My week was spent fighting computer malware and Yahoo. Yesterday, I finally
gave up and took my laptop to a local computer guru who I found out is about as
enthused with Windows 8 as I am. I don't have Windows 8 on my computer, but I
bought one for my wife a few months ago. Nuff said.

This morning, I tried to pull an empty hopper from the power house track and
derailed an empty hopper on the switch. That's when I gave up and decided to
try my luck on my desktop. So far, the only problem is my inherent inability to
type and to get my spelling right the first time.

Bill, I've been through that roots in the sewer thing a couple of times, I hope
no more. One suggestion - quit giving away your age - your making some of us
feel old!

Good to hear that you have joined the NASG, Andre. You have come on at an

Time for us to all update what we've been doing in S scale. I'll go first:

It's been a hectic two weeks on account of my wife's father's last days and

 * Purchased some Wiseman S scale detail parts off eBay.

 * Purchased the needed items from Northwest Short Line to re-power one of my

all). They run pretty darn good as is, but being a performance freak, I am
wondering if I can make them even a smidge better.

 * Purchased CBQ In Color Vol. 3 that has some excellent KC area shots

 * OH... and it's official now: I'm a bonafide member on NASG! I received my
member's packet and THREE Dispatch issues in the mail this week.

In all, things are reviving and ever so slowly I'm figuring out where I'm at

Hi Dave!

I've heard of others using kitty litter... but the kitty litter I've been
around (we used to have a cat) would turn different shade (darker) once wetted.
What keeps that from happening in model use?

As for using organic materials:

In previous layouts I used real dirt/etc. I would sift dried/pulverized dirt
with a contraption I made using some of the wife's discarded hoisery. I ended
up with a very fine textured and VERY real looking dirt. (Secured with diluted
Matt Medium.) I got the idea from Dave Frary's Kalmback scenery book. (Yeah,
that was a while ago.) Anyway... my biggest concern has been whether ferrous
content was in the material, but a quick pass-over with a magnet will tell the
tale on that one.

I've already been keeping an eye out for suitable materials around the RR yards
and industries where I switch. I intend to harvest raw product and use the
technique again. Best time to harvest is after a long dry spell and the ground
is parchment dry. One of the best places is where trucks enter/leave a
location: They pound the dirt into a talcolm-like consistancy that requires
minimum work to make great ground cover!

An unexpected upside to such an approach is that you get subtle color
variations from harvesting dirt from various locations regionally.

Of course, all of the above is from my FWIW Department.

Haven't heard of the Future Floor Wax approach! Does it have any shine to
it???

As I mentioned previously, I used diluted Matt Medium. BUT... I wasn't 100%
pleased with the results. It would leave little milky-looking residue here n'
there. Not cool. When the time arrives, I will be experimenting to find a
different fixative for my ground cover.

Do your fixatives (note I did NOT say laxitives, NOR am I talking about
afixing your dentures) leave a residue?

My biggest problem is, not what I use, but not using enough of it to further
my scenery efforts.

LOL! Can relate! In my previous layout attempts, that seemed to be an issue,
as well: The scenery never got all the way around the layout!

{S-Scale List} Catching up and FNF

2013-10-05 Thread Jim Cheryl Martin
Hi guys.

I've head my head deep into other stuff lately so to catch up:

1. Kudos to Brooks and Mike for their loco building efforts. IMHO building
locos, especially scratch building, is the highest form of achievement in our
hobby.

2. I enjoyed the August promotional Dispatch. When we visited Scottsdale AZ
last year, Bill Winans (thanks Bill) took me around to see Nelson Steinmetz's
fine layout. I enjoyed Nelson's hospitality, and it's fun to see his layout in
that issue.

3. FNF...I've been spending Fridays and other nights making some scenery
upgrades to my home layout...particularly my Port Dover and Culverhouse modules
that have now been retired from the show circuit. I will be hosting some
S-scalers in a few week's time when I put on my annual CanAm Socia,l so I'd like
to get some more work accomplished before then. Rather than post any photos
here, I'll simply direct those who are interested to the Workshop blog below.

{S-Scale List} S dump trucks from Roy Messner items [5 Attachments]

2013-10-05 Thread Bill Lane
If you went to the convention in Scranton you may have met my friend Gus
Minardi. In spite of much effort on my part to drag Gus into S Scale he is
firmly a lifer in HO. Nonetheless he is a master modeler of all kinds and at
times other scales.

There was not much for Gus to buy at the convention but Gus did buy some
urethane truck components from Roy Messner. The photos are what Gus did with
them.

{S-Scale List} FNF 10/4/13! [1 Attachment]

2013-10-05 Thread David Heine
*[Attachment(s) from David Heine included below]

I finished the turnout I'm describing as a three-way curved stub early this
week. All three tracks curve the same way which makes it very asymmetrical.
The tracks radiating from it will serve a coal mine tipple. I still need to
power and wire it, but I need to purchase a three position servo controller.
Also repaired the mine tipple that I damaged last month with the giant
earthquake with the exception of some of stairs that won't be repaired until
it is back in place. Worked some on the subroadbed and roadbed for a
logging branch that also goes under part of the mine tipple on a grade and
also glued down more ties in this area.

You don't need to carry the laptop around. It runs the JMRI program and

{S-Scale List} Hinged or solid points to throwbar

2013-10-05 Thread Bill Lane
Michael,

Both have advantages. So far I have solid brass throw bars.
http://www.lanestrains.com/My_Layout_Photos/Curved_Crossover_2.jpg It is
pretty strong but I can't have the points jump wired. Point pick up is just
the constant pressure from the stall motor.

Tabs a plastic throw bar might be a little better but more time consuming
to make. A plastic throw bar might fail sooner with the constant pressure
from the stall motor.

Chris,
I probably owe you an update on the turnouts. I said I might get them
done by last weekend, but I found that to be a bit ambitious. I did make
progress on them this week. All the rails are soldered in place. Five of the
six need a bit more solder in the frogs, and then the frogs need to be sawed
out. The sixth one is done. Then any tweaking that needs to be done. I think
I can finish them tomorrow, and mail them out next week.

{S-Scale List} RE: Correct S-12 trucks

2013-10-05 Thread garymccullah

Andre,
Right after I bought my AM S-12, someone (I cant remember who) produced the correct AAR Type A sideframes for the S-12. They are black plastic (Delrin) and mount up in place of the Type Bs that come on the S-12.

Hi Gary! Are you in S scale too? If so, being you're in Farmington, that
makes you the CLOSEST S scaler to me! Why shucks, we're only about an hour and
a half apart!!

Anyway, to the reply:

Well, that would be an ideal solution... but I suspect the supply has long ago
dried up. My hope is to come up with a sustainable replacement/fix. (i.e. A
fix that doesn't depend on items no longer in production.)

However, IF said replacement sideframes are still available, I'm definitely in
the market!

I'm sitting here with my attempt at retrucking an S-12 with SHS trucks.  I got
as far as taking up the 3/8 dufference in truck gear drives, but have never
finished due to physical limitations.  Maybe, someday. . . FWIW

I  remember some early FM switchers had the upper gray initially, I do not
remember where to dig them up.  Why was MILW so heavy on FM?-- Beloit, Wisc.

Subject: {S-Scale List} Quick MILW Question

Stock-piling for future projects:
Anyone know when the Milwaukee Road went to the orange/black scheme for their
diesel motive power?  (Hm... come to think of it, I don't think I've ever seen
a picture of their hoods n' switchers that wasn't orange and black.  But,
traditionally, the MILW hasn't been one of my all-time favorite roads.)

Thanks for any input.

Re: {S-Scale List} Quick MILW Question

2013-10-05 Thread Andre Ming
Hi Dave:

Spent some of this evening trying to a bit of research. Apparently, the
earlier MILW switchers and hood units used a dark gray top, a wide-ish red
separation line, and the same orange type color as used later on the sides and
the same black frames. The numbers were RR roman type font. I can't tell for
sure from the photos that I found, but it also appears they MAY have used the
older tilted rectangle herald under the cab windows.

Couldn't pin down when the change took place to the black/orange with newer
tilted rectangle herald the read The Milwaukee Road. However, if the MILW
was like most of the roads, the paint schemes began to be simplified in the
mid-to-late 50's early 60's.

No biggie, I was looking at an S scale Des Plaines Hobbies MILW decal set on
eBay and thought I snag it for future MILW engines for my KC area layout. May
do it anyway if someone hasn't already bid on it.

Thanks for the input.

Andre
