ok, sorry, I do not understand your answer very well,  but why brave
windows do not appear in the ibar? I have found that they appears in the
list of the windows of the screen...

because ibar has to match the window with a .desktop file in ibar - if it can't
match this to a matching desktop file by properties on the window and in the
desktop file, it cant put it there. it works for chromium so i can only assume
brave puts different properties on its windows or in the desktop files so it
cant be matched.

I thank you very much for your detailed explanation.

I fully agree with you about snap : I hate it.

Continuing trying to use snap for brave does not think a good solution.

But I like brave, and lxd (which is magic and critical for me) and they
are not available under debian...

Moreover, I have renounced to ubuntu, when after an update the full
telephone system (asterisk) of the company failed, gladly a saturday...
So, I now I put each critical system (asterisk, mail...) in lxd
containers,with quick restore solution in case of catastroph.

But I am obliged to use well stable packaging system such as debian...

lxd was available only under snap, it is changing now as it is becoming
available (again) under debian now...

And brave is not as critical for me as lxd. I shall find some solution
without snap...

Thank you again...

Mmm, are you sure ? why  not  split the space, as when you "split V" ?

At least it could be a user choice..

generally i think the idea was that you bring up miniview to get some context
then hide it again when done.

OK, I see. As I have 4K display, I have many terminology windows with
enough space for permanent miniviews

this is normal in x - copy & paste is a transaction between 2 clients. "copy"
or "cut" simply has the source app own the selection - it says it owns it. when
you paste the target app you paste in then requests the data from the source
app (they negotiate a common format) then the data is transferred. if the
original app is gone - this transaction cannot take place as the selection
owner is gone and no negotiation and transfer can happen.n this has been x11
selections (and wayland too) ever since day 0.

you could try a clipboard manager that basically pasts to itself whenever it
sees a new selection owner and then stores this... and it becomes the
selection owner...

Thank you very much for the explanation.

So I have tried diodon, but it does not work. Do someone use a clipboard
manager and can someone suggest me one...?

As a more general problem, is there a  page giving a list of recommended
program tested to be well working with e?

 I see the problem on another thread, a user wants to install e, but
she needs too xorg. Sure it is normal. And she needs too to start dbus,
it is dbus-x11 in debian... It is not  simple nor basic to know that all
this is necessary...

you could add a
StatrupWMClass as i mentioned to make it easier to match to brave-browser.
you can change the name of the brave desktop file. brave-browser.desktop -
this means e's fallbacks to using class name (brave-browser) as the
desktop file name will work (this is intentional in standards). but it
seems to me that brave somehow is making it hard to match a window to its
desktop file. at least for you and your packages. the aur arch packages
is just fine.

Strange and interesting , I add :

StartupWMClass=brave-browser

to brave-browser.desktop

And it is better, the result depends on "Don't show active windows"
parameter of the ibar:

it can find it then - as i said. whatever you have is a "poor install" that
makes it pretty impossible to match up the desktop to the window unless the
pid matches and i have a suspicion the pid does not match.

If it is checked : nothing changes, the brave icon appears but instances
are not shown.

If I uncheck it, a second brave icon appears, and I can hower on it...

this means the brave browser desktop file found is not the one that was
added... you have 2 of them that are different.

Yes, I find 2 identical files : brave-browser.desktop and browser.desktop

(not reminding having created 2 files, but )

When I remove brave-browser.desktop, all becomes normal  and the problem
is solved !

So thank you very much.

Do you think that the "missing line" :

StartupWMClass=brave-browser

is a bug I should report to brave developpers...?

it's not a bug - but it helps. since one was browser.desktop then the base name
"browser" isn't a sensible thing to match. you probably launched the
browser.desktop copy and then e found the window matched brave-browser.desktop
through wm class - as someone decided you ca just go renaming a desktop to
browser.desktop without consequences - this had problems. so partly it's your
fault for using one of the 2 desktops (the wrong one) then expecting everything
to work right as well as someone providing the "wrong name" AND not providing a
StartupWMClass field to be explicit in which windows this desktop file would
match. the app itself (brave) is also not very helpful. the ONLY thing it
provides that might be of use is the wm class property. the netwm pid is
partly useful- unless you go wrapping things in scripts etc. which i
suspect is happening and these scripts don't use exec at the end. better apps
provide much more like _NET_STARTUP_ID which is far more accurate than any pid
property as this allows a window to be tracked back to a specific launch of
something. also providing WM_COMMAND would be helpful as then you have a
command-line to try look up a binary with that's in a .desktop file. this isn't
provided either. overall brave (and chromium) are not very helpful and provide
so little information that if something like your situation happens with
multiple desktop files of different names (one of which is poorly named
browser.desktop) and not other stuff like StartupWMClass in the desktop .. then
finding some way for a wm to go "this window is see here belongs to this
desktop file i see over there" becomes hard or impossible.

I am sorry I am not enough proficient to fully understand  your explanation.

Anyway, currently, I have only one
/usr/share/applications/brave-browser.desktop, since months and every
time there is an update of the browser, I have to add a line :

StartupWMClass=brave-browser

in it.

I can live with it...

Ctrl-Alt-End should reset the desktop without affecting the apps and
normally restores the cursor.

Wow: you save me...
The problem I run into is that the cursor simply disappears. I think
this likely involves running a dual-monitor system.

In my case, dual monitor system too, I see the cursor locked on the up

no - e can't do it. because while the compositor can scale windows... e cant
scale input coordinates like the mouse as input events go direct from xserver

you'll need to use scaling inside qemu itself or some other mechanism (spice

Yes, spice is a good solution.

you could user bluetoothctl and on the cmdline try connect. also d-feet and use
