RE: Completely, waaayyyy OT: Architecture - Personal
Hi John, Right click on a location on the map and select What's Here and google will give you Longitude Latitude. You can use the numbers Google Maps gives you as a link. If you're talking about what I think you're talking about try plugging 51.669177,0.003191 into Google Maps as your search term and it will give you a green arrow right in the middle of their driveway. Seems to be called The Grange. Street view doesn't give you much since Google's street view vehicles won't go into the private drive, but you can tell from moving along Sewardstone Road that it's a gated community they have an earth berm separating them from the Premier Lodge (AKA Premier Inn Waltham Abbey). Plus they're all single story units. Immediately next door to it is the 'Bakers Arms' where most of the residents can enjoy a meal and a drink. It isn't bad, been in there a few times. One problem I had at first is the map link for the Premier Inn is mis-located. The link icon is located in their driveway. Again, using street view from Sewardstone Road, you find that the Premier Inn is the larger building just south of where the map link is located. Then the immediately to the north of it makes sense. Thanks. Yes, that's it, The Grange. Very difficult to see that driving past on such a busy road. Looks like the view to the north east would be mostly open field with the commercial greenhouses along Avery Rd. To the west northwest is pasture (?) and then that very odd looking park-like area with all the mounds and curiously shaped tree planters. [GUNPOWDER - A New Country Park, by the sign ... you can sometimes read the signs in street view] Most of the commercial greenhouses are no longer used. There is a haulage company that parks trailers in one of these sites. The view to the rear is towards High Beech and very attractive. The view across the fields has the access road to Junction 26 of the M25 motorway which was part of Quinton Hill Farm. Gunpowder Park is a bit of open space and managed park land. It was originally the RD location for the Royal Ordnance site that was developed for housing and the warehouse - the park was part of the requirement for open space. The Gunpowder Mills were in another location the other side of the town but they use the name all over the place. And beyond that is the housing development that looks like nothing more than a miniature version of Little Winging from the Harry Potter movies before you ever get to the warehouse and the motorway. I doubt they can even see the warehouse from their location. You can John, only too clearly. Plus the drone from the M25 motorway is noticeably audible much of the time. Probably the views aren't all that worse than many suburban landscapes. Probably not, but I think for the location I might have wanted a little more brick and a bit less glass. Plus, I think there's only three houses there. They look like the first two have an attached (or semi-attached) garage providing a visual divider between the units. They had planning for six. It's a common issue here. Ten mins further down the same road, a large house was demolished with land and an application for 118 houses went in. Although refused, a second application for 70+ was granted and then we had the financial crash. They've finally moved plant on to the site now, but from the land that has been cleared, it won't be 70 odd houses going up. The garages sound like later additions. I'll take some pictures this weekend and get them posted. This road has had so much change to it (and ongoing) it would make a great photographic project. RE: Brought to you by Tom C
Yea, great. But how was the toothpaste? Ignore the last one. Friggin Microsoft. Well, that was fun. Even the plane rides were bearable. Thanks to the generosity of Tom, I was given the very pleasurable opportunity to visit Chicago this past weekend. It happened that this weekend also coincided with the Chicago Celtic Festival, so there was entertainment. But especially, there was the gallery opening for the PDML Show. So, I got to Chicago latish Thursday evening. The escape from Canada flight was on was on a scale model of a very small cattle car that had jet powered wings. And, the buggers busted me for having too much toothpaste. But, I had no seatmate, so it was all good. The flight to Chicago was on a somewhat larger version of the same thing, but my seatmate was a relatively small woman who was quite decorative and friendly, and I had bought some 10 cent per ml Crest, so that was fine as well. When I debarked, Tom phoned and told me he was right outside. The seatmate led me through the terminal and off she went, and a few moments later I was in the passenger seat of Tom's Renta-A-Toyota. After checking out our room on the 27th floor of the downtown Sheraton Posh Hotel, we found a little bar and had a nice meal and drinks. I believe we closed the place. And then sat up until 4:00 catching up on stuff. The very next morning after too few hours sleep, we went for a walk. We found a very busy but efficient breakfast place called the West Egg Cafe where we had a very nice breakfast. And Tom, I think you have to admit it was the best breakfast we had, no matter what you thought at the time. And we found a very big lake. And we found Navy Pier. We found all sorts of cool stuff, and then we found Harry Carey's, and we stopped for lunch. I think we both had the Blackened Tenderloin. It was quite wonderful, and washed down nicely with a nice ale. And we walked some more, and then went back to the hotel. It was a good day, and I would have been quite satisfied to call it a success on many levels, but there was still more to come. For this was the night of the PDML Show opening. And off we went. Finding a liquor vendor along the way was a good thing to do, so we laid in a supply of whiskey and wine for laters, and to the gallery we went. It was quite fun. I met a whole bunch of PDML members who also came to the show, and I also got to meet Sue, the curator of the gallery. The show is well worth seeing. I had seen all of the pictures on the web, but nothing prepared me for the splendour that was hung on the walls of the Scharpenberg Gallery. We are an incredibly talented bunch of photographers, and I am proud to be a member of this community. Talking about talented photographers, I coudn't believe that Ted actually talked to me. I may not have given him any choice though. But he still talked to me. Actually, everyone was quite gracious. Especially Tom. After the show, Tom, Ann, Jay and myself went to a little Pizzeria that served what I believe was a Chicago Style Deep Dish Pizza. After that, a bottle of wine and a few hours of sleep, and we found ourselves in the Sheraton's food for exorbitant profit centre, and then off to the Chicago Art Institute and the William Eggleston Exhibit. Gonzo Photography. I suspect that he and Hunter Thompson smoked a few together. And then some silly tourist photography, back to the gallery for a dose of Matisse, and supper with the whole gang at a place that Tom's Voodoo Device said was permanently closed. After we were done with it. But seriously, more good food, and I got to see Jostein's book from his trip to Penguinland. More seriously good photography there, and then we were off to the park, where loud music was calling. Apparently, we are too fucking old, because it chased us away. But I digress. Refreshing beverages were in order, but after making the mistake of trying to park closer to the bar, and having an epic fail with a parkade, Tom chickened out so we went back to the hotel. Where we had a small but adequate stock of refreshing beverage. And then, far too soon, this morning and off to the airport. It was truly a pleasure to meet in person, more members of this community. Meeting Boris and Jostein was what I'll remember the most, simply because of the effort that they made to be there. Seeing Ann again was truly a pleasure. Cory, did you really say you couldn't believe you were shaking my hand? By my count, 18 of the 44 artists who have pictures in this show were in attendance, and whether I was meeting you for the first time or reacquainting myself with you, it was a pleasure to be there. A friend of mine, who shoots a different brand of camera is envious of what we have here. The PDML is, apparently, quite unique. And at the end of the day, it, and this show, would not have happened, were it not for Doug

Something Funny Happened On the Way to Chicago
Thought I'd give my words and thoughts on the exhibit. I was actually just finishing typing this up last night when Bill's summary came through, and I sent it several times but nothing I originated last night would get to the list. It was wonderful to meet in person, those one has been acquainted with for some to many years, +12 in some cases. The printing job Mark did was astounding! My gallery image had a quality and feeling that did not come through on a digital display. The same can be said for the other images. The gallery was a work of art... far more inspiriting than the Eggleston gallery at the Art Institute we visited. :-) Christine and Sue Barton did an excellent job of organizing and implementing the event. For those who weren't able to attend, you'll be happy to know that we were all treated and respected as photographers and artists, not as a bunch of wannabes. As in any group some clicked and bonded more readily than others with various members, but things were so fast paced that it was a matter of not having the time to make the rounds in detail. The cooperation and goodwill among the PDML members, curators, and visitors was impressive. It was noisy, high energy, and for being only three hours, pretty exhausting. This was an event the PDML can be singularly proud of, participant or not. The event and sales also benefit children who are victims of cancer and their families. So if hesitant to purchase additional books or possibly sponsor riders in an upcoming event, that may be announced, please consider doing so to the extent possible, according to your desire and means. In particular I got to spend a fair amount of time with Christine, Bob Sullivan, Stan Halpin, Doug Brewer, Ann Sanfedele, Mark Roberts and (embarrassed... forget his wife's name), Boris, Larry Colen, Chris Mitchell and wife, Tim Bray, Jay Taylor, Cory waters and his beautiful wife. Cory's photograph took on magical properties in print. Sorry if I left anyone out. Bill Robb and I stayed up till 4AM one morning and 2AM the next talking about everything and trying to comprehend the meaning of life and Time-Space. I'm happy to report we just about have it figured out and will give an update when we've completed our analysis and have reached a definitive conclusion. I never knew Bill slept in the RAW before. I'd have expected long johns, with him being from Canada and that. Of course it might have felt like a heatwave to him down south in Chicago - or maybe it's something related to digital. The GPS had a hard time getting a consistent signal in the valley of skyscrapers which is downtown Chicago. Twice it went into a mode where it was recalculating at east once per block without the vehicle changing direction. So sometimes it took us 20 minutes to get to a destination when it should have taken under 5. Chicago was a great photo venue and I'm sure many photos of members and the areas we visited will soon start appearing. To sum it up, You were great. You were fantastic. You were great. You were all great! Heavily cropped from the silhouette side. They weren't completely black, but lacked much detail. PS'd mainly to reduce shadows. Actually, I've come to prefer this subdued light. So many sunny side male finch shots are seriously blown out. I've resorted to a -1/2 comp to help control the bloom on their feathers. Yeah, I noted the edge artifacts, but a very conservative sharpening nudge was applied. Thanks for commenting, Christian! Back from Chicago
Wow, what an exhausting weekend! Great fun, though, and always a pleasure (so far!) to meet in person PDMLers whom I've only known via email up until now. As you have all heard, the gallery reception was brilliant. Very nice job by Dank Haus and Christine organizing the event. Remarkable job by Cotty getting any usable video from the web feed! I did take photos during the course of the weekend but I haven't looked at any of them yet. They may be total crap. But I had a good time anyway. I had a stack of Image Wrap books for those who requested them. They were all taken, including the one I'd planned on keeping for myself (or turning over to Jay Taylor, who requested one after the order had been placed). Unfortunately, the amount received in payment by the end of the evening came out short. Bill Rob and arranged that he'd Pay Pal me money for his two. Chris Mitchell paid for all his first thing. And I'm probably missing a couple of others who paid in the midst of the crowd (yes, it got crowded - who'da thunk?) and the cheap champagne, but we're still $316.00 shy of what should have been taken in for the books so we'll do it on the honor system: If you picked up any books and couldn't get payment to me at the time (kind of understandable, under the circumstances) let me know and you can mail me a check or Pay Pal it to me. Here's who *should* have received books in Chicago: Image Wrap books for Chicago 1-4 - Chris Mitchell (for himself, Bob W, Ecke and Dario Bonazza) 5 - Mark Roberts 6 7 - Jostein 8 - Doug Brewer 9 - Christine (for Bill Robb) 10 - Bruce Dayton (possibly being picked up by Larry?) 12 - Stan Halpin 12 - Cory Waters (for Doug Franklin) 13 - Tim Bray -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Back from Chicago
Diane and I made it home last night around 9:00 PM. Only one scary incident when a minivan thought they should have the space we were in at 70mph. Managed to avoid crumpled car by a couple of inches and a loud curse. I can't say how much I enjoyed being with all that attended. Will be posting some shots when I have a chance later today. Few local chores to take care of first. In response to the webcam chat, I only had one small glass of bubbly at the reception. Diane and I spent Friday at the Botanical Gardens so will probably post a couple from there also. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Lightroom workflow Q
I have lightroom on my macbook and also on my desktop. I usually do most of my work on my desktop but occsionally, like when I'm away from home, I'll upload photos to my laptop to clear my flash cards and have a look at what's I've got. It's no problem then to copy those photos over to my desktop on my home network and import them into my desktop library. I just go to the folder with the photos from the appropriate dates and plant it in the correct folder on the other box. When I import them into the library, they get coppied to my NAS for another safety copy. The hitch here is: I'm likely to have made changes to the photo like keywords, developing adjustments, or selection to a collection while I was looking at them on the laptop. Is there any way to import the photos to my desktop library with the changes? I'd also like to mirror my collections from the laptop on the desktop. I'll be picking photos from my trip to, I duno, lets say u Chicago? that I want to put up on my Smugmug page but when I get home, the only way I know of to get that collection on my desktop is to make a list of file #s in the collection and manually select them again. I'm not sure if I've been clear here so poke me if you don't understand what I'm after. I'll try again. Something Funny Happened on the Way to Chicago
Thought I'd give my words and thoughts on the exhibit and Chicago trip. I was actually just finishing typing this up last night when Bill's summary came through, and I sent it several times but nothing I originated last night would get to the list. It was wonderful to meet, in person, those I'd been acquainted with for some time on line, +12 years in some cases. We met Christine and Doug at the entrance on the sidewalk. Instant smiles and hugs. Bill was Canadian. The printing job Mark did was astounding! My gallery image had a quality and feeling that did not come through on a digital display. The same can be said for the other images. Cory's was magical in print. The gallery was a work of art... far more inspiring than the Eggleston gallery at the Art Institute. :-) Seriously, but my own photographs taken with a Brownie Hawkeye at the age of 8 would have rivaled Eggleston's. No don't take that as a brag, I was a terrible photographer at 8, always wanting to see the film in the camera, which did not help matters. Christine and Sue Barton did an excellent job of organizing and implementing the event. For those unable to attend, you'll be happy to know that we were treated and respected as photographers and artists, not as a bunch of wannabes. As in any group, some clicked and bonded more readily than others with various members, but things were so fast-paced that it was a matter of not having the time to make the rounds in detail. The cooperation and goodwill among the PDML members, curators, and vistors was impressive. It was noisy, high energy, and for being only three hours, pretty exhausting. This was an event the PDML can be singularly proud of, participant or not. The event and sales also benefit children who are victims of cancer and their families. So, if hesitant to purchase additional books, or possibly sponsor riders in an upcoming event that may be announced, please consider doing so to the extent possible, according to your desire and means. In particular, I got to spend a fair amount of time with Christine, Ann, Bob Sullivan and his wife, Stan Halpin, Doug Brewer, Mark Roberts and his wife, Boris, Lary Colen, Chris Mitchell and his wife, Tim Bray, Jay Taylor, Cory Waters and his wife. Sorry if I left anyone out. I think I at least met all the PDML members present. Bill Robb (who is Canadian) and I, stayed up till 4 AM one morning and 2 AM the next, talking about everything and trying to comprehend the meaning of life and Space-Time. I'm happy to report that we just about have it figured out and we'll give an update when we've completed our analysis and have reached a definitive conclusion. Bill, I told you we needed just one more bottle. I never knew Bill slept in the RAW. He told me he gets better pictures that way. I'd have expected footed long johns, with him being from Canada and that. Of course it might have felt like a heatwave to him down south in Chicago - or maybe it's something related to digital? Hard to tell what it was all aboot. The GPS had a hard time getting a consistent signal in the valley of skyscrapers they call downtown. Twice it went into a mode where it was recalculating every 15 seconds even when we had not changed direction. So sometimes it took us 20 minutes to get somewhere when ot should have taken just 5. Chicago was a great photo venue and I'm sure many photos of members and the areas we visited will start appearing. A good time was had by all. To sum it up, You were great. You were fantastic. Re: Lightroom workflow Q
On Mon, May 10, 2010 at 8:02 AM, Cory Waters cbwat...@bellsouth.net wrote: I have lightroom on my macbook and also on my desktop. - When I go traveling with the laptop, I create a new Lightroom catalog on the laptop that I import work to for the duration of the trip. The image files are stored in a directory structure identical to what I use on my main system, eg: ~/Photo_Files//in_progress/MMDD[-tag]/filename.RAW ~/Photo_Files//in_progress/MMDD+1[-tag]/filename.RAW etc, where tag is an optional mnemonic like NYC or Mt_Rushmore just to help me locate things in the file system. - The LR catalog, like all my LR catalogs, is stored in a separate subdirectory, e.g.: ~/Photo_Files/Catalogs/YYMM-{trip_name} where I name the trip by destination ... say 1005-NYC_family if I were to jump to NY city this month. - Once I return to my desk, I copy all the image file folders made on the trip to my desktop system and the main file repository there. I also copy the catalog folder from the trip to the desktop system into its matching Catalogs folder. - I then open the trip catalog on the desktop and use the right/control click command in the Folder view to locate the root of the file repository on the desktop. Lightroom will then know where all the files for that catalog are. - And finally, I open my main working catalog and Import from Catalog the entire trip catalog. All image files keywords, adjustments and history, virtual copies, collections, etc., are now incorporated into the main catalog and the working file repository on my desktop system. At this point I quit Lightroom and run my standard backup script which updates the archive system with all the new and revised files. After I do that, I can delete the trip catalog and files from the laptop, as well as the trip catalog from the desktop. -- Godfrey godfreydigiorgi.posterous.com -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Wonderful synopsis of your experience. I, for one, am glad you took the time to write it down - helps me to experience it a bit vicariously. And when you finish the meaning of life - package it up and sell it up with a fast motor drive and sell it! -- Best regards, Bruce Monday, May 10, 2010, 8:08:10 AM, you wrote: TC Thought I'd give my words and thoughts on the exhibit and Chicago trip. TC I was actually just finishing typing this up last night when Bill's TC summary came through, and I sent it several times but nothing I TC originated last night would get to the list. TC It was wonderful to meet, in person, those I'd been acquainted with TC for some time on line, +12 years in some cases. We met Christine and TC Doug at the entrance on the sidewalk. Instant smiles and hugs. TC Bill was Canadian. TC The printing job Mark did was astounding! My gallery image had a TC quality and feeling that did not come through on a digital display. TC The same can be said for the other images. Cory's was magical in TC print. TC The gallery was a work of art... far more inspiring than the Eggleston TC gallery at the Art Institute. :-) Seriously, but my own photographs TC taken with a Brownie Hawkeye at the age of 8 would have rivaled TC Eggleston's. No don't take that as a brag, I was a terrible TC photographer at 8, always wanting to see the film in the camera, which TC did not help matters. TC Christine and Sue Barton did an excellent job of organizing and TC implementing the event. For those unable to attend, you'll be happy TC to know that we were treated and respected as photographers and TC artists, not as a bunch of wannabes. TC As in any group, some clicked and bonded more readily than others with TC various members, but things were so fast-paced that it was a matter of TC not having the time to make the rounds in detail. The cooperation and TC goodwill among the PDML members, curators, and vistors was impressive. TC It was noisy, high energy, and for being only three hours, pretty TC exhausting. TC This was an event the PDML can be singularly proud of, participant or not. TC The event and sales also benefit children who are victims of cancer TC and their families. So, if hesitant to purchase additional books, or TC possibly sponsor riders in an upcoming event that may be announced, TC please consider doing so to the extent possible, according to your TC desire and means. TC In particular, I got to spend a fair amount of time with Christine, TC Ann, Bob Sullivan and his wife, Stan Halpin, Doug Brewer, Mark Roberts TC and his wife, Boris, Lary Colen, Chris Mitchell and his wife, Tim TC Bray, Jay Taylor, Cory Waters and his wife. Sorry if I left anyone TC out. I think I at least met all the PDML members present. TC Bill Robb (who is Canadian) and I, stayed up till 4 AM one morning and TC 2 AM the next, talking about everything and trying to comprehend the TC meaning of life and Space-Time. I'm happy to report that we just about TC have it figured out and we'll give an update when we've completed our TC analysis and have reached a definitive conclusion. Bill, I told you we TC needed just one more bottle. TC I never knew Bill slept in the RAW. He told me he gets better TC pictures that way. I'd have expected footed long johns, with him TC being from Canada and that. Of course it might have felt like a TC heatwave to him down south in Chicago - or maybe it's something TC related to digital? Hard to tell what it was all aboot. TC The GPS had a hard time getting a consistent signal in the valley of TC skyscrapers they call downtown. Twice it went into a mode where it was TC recalculating every 15 seconds even when we had not changed direction. TC So sometimes it took us 20 minutes to get somewhere when ot should TC have taken just 5. TC Chicago was a great photo venue and I'm sure many photos of members TC and the areas we visited will start appearing. TC A good time was had by all. TC To sum it up, You were great. You were fantastic. You were great. You TC were ALL great! WR So, I got to Chicago latish Thursday evening. WR The escape from Canada flight was on was on a scale model of a very small WR cattle car that had jet powered wings. WR And, the buggers busted me for having too much toothpaste. WR But, I had no seatmate, so it was all good. WR The flight to Chicago was on a somewhat larger version of the same thing, WR but my seatmate was a relatively small woman who was quite decorative and WR friendly, and I had bought some 10 cent per ml Crest, so that was fine as WR well. WR When I debarked, Tom phoned and told me he was right outside. WR The seatmate led me through the terminal and off she went, and a few moments WR later I was in the passenger seat of Tom's Renta-A-Toyota. WR After checking out our room on the 27th floor of the downtown Sheraton Posh WR Hotel, we found a little bar and had a nice meal and drinks. WR I believe we closed the place. WR And then sat up until 4:00 catching up on stuff. WR The very next morning after too few hours sleep, we went for a walk. WR We found a very busy but efficient breakfast place called the West Egg Cafe WR where we had a very nice breakfast. WR And Tom, I think you have to admit it was the best breakfast we had, no WR matter what you thought at the time. WR And we found a very big lake. WR And we found Navy Pier. WR We found all sorts of cool stuff, and then we found Harry Carey's, and we WR stopped for lunch. WR I think we both had the Blackened Tenderloin. WR It was quite wonderful, and washed down nicely with a nice ale. WR And we walked some more, and then went back to the hotel. WR It was a good day, and I would have been quite satisfied to call it a WR success on many levels, but there was still more to come. WR For this was the night of the PDML Show opening. WR And off we went. WR Finding a liquor vendor along the way was a good thing to do, so we laid in WR a supply of whiskey and wine for laters, and to the gallery we went. WR It was quite fun. I met a whole bunch of PDML members who also came to the WR show, and I also got to meet Sue, the curator of the gallery. WR The show is well worth seeing. I had seen all of the pictures on the web, WR but nothing prepared me for the splendour that was hung on the walls of the WR Scharpenberg Gallery. WR We are an incredibly talented bunch of photographers, and I am proud to be a WR member of this community. WR Talking about talented photographers, I coudn't believe that Ted actually WR talked to me. WR I may not have given him any choice though. WR But he still talked to me. WR Actually, everyone was quite gracious. WR Especially Tom. WR After the show, Tom, Ann, Jay and myself went to a little Pizzeria that WR served what I believe was a Chicago Style Deep Dish Pizza. WR After that, a bottle of wine and a few hours of sleep, and we found WR ourselves in the Sheraton's food for exorbitant profit centre, and then off WR to the Chicago Art Institute and the William Eggleston Exhibit. WR Gonzo Photography. WR I suspect that he and Hunter Thompson smoked a few together. WR And then some silly tourist photography, back to the gallery for a dose of WR Matisse, and supper with the whole gang at a place that Tom's Voodoo Device WR said was permanently closed. WR After we were done with it. WR But seriously, more good food, and I got to see Jostein's book from his trip WR to Penguinland. WR More seriously good photography there, and then we were off to the park, WR where loud music was calling. WR Apparently, we are too fucking old, because it chased us away. WR But I digress. WR Refreshing beverages were in order, but after making the mistake of trying WR to park closer to the bar, and having an epic fail with a parkade, Tom WR chickened out so we went back to the hotel. WR Where we had a small but adequate stock of refreshing beverage. WR And then, far too soon, this morning and off to the airport. WR It was truly a pleasure to meet in person, more members of this community. WR Meeting Boris and Jostein was what I'll remember the most, simply because of WR the effort that they made to be there. WR Seeing Ann again was truly a pleasure. WR Cory, did you really say you couldn't believe you were shaking my hand?
