Re: slow cursor speed
Scott, Sorry to trouble you again. As mentioned below, downgrading to 2.3.0 fixes my slow cursor speed issue. It however does present the new problem of no being able to edit files I have written since. Specifically I get this error message now: filepath.lyx is from a newer version of LyX and the lyx2lyx script failed to convert it. Is there a straightforward workaround? Hi Scott, I found a clue. The problem of slow cursor speed is not present in 2.3.0, but it is present in all versions subsequent to that. Re: slow cursor speed
Hi Scott, Thanks. So to summarize, the most recent versions of LyX on my MacOS Monterey setup led to increasingly slow typing and cursor speed with increasing paragraph length, even for paragraphs not very long with nothing else in the document. The fix seems to be to revert to version 2.3. Scott, Well an unfortunate update. Scrolling works fine. But select (shift arrow) scrolling has the same issue of being slower with longer paragraphs. Stephan, Unfortunately I spoke too soon. There was improvement, then it slowed to a crawl again. Worse than before if anything. Re: Laggy cursor
You’re genius. Thank you. Deleted old python installation. Installed new python installation from Python.org. Fingers crossed all better now. No laggy cursor and no hiccups on lyx initialization. So to recap, the fix for a slow cursor with long paragraphs was to reinstall Python confirming it shows up in /Applications Tim On 10 Aug 2023, at 5:27, Stephan Witt wrote: > Am 10.08.2023 um 07:11 schrieb Tim Garrett : >> >> Thanks. Thanks. Not sure I did it right, but this is what I did. Added that string to the PATH as follows /Library/TeX/texbin:/usr/texbin:/sw/bin:/sw/sbin:/opt/local/teTeX/bin:/opt/local/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/Users/tgarrett/opt/anaconda3/bin quit, restarted, reconfigured. Hi Scott, Thank you for the quick response. Definitely not a branch. If the source LaTeX pane is the code preview pane, that is not open either (I also noticed that suggestion searching through threads). Re: Voice Recognition Accessibility
I can't help you directly -- but consider instead setting up Nuance Dragon Dictate to put LyX into LaTeX insertion mode, then translate LaTeX directly. This will give you everything that LyX can give you, with the benefit -- to other users if not immediately to you -- of being useful for any tool that supports LaTeX, not least being folks who might light to author documents in LaTeX directly. Quoting Jodin Morey : Hello Lyx Developers, My name is Jodin, and I recently graduated with my doctorate in mathematics. I have a disability which requires me to use voice recognition to input mathematics into my computer. For the last 10 years or so, I have used three pieces of software (on Windows) to accomplish this. However, recently two of these software packages (Scientific Notebook and MathTalk) stopped being supported (the underlying companies went out of business). As a result, I have been looking for some other software I might be able to use. The voice recognition software I use (the primary desktop voice recognition software in existence) is Nuance Dragon Dictate. It was recently purchased by Microsoft, so it is doubtful that this piece of software will become unsupported anytime soon. However, there are no longer any off-the-shelf software packages which translate the recognized words into math, so I am interested in developing something along these lines. In particular, I thought I might develop something around Lyx. It's unfortunate that the voice technology allowing people with disabilities to write mathematics has recently disappeared. I am hopeful that Lyx can become the future provider of this capability. I like Lyx because it is open source, and I wish to avoid relying on another piece of software that is profit based, and might go out of business someday. The idea is to create hundreds of scripts in Dragon Dictate. That way, when I say "VarOmega," for example, Dragon Dictate will turn my voice into words, recognize the words as a Dragon Dictate Script, which can then choose from a pulldown menu on Lyx, or just enter the right keystrokes. The main barrier I face right now (other than the time it will take to develop all of the scripts), is that many of the mathematical objects in Lyx are not available either through a menubar or keystroke. So my request to the developers would be to add keystroke accessibility to as many mathematical objects as possible. To make things easier, these keystrokes do not need to be documented in any way. You needn't add the keystroke information on the user interface (for example, when you hover your mouse over the button for the math object, or in the help documentation). The point would not be to offer the average user a quick keystroke. And to that end, the keystroke could be very obscure (e.g., Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Meta+K), it doesn't need to be simple at all. Doing this does not limit Dragon Dictate's ability to type the keystroke, and simultaneously opens up a lot of keystrokes. Regardless, I will start developing this the voice recognition capacity with the keystrokes you currently have available, as I need it for my own purposes. However, I believe developing this more comprehensively is an important thing for the disability community. And I believe the coding effort required is somewhat minimal. -- Jodin -- lyx-users mailing list lyx-users@lists.lyx.org http://lists.lyx.org/mailman/listinfo/lyx-users -- lyx-users mailing list lyx-users@lists.lyx.org http://lists.lyx.org/mailman/listinfo/lyx-users

Re: Quicker build
Can you identify why it takes so long? Are you splitting it up by chapter? I would certainly expect that a per-chapter rendering would take less time (at least per chapter), unless the document contains a lot of cross-references. Usually the reason I need to do frequent document compiles is to make sure I'm getting my equations right -- if you could configure Lyx to not compile the references (or whatever it is that is slow and that you don't need on an immediate basis) when you build per-chapter, then perhaps your speed will go up? Quoting Daniel : Hi, My manuscript takes very long to fully compile, a couple of minutes. I have already tried to only compile parts of it but there was not much difference. Since LaTeX is running several rounds in order to get all the references and such right, is there a way to get LyX to run less rounds? Daniel

Run pdflatex multiple times?
Hello all, I'm having issues with misaligned float elements, TOC items, captions and such (tufte-book class). Restarting lyx and compiling a fresh pdf document (whicht takes longer than otherwise) solves these problems most of the time. Can I tell lyx to run pdflatex, say, three times and/or delete all temporary files before compiling? Thanks for your help, Tim

Hi Scott, Thanks for your prompt response. 1/ I'm currently using Ubuntu version 16.4. 2/ I created a file using Lyx version 2.0.8.1 which is my back up file. 3/ I installed Ubuntu 16.4 and Lyx 2.2.2 from Ubuntu software application. Opening and saving with newer versions could change something you don't want. Did you create the file using 2.0.8.1? Which version of LyX are you using now? How did you install that version? (e.g. from Ubuntu PPA?). There is no Ubuntu 14.0. Do you mean 16.4? Scott

AGUjournal template from class
Hi, I am looking for a way to use the AGUjournal.cls for AGU's journal Space Weather within a Lyx Template. The latest version of their latex class was updated on 2016-11-03. The Lyx template for AGU journals seems to use the now outdated AGUTeX.cls which doesn't have a journal class option for Space Weather. AGU publish several journals with the same .cls file. From what I acn gather the journal name should be specified for the old AGUTex Lyx template in the Document Settings>Document Class>Class options as a code i.e.:jgrga. For the new AGUjournal.cls this is done in the LaTeX switch \journalname{Space Weather}. Strangely, the Lyx template for an AGUTex paper provides a link to http://wiki.lyx.org/Examples/AGUTeXwhich tells us to download the newer AGUjournal.cls from https://publications.agu.org/files/2016/11/agu-template-updated-20161103.zip then the instructions for Linux on the wiki say to copy the outdated agutex.cls file to a location. This zip file doesn't contain the agutex.cls file because it is outdated. It was easy to modify these instructions to copy the newer AGUjournal.cls but this has left me wondering if I've done something wrong. Is there a Lyx template that uses the latest AGUjournal class? Or is there some way to use it? I'm using Lyx 2.1.4 on Ubuntu 16.04. Thanks in advance. Tim PS: I'm a huge fan of Lyx, I used it to write my PhD thesis and am very grateful to the community that wrote it. Thank you. Re: Message error when compiling
And note that, sometimes, when you're trimming a file down for that "minimal example" you end up doing such a good job narrowing things down to the real problem that you find the solution itself. So even if you disregard the benefit to the community, it's not just wasted work. Re: RCS Version Control on Windows
Have you tried making sure that the RCS archive is getting copied across? If you're just transporting the lyx file then you will, of course, not be getting the history in the archive. Can you find a cloud-based version control service (Github? -- I'm so naive)? Your version control wouldn't be integrated with lyx, then, but RCS is so old it creaks. The Example per screenhot causes the compilation to PDF to run endlessly. I cannot interrupt the process and am forced to cut the power off. That makes it even worse - in most cases I am left with a spoiled file (0 bites). However, sometimes the file (a child document) remains intact and if I then remove the example the export to PDF succeeds as normal. All characters had been typed in using the keyboard. I want to add that none of those characters used in the Example poses a problem when typed in normal text or in a gloss as a single character. I can't tell you what's going on (aside from the fact that you've probably found a way to make TeX recurse or loop), but I'll bet that whoever _can_ tell you what's going on will want to see the Lyx file that causes the problem. Attach it, maybe? If the thing is huge or proprietary, try trimming your document down to the one offending equation. That'll either provide a nice, compact Lyx file to distribute, or it won't cause the problem in the first place which will be usefully educational.

Special Characters in References
I'm trying to reference a book by a Swedish author. Putting {\AA}strom95 as a key in my bibliographic entry causes the table at the end of the article to print correctly, but in the text I get [?]. Is there a way to do this, or am I stuck with Astrom or Aastrom (neither of which thrills me). -- Tim Wescott www.wescottdesign.com Control Communications systems, circuit software design.
Line breaks in URLs
I tried putting a really really long URL into Lyx, expecting that it would get line breaks forced as necessary to fit. That didn't happen -- instead, it just gets truncated. Is there a way to force line breaks in a URL, or even (oh be still my heart) to tell Lyx to make it happen? I removed that text and rewrote it so it no longer had the blue underline. Now appendices all render fine as PDF. Coincidence? Perhaps. Bizarre, definitely but anyway, it is no longer a problem... Appendix issue
Hi, I am working on my PhD thesis using LyX 2.0.5 on OS X 10.8.2, and the weirdest thing is happening with my appendix. I have set up the appendix region (using start appendix here) and included the appendix files in my parent document. The TOC outline and the Navigator see them perfectly, and title them correctly as Appendix A Appendix B Appendix C etc. - wonderful However when I render the document as a PDF, they all get renamed to Chapter, all except the first appendix - which still retains the title Appendix A. Even if I put multiple appendices in just one lyx file, it still keeps the name Appendix A for the first appendix but changes every later one to chapter. Any thoughts as to what is going on?

Evince isn't available for mac. But, your suggestion led me to try open -a /Applications/Preview.app (something I should have thought of earlier), and that works like a charm. Separately export all child documents
Hello all, I have a large document consisting of one master document and several child documents. Is there a convenient way to export all child documents to separate documents? Currently I open each child document and export it to (say) pdf separately. I then have chapter1.pdf, chapter2.pdf chapter3.pdf etc. This is a bit tedious so I was wondering if there was a way to define a shortcut to do this or use the lyx-server? I use LyX 2.0.4 on MacOS 10.6.8. Thank you, Tim -- http://j.mp/timhead

pdf preview in LyX 2.0
I just updated to LyX 2.0 (mac os X 10.6.8) and the pdf preview feature no longer works. It used to pop up in adobe acrobat. Now LyX successfully processes the file, but no longer opens the acrobat window. I am still able to successfully export a pdf to my directory tree, but of course this requires the extra step of opening before the file is viewable. I have tried hard-wiring the pdflatex executable to acrobat under Preferences -- File Handling --File Format -- Viewer but to no avail. I can open a dvi but dvipdfm doesn't work, so I suspect there's something in the link to the pdf handler that is broken. Thanks for advice. Tim
