Re: [JAWS-Users] Question about Text columns

I change the columns to one from the page-layout tab on the ribbon, alt
followed by p, followed by j. Then you can choose one column. That can
present a problem, however, if you need to do any editing.

With the folder that you want to change opened, open the context menu with
alt-v. Then choose o for options. If you have the items in the folder in
alphabetical order, the arrangement by name will be checked. Press enter
while you are focused on this option. The list will reverse from Z to A.

Hey Trish,

Just do what I do. Never uninstall a JAWS version. Each one only takes a
couple hundred megs and this laptop has a 750 gig hard drive so it's not
like I'm hurting for space. I suspect that most JAWS users also have plenty
of space on their machines. Leaving all JAWS versions doesn't hurt anything
but removing them might so I just leave them just to be safe. I know,
removing previous versions shouldn't hurt anything but I've seen plenty of
times when things that shouldn't hurt anything in fact do.

Thanks,

well then, sounds like you can't uninstall anything since it's all dependent
of each version. I have still only removed the talking installer for J12,

Trish,

But if you have more than one copy of JAWS on the laptop
they all share the same shared files. So, if you remove an
older version of JAWS and remove shared components my guess
is you will have trouble with version 15 and/or 16.

I'll tell you how temperamental this process can be.
Yesterday I uninstalled JAWS 14 leaving shared components in
place. Following that I removed the talking installer for
version 14. I then rebooted and JAWS 16 came up as expected.
I then had some work to do in MS Office 2010. I use virtual
ribbon option and as soon as I hit the alt key to get to the
ribbons, no speech. This was true in all Office programs.
So, I tried JAWS 15, same thing. I turned virtual ribbon
option off and ribbons worked fine. Turned it back on and no
go. Fortunately Win 7 automatically creates a restore point
prior to any install or uninstall. So, I restored to point
before uninstalling JAWS 14 and all is well. So, there you
have a problem even when keeping shared components. Just
thought I'd share

Best,
Al

If you are running JAWS and Open Book, or JAWS and Magic,
then this is where your shared components come into play.
two Freedom Scientific products can share some of the same
components of one's installation. Therefore, if you have two
of these installed on your computer, and you uninstall the
shared components when uninstalling, say, JAWS, then Open
Book will not work properly.

I do not believe it really makes a difference. The important
thing is whether you want to uninstall the shared
components. Personally, I always choose no to this because
if there are other programs relying on those shared
components they will not work correctly. If anyone else on

If I modify a document and save it about 50 percent of the time I can not
really save or exit. I get changes have been made to the global template.
It then starts a vicious cycle and I usually just restart the computer,
bring up the file and make the changes a second time. This is on a win 7

[JAWS-Users] Wildcard Searches Once More

2013-07-29 Thread Virgil Cook
In an earlier note, I asked, Does anyone know how to perform a wildcard
search for files using Jaws 14 and Windows 7? I should have elaborated.

I want to perform a wildcard search to find related files, draft*.*, for
example. In Windows 7, how does one perform such a search. A friend
suggested choosing computer on the desk top and then choosing Library,
which I can't find without using the Jaws cursor/mouse pointer. What do I
do after choosing library, assuming that's the route to take.

Does anyone have a solution?

Thank you.

Susie,

When you talk about adding it to the Stream, what do you mean, the Victor
Stream?

When you open any document, you can always select save-as and save it as a
different version. I thought you were wanting to make all your documents in
Word 2010 in the old .doc format.

Word and JAWS are two different programs, just as Microsoft and Freedom
Scientific are two different companies. Microsoft Word has what MS calls
insert Mode.

JAWS has what FS calls Insert Mode. they are different from each other.
Now forget for a minute about Microsoft word.

the JAWS one, which Allen was seeking (and which I mentioned in a reply of
last Friday evening), is for one-handed users or those who, for some reason,
prefer to use only one hand on the keyboard. the inssert key (which gives
its name to the mode under discussion here) is the most common of the
specific JAWS modifier keys. You'll find reference to it if you type Insert
in the JAWS Settings Center edit.

Open the Find and Replace menu with control-h. Route the Jaws cursor
 to
 the
PC cursor. Go to the bottom line with the end key and then press
 home to
move the cursor to the bottom line. Use insert-right arrow to move
 across
the line a word at a time. The first word should be more. Left
 click
 on
that word with the slash on the numeric keypad.. Press home and move
 to
 the

 format,
 and
the next word should be special. Left click on special with the
 slash
on the numeric keypad. The first word in the list should be
 paragraph
mark, the word that Microsoft uses for a hard return. After
 clicking,
 use
insert-right arrow to replace. I usually replace the paragraph
 mark
 with
a space to prevent the word at the end of one line coming together
 with
 the
word at the beginning of the next line. Then press alt-a to replace
 all
occurrences of the word. Then press OK. Then exit the Find and

 then
 you
will have to be creative in preventing eliminating the double lines.

move the cursor to the bottom line. Use insert-right arrow to move

 click

 paragraph

 clicking,
 use
insert-right arrow to replace. I usually replace the paragraph
 mark
 with
a space to prevent the word at the end of one line coming together
 with
 the
word at the beginning of the next line. Then press alt-a to replace
 all
occurrences of the word. Then press OK. Then exit the Find and

 then
 you
will have to be creative in preventing eliminating the double lines.

Caret p is the paragraph mark. Caret k is a page break, and caret T is the

  Hi Mike,

In your document, press control+h to go into your Find Replace

field blank. tab to Replace All or press alt+a. After a bit, word will
tell you that it has made xxx replacements, xxx being the number of

If you don't see the ^p option (if it's grayed out), then activate the
Special button menu by pressing spacebar on it. It's on one of the tabs

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Alt Tab in Windows 7

Hi Everyone,

I posted about this a while back but I didn't get any response. I thought
that I would try again and see if I can explain myself a bit better. Sense
I have started using Windows 7, I have been having a problem with using alt
tab to switch between programs. For example, lets say that I have open
JAWS, Excel, Word, Outlook, and Internet Explorer. I am in Excel and I need
to look up something on the net so I alt tab over to Internet Explorer.
Now, I try to alt tab back to Excel but I cannot. Alt tab will only go
between IE and JAWS. So, I use insert F10 to bring up the JAWS window list
and select Excel from there. Now that I have done that, I can again alt tab
between all of the open programs. Is there a setting that I can change to
make it so that all of the open programs are always in the alt tab rotation?
I don't know for sure that Windows 7 is what is causing the problem but I
have used all flavors of Windows back to Windows 3.1 and I have not had this
problem before. I upgraded to JAWS 13 at the same time that I upgraded to
Windows 7 so I suppose that JAWS could be the problem. I would appreciate
any suggestions.

Thanks,

Scott Duck

In Windows 7, I open the list of items in the system tray with Jaws key and
f11. If you have a thumb drive connected, Safely Remove Hardware will be in
the tray. Choose it and press enter. Choose the drive with the thumb drive
and press enter. When you get the message that it is safe to remove the
device, do so.

Robert,
This is the easiest way I have found to make sure that a jump drive is ready
for removal.

1. While the jump drive is still connected, open the Computer option.
2. Now arrow down until you hear that particular drive mentioned.
Important! Do not open the drive.
3. Press the Applications key. In most cases, the letter J is a first
letter navigation to the Eject option.

Note: If you hear a warning bell, this is one of those units which have
their own disconnect feature. In that case, look for the drive in the
system tray, tab over to some of the options until you find something like
Shut Down or the equivalent. Just press Enter on that option and the system
will do what is necessary to prepare the unit for removal.
If all else fails, shut down your computer and then remove the drive. When
the computer shuts down, it loses connection with the drive.

very time consumeing. I was wondering if someone can send me a list of key
commands that would make it easier for me to swim through this document

I am using jaws 13 with windows 7 and adobe 10. If anything, could anyone
from this list e-mail me privately and give me instruction if I send them
this 165 page report to use as an example? It might help me grasp it more

Hi All,

I am using JAWS 12, MS-Office 2010 Outlook on a Windows 7 machine. When I
want to save an attachment from an Outlook message I am having trouble
getting the attachment to be saved in a specific folder. I've confirmed
that the file is saving as I can search for it and find it, but it is not
ending up where I want it. Here is what I am doing:

. Highlight the message with the attachment in my Inbox. I do not
open the message.

. Use Alt+F to open the File menu and down arrow to save
attachments.

. A dialog box opens and I tab to OK and press Enter. This dialog
box might only come up when I am saving multiple attachments from the same
message all at once.

. I use Shift+Tab 2 or 3 times to get to my folder list .

. I use the up and down arrows to find the folder I want to put the
attachment into, and press enter.

. Tab to Save and press enter.

Am I missing a step? How do I confirm that I have opened the folder where I
want to put the attachments before I activate the save button?

Thanks,

Annette

Janie,
Thanks so much. Using alt+d worked. However, how do you get out of the
address field back to the website page?

What is your e-mail program? For Microsoft programs, control-u is a toggle
to turn underlining on and off. Highlight the words that you want
underlined an press control-u.

An underscore is the shift of the hyphen. Press both keys together.

Hi David,
Yes it is worth it, get yourself signed up. I have attached to this a guide
to help a little but keep in mind the site is always changing. The easiest
way I found is to go to m.facebook.com although you need to set your
profile up on the regular site.
Good luck and have fun!
Trisha
BTW, this guide was given to me by a nice person from this list a while ago.
