Hi Ann, Thanks! No, I don't remember pointing you to it... The quality of the books is much better than Lulu. That's the only reason I'm going with them, otherwise, Lulu has been fine as a company. Re: Image File Transfers - CD to DVD
I second Godfrey's advice. I just got two WD Mybook 500GB drives. USB 2 + Firewire, ~$170 at Newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136030 They are set up as one 500GB RAID volume, and have all my istD, K10D, film scans, and images from various ps cameras. I do have some extra redundancy though: one 250 and one 180 drives that used to have the same data are still there. Plus my 'keepers' are in my ipod, which mostly lives at work. Plus in my spare time I'm slowly making two sets of DVDs, and will leave one at work and the other in my apartment in Argentina, just in case. Call me paranoid :) j On 4/21/07, Godfrey DiGiorgi [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Do yourself a huge favor: - Buy a pair of Seagate 500Gbyte external drives. When they become outdated by 1Terabyte drives at the same price, buy another pair and move the data to them. etc It's the most efficient, easily maintained, reliable backup/archive system available today. You can get some low-cost backup software that will make doing this job fast, easy, consistent and efficient. I do this myself, have been for five years now. It works flawlessly and is FAR easier to maintain than mountains of CDs and DVDs. And it's fast enough to actually be useful. A couple of days ago ago I decided to move the data off 69 CD's, which held the best of my *ist-D shots for the first few months I had it, before getting a DVD burner. I have to say - it was more of a hassle than I expected. I have a spare computer here and just fed it the CD's as I was working on the main PC. The CD's were about 5 years old and none of them were bad - but some read fairly slowly, sometimes taking up to 15 minutes to copy onto the hard drive, vs 3 to 5 minutes for most. A couple failed with CRC errors on the first attempt, but then copied successfully after taking them out and wiping them with a lens cleaning cloth. Now I have 42 gigs of files to burn onto a few DVD's. My main motivation for doing this was to make it easier to find some images - these CD's had the original PEF's plus 16 bit final TIFF's on them, and the files came together in a way that left room for only 5 or 6 images per CD, with a fair amount of wasted space on each disk. Over all though, it took hours to copy these files. Since it was a background task on a machine that I just use for scanning and streaming NPR, it wasn't a major problem. But I have roughly 700 more CD's that someday will have to be moved - if not onto DVD's then onto some future media. OT, since the camera was the M6 with Summicron 50. Sorry. I'm happy with the result, and probably will be shooting this way often. One of my MXs is loaded with Portra 400 right now. http://photoblog.jbuhler.com/index.php?showimage=749 Note: the link goes to a 9000dpi, 16 bit tiff drum scan of the original negative. To view, please download it, have it transferred to film, and printed on fiber paper by a master printer. I suggest using Picto, in Paris. If you don't do this, you don't GET to see my photo, and OBVIOUSLY you don't CARE about photography at all. :) j -- Juan Buhler - http://www.jbuhler.com photoblog: http://photoblog.jbuhler.com a book: http://www.jbuhler.com/book.html -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

Re: PESO: color film for BW
I recently took out the Nikon LS-40 film scanner that I purchased last year and am horrified to discover that I need to re-learn scanning again. Sheesh, it's been a LONG while since I did much scanning... I'm out of practice! Thanks Godfrey. I've been scanning my BW film, but this jpeg was made from the CD with the pics that I ordered at Walgreens :) I think it's an extra $2 or $3, bringing the total for a roll to $6.50 or so for developing + CD (no prints.) The images in the CD are only 1800 pixels wide, so I'll have to scan them for real when I print them, but it's really convenient. j -- Juan Buhler - http://www.jbuhler.com photoblog: http://photoblog.jbuhler.com a book: http://www.jbuhler.com/book.html -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

OT: like having a new scanner
I have a Polaroid Sprintscan 4000. It's a great scanner, but the problem is that it had a scsi interface. So for a few years now it forced me to keep my old Windows PC around. I bought this: http://www.ratocsystems.com/english/products/FR1SX.html It's a SCSI-Firewire interface. I just tried it, and it works beautifully. Vuescan sees the Polaroid from OSX in my Powerbook, and the scans even look better than they did with Silverfast from the PC (or maybe I'm just happy about not having to use Windows ever again.) Highly recommended if you have an older scsi scanner that you want to use with a newer machine. I think I will be shooting more film now. Speaking of Vuescan--if all I want to do is save 16 bit scans, to be processed in PS later, I don't really need to get the pro version, right? j -- Juan Buhler - http://www.jbuhler.com photoblog: http://photoblog.jbuhler.com a book: http://www.jbuhler.com/book.html -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

There's something intensely moody and film noir about this photo. I like it. Thanks, and thanks Paul, David, Bruce for commenting. Re: The Perfect Bag
I'm with Bob regarding having one bag for every occasion. For me, the best bag ever is the Domke 803 satchel. Strong and sturdy, its canvas ages beautifully, doesn't look like a camera bag, it's unpretentious, and can carry my 12 Powerbook if I have to. I'm on my second--the first one is still strong, but after six years of being everywhere it is dirty and looks less elegant than it should. I can fit a body and 3 or 4 lenses in it. j On 3/14/07, Bob W [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: There is no such thing as the perfect bag. Re: Locked SD Card Problem
Not Godfrey, but two things I would try, provided the little plastic write protection tab is not in the lock position: -open Disk Utility (in the Applications/Utilities folder) See what it tells you about the card and if you can format it from there -open a shell (Terminal, also in Applications/Utilities) and look what is in there. Possibly, do it as superuser. It would be something like the following, where indicates the prompt, the rest is what you'd type: cd /Volumes/NO\ NAME (NO NAME is what I think memeory cards are mounted with by default--the name might be different and I don't have my Mac here to try) su (this will make you superuser. You'll have to enter your admin password) ls -l (to see what is in the card) chmod a+rwx . (that will change the permissions of the local directory so anyone can read, write and navigate to it) rm /Volumes/NO\ NAME/* (this woud remove anything in the card--careful, there's no undelete here) Note that the space in NO NAME needs to be 'escaped' by typing a backslash before it when you are in the shell. If you are not familiar with unix, be very careful about using the rm command--make sure you are in the right directory! This should do. Strange though that you'd end up with no permissions to write in that card. j On 3/6/07, Paul Stenquist [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I uploaded the firmware update to an SD card and installed it in the camera. On 3/2/07, John Sessoms [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I think you have it backwards, Tom. The birth of Jesus is based on the calendar, not the other way around. No, the dating system is based on the year of Jesus birth. The original claim by Tom was The fact that really the entire world bases their calendar on the birth of this one man has some power behind it So I was referring to the calendar. As such, and as you correctly state, our calendar is pretty much the one Julius Cesar adopted. It would make sense that the Catholic church, as the natural evolution of the Roman Empire, would keep its calendar. It would also make sense that they would number the years after the birth of their god, but this didn't change the *calendar*. The fact that everybody else used that numbering system has more to do with the power of the Church than with faith, I think. More so, the existence of Jesus of Nazareth as a real person has little to do with any of it. The existence of his story is what all is about. j ps: for the trivia lovers: Miguel de Cervantes died on April 23, 1616. William Shakespeare died on April 23, 1616. But Cervantes died ten days before Shakespeare. You can thank Henry VIII for this little anecdote. :) It was created by the Roman Catholic Church so they'd have an accurate calendar for calculating holy days. The discrepancy comes from when they changed from the Julian to Gregorian calendars. The Julian calendar was a reform adopted by Julius Ceasar while he was Dictator of Rome (in approx 46 BC), also used for calculating holy days. The Julian calendar continued in use during the Roman Empire and after its collapse until Pope Gregory XIII proclaimed the Gregorian calendar in 1582 AD. As far as I know, the reason to think Jesus was born in 4 BC is because it's more accurate with the historical dates for the emperor Agustus's (Octavian) census of the Jews, which took place after the death of Herod the Great in 4 BC. Jesus was supposedly born in Bethlehem because Joseph had to go there to be enrolled And there was an astronomical conjunction in 6 BC, where Jupiter was in the east i.e. a morning star, in close conjunction with Venus in the constellation of Ares; indicating the birth of a king to ancient astrologers.** But because the Roman priests working 1600 years or so later had difficulty reconciling the Julian calendar, the number of years since the supposed year Jesus was born was slightly off in their calculations; short 3 or 4 years, figured as 1582 years, when it was in fact somewhere between 1585 and 1588 years. I don't think anyone really knows for certain. The reason they changed the calendar was because over time the Julian calendar was drifting out of sync with the seasons; the date of the equinox, used for computing when Easter will come, was not the physical day in the year when the equinox actually occurred. By the time of the calendar change was made in 1582 the physical date of the equinox was coming about 1-1/2 months earlier than the calendar date. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net -- Juan Buhler - http://www.jbuhler.com photoblog: http://photoblog.jbuhler.com a book: http://www.jbuhler.com/book.html -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

Re: K10D Image Numbering bug?
Did you take out the battery without a memory card inside, maybe without having turned the camera off first? I think the istD behaved in this way: if you took out the batteries it would later look at the card to figure out the next number. If no card was present, it would use whatever it had saved in its internal memory. But if the battery had been taken out without turning the camera off first, then the camera didn't have the chance to write the last number to memory. All this might be wrong, and it might not apply to the K10D, but I'd pay attention to the factors I mention. I haven't seen anything like this in my K10D, but then again, I'm automatically renumbering all images as I upload them to the computer, so I wouldn;t notice if it happened. j On 12/1/06, Peter Loveday [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Has anyone else had issues with image numbering on their K10D? Re: Re: Re: K10D - what's that rattle?
Fair enough. The acceleration needed to confuse the sensor is bigger than that, though. Besides, that vector would be along the lens axis--perpendicular to the two directions the sensor detects. The best way I found to confuse the sensor is to move the camera to one side, and then to the other, pressing the shutter as I change direction. That isn't something you'd do for real pictures though. j On 11/26/06, John Francis [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Don't forget, too, that the normal panning motion is to rotate the camera. PESOs: K10D
After properly applying black tape over it, I shot with the K10D today. Still couldn't get a real memory card, so I'm using a slow 256MB one, and shooting jpegs. http://color.jbuhler.com/index.php?showimage=148 (K10D, FA35/2) A special edition crocodile skin K10D with aperture simulator will be mailed to the person who guesses what car that is :) I used the TAv mode. Very nice! I set 1/250s, f4.5 in the shadow, and let the meter change the iso. I'd change aperture and shutter speed according to the light, but knowing that the meter would compensate with the iso. Great. I love this camera. The controls are very well laid out, and it took no time to get used to them. It responds fast, and I didn't miss any pictures because the camera was asleep (it has happened with the istD.) The only two things I'd change are the size (I like smaller cameras) and the right strap lug. I couldn't pass my favorite leather Spotmatic strap through it, and I'm using a synthetic one. No big deal, I suppose. The second frame is a more proper street picture. Shel [Original Message] From: John Whittingham Not exactly a glowing recommendation Shel. The trouble is it's difficult to find a lens in this FL range that doesn't have some kind of issues with it, be it Pentax, Nikon, Canon, Sigma, Tamron, Tokina etc, prime or zoom. Now if the Tamron 17-35 XR Di were a bit wider at the short end I might well be tempted. John -- Original Message --- From: Shel Belinkoff While I liked the lens, and found it to be a nice walking around lens, I wasn't quite satisfied with it for critical work and fine details. The standard hood is, imo, inadequate, and the lens is prone to flare and purple fringing in some situations. I actually used two samples, one briefly and another for more than a month, got the fringing with both of them. I didn't like the way it tromboned but soon learned to accept that aspect of it. Overall, I think it's fine for most work, but it would not be my first choice for a lot of photography that I do. I'd consider buying one if the price were right now that I know its limitations, strengths, and weaknesses. My first impressions
K10D is here, battery already charged, manuals rapidly put away and ignored. I'm using an old single speed 256Mb card, because procrastinator me, I didn't order a card when there was a thread about good deals a few weeks back. Even with the old card, jpeg perfprmance is really fast. RAW is about the same as the istD, but of course this is entirely due to the slow card. This camera is big. I knew that, but I prefer the size of the istD. Still, shake reduction, write speed and resolution I think offset the size for me, at least until this sensor appears in a K100D sucessor. Shake reduction works nicely, it seems. I get what looks like acceptable results at 1/8s with the FA50mm/1.7. Nice. Everything feels way faster and more responsive than with my istD. Looking at the menus, seems like you can program the behavior of the dials in the different modes: in P for example, HyP is default, but you can also have program shift and exposure compensation, for example. I tend to use exposure compensation a lot, so this is great. The viewfinder is the same as the istD. That's all for now. I'll be shooting all day tomorrow... j -- Juan Buhler - http://www.jbuhler.com photoblog: http://photoblog.jbuhler.com a book: http://www.jbuhler.com/book.html -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

Re: RE: How to - Recover corrupted DNG
Hi Tim, Some questions about your corrupted files: Are they about the size you would expect? Are they corrupted all in the same way? What do you mean by a bluish screen? Do you see the images? Your best hope is that the corruption is in the non-image data tags. As I understand it, a DNG is a TIFF with extra tags for specific raw file metadata. So you could write or find a program that lets you extract tags independently from your files, and use it to save out the image part, to later combine it with metadata from a non corrupt file. This of the tags I talk about as chapters inside a tiff or dng file. Each chapter has its own unique id number, and there are chapters for things like width, length, type of compression, etc. The image data itself is inside its own chapter (tag.) It shouldn't be too difficult to write a script in Python that does what I say. Given the number of images you say you have corrupted, it would be better if the corruption is consistent from file to file. j On 10/28/06, Tim Øsleby [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Typo in subject line.
