Which version are you using? Could you send the full stack?

By declaring the way you did, no exception should be displayed.

These are the constructors:

OK, so you have created a PDF using iText that uses some advanced

the question is, do you know if and when iText will be able to

Your preposition contradicts your question.
You say: iText supports feature X which isn't supported by PDFill.
you ask: when will iText support feature X?

[iText-questions] Question: Sign pdf with *.p12 certificate

2013-07-03 Thread Gruber, Florian
Hello,

I downloaded the 30 days test license of iText for Android and want to test it
with a prototype for digital signing pdfs with a *.p12 certificate.

Then I installed the *.p12 certificate correctly in the Android Keychain, but
when I want to sign a pdf I get a Nullpointer Exception from the Spongy Castle
API (enclosed the source code and the exception).

Exist any example code for Android because I didn´t find any?

Hi  itext  support,

At this moment, I'm looking for a library that allows me adding annotations to

the library Itext can.

Doing so would be willing to purchase a license.

PDFs aren't designed to be opened in Notepad as they are binary documents
usually compressed, so all you'll see is a lot of random garbage.

Once you have an Acrofield, you can follow it back to its parent page.

What do you mean by retrieve the PdfLayers?
Do you want to know which layers are available (including info about the
properties)? That's doable.
Or do you want to retrieve the content that belongs to those layers?
That's... a strange request. In which form do you want that content?

Well, the best way to split a PDF is by using PdfStamper.
There's an example in chapter 6 (available for free).

Mhm I didn't read java in Hemants post - did you?
You may have forgotten ;-) but there is/was a iText C# version 4.1.6 -
the latest licensed  under MPL/LPGL.

@Hemant
What do you think?
If you have the budget and the time/resources to adapt your project
and test the new version then go with the new commercial version.
Or you experience bugs or want to facilitate cool new features etc. go
with the new version.
And in the other cases go with 'never change a running system'.

[iText-questions] QUESTION: In xmlworker, how do I display html tags ..

2012-06-03 Thread Parminder Kaur
If I have the following html code for instance:

tabletrtdThe HTML image (quot;lt;imggt;quot;) tag/tdtr/table

and I try to convert this into PDF using xmlworker, I get the following
error:

com.itextpdf.tool.xml.exceptions.RuntimeWorkerException: Invalid nested tag
td found, expected closing tag img.

I tried the following text: img, quot;lt;imggt;quot;,
quot;#60;img#62;quot; with spaces and without spaces. But they are all
converted to the same img by the time they reach the processing code and
I get an error.

How can I resolve this? I tried this on the XMLworker demo website. It
didn't throw any error, but it didn't display the tag either.

This has probably been solved in more recent versions. You're getting
gibberish because the version you're using (dating from October 2007)
didn't take into account the character mapping used in the file you're
parsing.

Surely you'll understand that we're not going to maintain a separate

Nothing keeps you from using iText 2.0.6 (with packages com.lowagie)
next to iText 5.x.y (with packages com.itextpdf).
As the package names are different, there shouldn't be any clashes

Hi

First, I should thankful you because of your helps and guides to me.

I have studied 'PDF reference 1.7' completely and I was faced with several

1. Where place does 'Metadata' stored? In main file(main content) or
another file?

2. What does information stored in 'metadata stream'?

3. If the table is split across multiple pages, How to specifies page
area inner table? In the other word, what symbol insert inner table?

4. Does PDF support HTML and CSS?

5. Does TOC stored in main content or another file?

Please help me to answer this question.

Thank you for your attention

1. Where place does 'Metadata' stored? In main file(main
content) or another file?

If you have read the PDF reference 1.7 completely, then you know that
Metadata can be stored:

1. in an info dictionary
2. in an XMP stream that covers the complete document
3. in XMP streams that cover specific parts (e.g. a specific page)
As you have read in the reference, all of this metadata is stored in the
file.

2. What does information stored in 'metadata stream'?

You have read this in the PDF reference, so I'll skip this question.

3. If the table is split across multiple pages, How to specifies
page area inner table? In the other word, what symbol insert inner table?

You can nest tables by adding a table instance to another table using
the addCell() method.

4. Does PDF support HTML and CSS?

iText supports converting HTML/CSS to PDF, but the PDF specification
itself doesn't support HTML/CSS (unless you're referring to Rich Text).

5. Does TOC stored in main content or another file?

Define TOC.
Do you mean bookmarks? These are called outlines in the PDF reference.
So when you read the part about the outline tree in the PDF reference,
you were reading about bookmarks.
Do you mean specific pages with a table of contents (and maybe some
links to the content), then these are no different from other pages,
except that they have Link annotations with local goto actions.

A PDF is a single file. The only case in which you may need external
resources is when you use fonts that aren't embedded.

Thank you for testing our knowledge about the PDF specification. What
was the purpose of this pop quiz if you have already studied the PDF
reference completely yourself?

you'll find out that you're doing at least two things wrong:
1. you use onStartPage() to add content; you shouldn't do this: use
onEndPage();
2. you add content to the Document object in a page event; the
documentation tells you why you should use that object for READ-ONLY
purposes.

In short: you can solve your problem by reading chapter 5.

Re: [iText-questions] Question on hiding toolbar(disable save and print button) in Adobe X using iText

2011-12-18 Thread Leonard Rosenthol
Actually, in older versions of Acrobat/Reader the toolbar was just hidden. If
the user chose the appropriate menu item or hit the hot key, the toolbar
would appear and they could happily click the Save button. In addition, they
could have right-clicked and chosen Save as well.

Your previous solution has always been useless.

What you need to do is NOT prevent saving BUT control the actual use of the
PDF. Doesn't matter if someone has it, if they can't open it – now does it.

And that's where DRM (Digital Rights Management) comes in.

Leonard

Hello

We badly need a solution. We cannot want to introduce a new logic to handle pdf
and confuse the users.
Right now in all versions of pdf the itext has an option to disable the tool
bar option, which will allow the users not to save the sensitive information to

and makes the iText code not to work.

Can somebody help me out and give a feasible solution?

Re: [iText-questions] Question on hiding toolbar(disable save and print button) in Adobe X using iText

2011-12-17 Thread Dániel Kékesi
Brijoy,

For the save button I have no idea, but the print button can be disabled
with a trick.
In Acrobat one can create objects that are 'not visible but printable' (I'm
sure iText can manipulate these properties as well). What we did to avoid
users using the print button in the toolbar was to create a rectangle with the
above mentioned properties and sized this rectangle to encompass the whole
page/pages. This rectangle also contained a text like Printing this documnet
is not allowed.
When the user pressed the print button nothing on the printed page was visible
but this warning message. The nice thing is that you can control when and how
this 'print guard' kicks in by setting its printable property to true or false
(we used this with acroforms to force users using our custom print button that
also validated field contents before printing).

Best regards,

Dear Support,

We are interested in PDF and barcodes creation using iText. However we need to
make sure if barcode API supports type 93. There’s nothing about this standard

Thank you in advance for clarifying this.

Barcode 39 is supported in iText, and barcode 93 is an enhancement of
that type of barcode. AFAIK, barcode 93 isn't supported yet, but you
could sponsor the development of that functionality the same way other
companies sponsored the development of other types of barcodes.

Re: [iText-questions] question about extracting text with itext

2011-11-11 Thread david guede
Hi guys and thanks.

I was thinking that maybe we could extract only a section of a page...

So, if one bookmark represents the start of the section I want to extract,
I can get the start point of the extraction. Then, maybe the next bookmark
 can be the end of the area I want to extract... Would not that be easily
feasible ? And then I only need to extract from my start point to the end
point

If one of you has got a code, please, that would be very helpful!

cheers

David
2011/11/10 Leonard Rosenthol lrose...@adobe.com

  1) Bookmarks in a PDF do NOT HAVE TO be associated with content – they
 can refer to any Action as well.

 2) Bookmarks that do point to content, normally only point to the START of
 the content – there is no END.

 3) UNLESS the PDF is tagged and structured properly, and the bookmarks are
 connected to that structure. IN THAT ONE CASE, then you have the actual
 content per bookmark.

 Unfortunately, the number of PDFs that meet all three criteria is almost 0
 :(.

 Subject: [iText-questions] question about extracting text with itext

 Hi everybody,

 I have never used iText and need to manipulate contents from pdf files.
 Basically, I have got one pdf file called sample.pdf
 In this file, I have got some bookmarks (corresponding to the sections of
 my file). This can be an example :

 Sample.pdf

 SAMPLE
1 Introduction
   1.1 IntroductionPart1
  blablablablablablablabla
   1.2 IntroductionPart2
 blibliblibliblibliblibliblibliblibliblibi
 2 Section1
   2.1 Section1Part1
 blublublublublublublublbu
   2.2 Section1Part2
 blobloblobloblo

 Of course this a very simplified example of the pdf file I need to work
 with...

 My question is very simple, is there any way to extract the text for each
 bookmark to .txt file ? For example, with my example, I would like to
 create 6 .txt file:

 Introduction.txt
  1.1 IntroductionPart1
  blablablablablablablabla
   1.2 IntroductionPart2
 blibliblibliblibliblibliblibliblibliblibi

 IntroductionPart1.txt
   blablablablablablablabla

  IntroductionPart2.txt
   blibliblibliblibliblibliblibliblibliblibi

 Section1.txt
   2.1 Section1Part1
 blublublublublublublublbu
   2.2 Section1Part2
 blobloblobloblo

 Section1Part1.txt
 blublublublublublublublbu

  Section1Part2.txt
 blobloblobloblo

 If so, could you please send me an example or tell me where I could find
 one...

 Thanks in adavnce

 David

Re: [iText-questions] question about extracting text with itext

2011-11-11 Thread Leonard Rosenthol
David – I think you need to do a bit of reading on the PDF format…

When I said start, I didn't mean that it pointed to the first
word/paragraph/header – I meant that it pointed to a page. It might even point
to a physical location on the page, but for most PDF files, it won't actually
connect to the content. It is POSSIBLE to have it connect to content, but
unfortunately most PDFs do not :(.

As far as using the next bookmark for the end - in addition to the above
problems, you'd be ASSUMING a very specific setup for the bookmarks. And most
documents probably use a different structure.

Hi guys and thanks.

I was thinking that maybe we could extract only a section of a page...

So, if one bookmark represents the start of the section I want to extract, I
can get the start point of the extraction. Then, maybe the next bookmark
 can be the end of the area I want to extract... Would not that be easily
feasible ? And then I only need to extract from my start point to the end point

If one of you has got a code, please, that would be very helpful!

Hi Leaonard,

I am not sure I am getting your answer...

OK, I understand that the bookmark is probably not connected to the
content... no problem with this. But, the bookmark is somewhere on the page
and therefore I cn probably get the coordinate of the first letter of the
first word for each bookmark (like an X/Y coordinate in the page), right ?

Or evan if it is not possible to get the coordinate of a bookmark, I can
probably get the title of it and then look for the coordinate of the title

I know that some other lib permit to extract rectangles maybe iText too..
If so, I can therefore set an area (a rectangle) to extract text between 2
coordinates I got... Is that totally wrong ?

That assumption is wrong in many, many cases.

  Or evan if it is not possible to get the coordinate of a bookmark, I
 can probably get the title of it

Please define bookmark.

iText is able to export bookmarks (aka the Outline tree) to an XML file.
For instance, if you have this PDF:
http://examples.itextpdf.com/results/part2/chapter07/outline_tree.pdf
The resulting XML file can look like this:
http://examples.itextpdf.com/results/part2/chapter07/outline_tree.xml

As Leonard has been trying to explain (but you're not really listening),
not all bookmarks refer to a coordinate.

This is a case where iText gives you the coordinate AND the title:
Title Action=GoTo Style=bold Page=1 FitH 8062001: A Space
Odyssey/Title
On page 1 at the vertical position 806, there's a bookmark with title
2001: A Space Odyssey

But these are bookmarks that don't refer to a coordinate on the page:
Title Action=URI Color=0 0 1
URI=http://imdb.com/title/tt0423866/;link to IMDB/Title
Title Action=JS Code=app.alert('Movie produced in 1968; run length:
141');instant info/Title
The bookmark with title link to IMDB is actually a link to a web site.
The bookmark with title instant info is a snippet of JavaScript code.

 and then look for the coordinate of the title in the page and finally
 get the X/Y coordinates... Am I clear ?

I fear we're talking about totally different things.

 I know that some other lib permit to extract rectangles maybe iText too.

Yes, iText can do that too, but:
(1) why would you do that if the bookmark already has a title?
(2) what are you going to do if there is no coordinate?

 If so, I can therefore set an area (a rectangle) to extract text
 between 2 coordinates I got... Is that totally wrong ?

It's always a good idea to read some documentation before asking
questions. If you ask half a question, you'll only get half an answer.
That may be frustrating for you, but it's even more frustrating for
those who answer. Once you've read the documentation, you'll be able to
ask accurate questions that can be answered in a more accurate way.

[iText-questions] Question about Rtf files

2011-09-29 Thread Bernhard S.
Hello there,

i know that the rtf is not supported anymore but i hope you could help me
with a (i hope) easy problem (espacially for you ;) ).

I want to convert a RTF File into a PDF File in a very easy Java program.

My program should be used as a jar (or runable jar) just to take the
rtf-File and create a pdf-File after that delete the rtf and a Enterprise
Application Server will take this file and send it to the destinations.

Problem is i'll got the same NullPointerException:

I hope you would help me.

Thanks,
Best Regards
Bernhard

Hello Horst,

I didn't see any new info in your answer to Zachary's question.

Zachary (aka Me, Myself and I) makes two assumptions that are wrong:
- itext 2.1.7 was non-payment: that is not true. In the past companies
have bought a commercial license because they wanted to be released from
the requirements of the F/OSS license.
- he expects to get help about RTF parser. RTF parsing functionality
was never finished and was abandoned by its developer (who wasn't
afiliated with any of the iText companies at all). Currently, I don't
know anybody who is willing to offer RTF support for any iText library.

Zachary used to be blacklisted because of misbehavior on the mailing
list in 2010. He apologized and his account was restored. Unfortunately,
he still confuses free software with gratis software, spreading
misconceptions about the nature of open source as a business model.

We think that, in spite of the fact that he has contacted sales more
than once, he's not interested in doing business with us at all.

My version of Google tells me that there are plenty of RTF to XML parsers
available, some of them with a commercial-compatible F/OSS licence, some
even written in Java. I suggest that Zachary investigates that path first,
and once he has parsed his RTF into XML, he can use iText to create a PDF.

I don't see a problem with using two different libraries to solve two
different problems.

[iText-questions] question on PdfPTable inside a numbered list item

Hi,

On PdfPTable you can call add(), in add you can put a PdfPCell and a
PdfPCell can contain a PdfPTable.

maybe you could also directly do pdfPtable.add(otherPdfPTable)

[iText-questions] Question about PdfGraphics2D for saving pdf file

2011-04-03 Thread momomo_o

 Hello,

Thank you for reminding me of using PdfGraphics2D to solve my save pdf file
problme. Actually I am new to iText and I search some info of PdfGraphics2D.
Here are my solutions:

 public void setTexttoPdf(String filePath,JTextPane ta) throws IOException,
DocumentException{
 Document pdfDoc = new Document();
 FileOutputStream pdfFile = new FileOutputStream(new File(filePath));

 PdfWriter writer=PdfWriter.getInstance(pdfDoc, pdfFile);
 writer.setStrictImageSequence(true);
 pdfDoc.open();

 PdfContentByte cb = writer.getDirectContent();
 cb.saveState();
 DefaultFontMapper mapper = new DefaultFontMapper();
 PdfGraphics2D g2 = (PdfGraphics2D)cb.createGraphics(612, 792, mapper);

  ta.paint(g2);
  ta.print(g2);
  cb.restoreState();
  pdfDoc.close();
}

Then I insert a picture(jpg) in my Jtextpane and tried to save it as a pdf
file, but what I got is an empty pdf file. What's wrong with my code???

Thanks a lot for your favor~!

Re: [iText-questions] Question about PdfGraphics2D for saving pdf file

2011-04-03 Thread Bill Ensley

You missed 1T3XT BVBA's earlier post.

 Check out the paintToPdf method in this old example from the first book:

https://itext.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/itext/examples/src/in_action/chapter12/JTextPaneToPdf.java

 If ta is a JTextPane, g2 a PdfGraphics2D object and alloc a
Rectangle, you can do:

 ta.getUI().getRootView(ta).paint(g2, alloc);

not

ta.paint(g2) or ta.print(g2)

Neither of those will work.

FYI, I am the author of that original example.

You can definitely to what you want to do here, you just have to follow
the rules.

[iText-questions] Question about page number footers

2011-03-23 Thread dwhite
Hi, I am just trying to add current page number to the footer of my document.
I followed the example from iText in Action and it works except for one
small issue. For some reason the page number gets broken up. I have pasted
the following code I use to write the footer but it produces the following
result for a 3 page document.

Confidential Page 0 03/23/11 07:36:221
Confidential Page 0 03/23/11 07:36:222
Confidential Page 0 03/23/11 07:36:223

The page numbers are being split after the 0 on either side of the dates.
Is there something I'm not doing correctly?

Also, I tried using the example in the book

class IHeaderFooter extends PdfPageEventHelper {
Phrase[] header = new Phrase[2];
int pagenumber;

with the same result.

== my code ==
public void onOpenDocument(PdfWriter writer, Document document) {
PDFHeaderFooter PDFUtil = new PDFHeaderFooter();
String HeaderImageFile =
GeneralUtils.getConfigPropValue(report_header);
document.setHeader(PDFUtil.GetHeader(HeaderImageFile));
DateFormat dateFormat = new SimpleDateFormat(MM/dd/yy);
DateFormat timeFormat = new SimpleDateFormat(HH:mm:ss);
Date date = new Date();
String CurrentDate = dateFormat.format(date);
String CurrentTime = timeFormat.format(date);

HeaderFooter footer = null;
String pgNum = Integer.toString(writer.getPageNumber());
String footerPhrase = Confidential Page  + pgNum  +   +
CurrentDate +
  + CurrentTime;
Phrase fp = new Phrase(footerPhrase);
footer = new HeaderFooter(fp, true);
footer.setBorder(Rectangle.NO_BORDER);
footer.setAlignment(Element.ALIGN_CENTER);
document.setFooter(footer);
}

As explained in the book, the document object is an instance of PdfDocument.
You're using:

   document.setFooter(footer);

I don't know any example in the book uses PdfDocument.setFooter().
As a matter of fact, the method setFooter() no longer exists in
Document, nor in PdfDocument:

http://api.itextpdf.com/com/itextpdf/text/Document.html
http://api.itextpdf.com/com/itextpdf/text/pdf/PdfDocument.html

You're doing something that isn't supported at all.
(And that can't be found anywhere in the book.)

Replace document.setFooter with a showTextAligned method (either using
PdfContentByte or ColumnText), or wrap the Phrase in a ColumnText and
use the go() method (allthough in your case showTextAligned() is
probably better).

Replace document.setFooter with a showTextAligned method (either using
PdfContentByte or ColumnText), or wrap the Phrase in a ColumnText and
use the go() method (allthough in your case showTextAligned() is
probably better).

Re: [iText-questions] Question about page number footers

2011-03-23 Thread Klas Lindbäck
I assume you want the same date and time on all pages. So you should
generate the date/time string only once and then
use it on each page.

I assume you want different page numbers on each page. So you should
generate the page number once for each page.

It loooks like you are applying the page number twice. Once with the
value when the document is opened (0, between
Page and the date) and then again once for each page (the 1, 2, 3
appended at the end of each time stamp).

You should consult the examples posted on the web.
PHL (phle...@free.fr) posted the ones he used, they are probably nice ones.

 Also, I tried using the example in the book

 class IHeaderFooter extends PdfPageEventHelper {
   Phrase[] header = new Phrase[2];
   int pagenumber;

 with the same result.

 == my code ==
   public void onOpenDocument(PdfWriter writer, Document document) {
   PDFHeaderFooter PDFUtil = new PDFHeaderFooter();
   String HeaderImageFile =
 GeneralUtils.getConfigPropValue(report_header);
   document.setHeader(PDFUtil.GetHeader(HeaderImageFile));
   DateFormat dateFormat = new SimpleDateFormat(MM/dd/yy);
   DateFormat timeFormat = new SimpleDateFormat(HH:mm:ss);
  Date date = new Date();
  String CurrentDate = dateFormat.format(date);
  String CurrentTime = timeFormat.format(date);

   HeaderFooter footer = null;
   String pgNum = Integer.toString(writer.getPageNumber());
   String footerPhrase = Confidential Page  + pgNum  +   +
 CurrentDate +
   + CurrentTime;
   Phrase fp = new Phrase(footerPhrase);
   footer = new HeaderFooter(fp, true);
   footer.setBorder(Rectangle.NO_BORDER);
   footer.setAlignment(Element.ALIGN_CENTER);
   document.setFooter(footer);
   }

Those are indeed the correct examples.
MoviesCountries1.java can be used to produce page 1/100, page 2/100,...
but the TwoPasses.java example gives you more freedom regarding the layout.

Wow, you're right. The example in the book (page 173 fig 5.18) doesn't use

look into showTextAligned() .

Thanks

Re: [iText-questions] Question about page number footers

2011-03-23 Thread dwhite
Sorry guys, I found the problem. I thought I set the footer flag to false,
but it was true which is why it kept appending the actual page number to the
end of my footer string. Also I wasn't incrementing the page number so when
I printed it the value was 0. Thanks for your help.

[iText-questions] question about reading a pdf file and get hyperlinks

2011-02-21 Thread Leonardo Heidrich
Hi,

I'm trying to read a pdf file and get all hyperlinks from this file.
I'm using iTextSharp for C# .net. Below follow the code that I'm using:

*PdfReader reader = new PdfReader(D:/teste.pdf);   *

*  ListPdfAnnotation.PdfImportedLink list = reader.GetLinks(1);*

This method GetLinks return a list with a lot of information about the
links, but this method does not return the value that I want, the hyperlink
string.

Do you have some idea to resolve my problem?

Best,
