Thanks Guys. After all these years I had never used httpinst and I had

very handy for a couple of tests queries I ran.

Thanks!

Not directly, but there are other whois sources. Like whsc. Try this:

The other one you can use is whi (WebHosting.info). I can't remember

I like whi because it also provides a very large database of domain-IP

Re: [DQSD-Users] New search: df for word definitions

I was surprised today when this dictionary had no definition for
coruscating which shows in other dictionaries, e.g.

I've mentioned it before here:

MWD's changed the format of their page so much I've given up trying to
make mwd work anymore. They'll just break it again. So here's a
replacement search. It's called df, short for definition.

Here's how I use it. I add: :|df to localaliases.txt, and now when I
need the definition of a word, I type the word with a colon, and the
definition pops up in a little window in the corner.

Please note: I don't know any JavaScript, XML, CSS, HTML or web

not to have. Nothing would delight me more than somebody who knows
what they're doing taking it over and cleaning it up. Enjoy, --David
PS. If anybody does look at the code, you'll see that I only look for
definitions in at most two dictionaries. My selection was based on
experimentation and is quite arbitrary. I wrote the search for me,
after all. But it'd be great to make that customizable, or when a word
is misspelled, to attempt a Match from

 with a strategy from
http://services.aonaware.com/DictService/DictService.asmx/StrategyList. That'd

PPS. There are probably glaring problems with the submitted file. I
apologize in advance. It was only tested on my Windows Vista machine

For anyone wishing to work on it as David suggests, here are some
observations:

When I first ran it I did it with the colon first which hung up dqsd
for me. Normally when this happens I restart explorer by killing the

for some reason and I had to restart.

Doing a lookup with an incorrect spelling causes a popup error:

[DQSD-Users] Cleaning up dqsd.net

2009-02-26 Thread tom . corcoran
Hey,

I was thinking that if I came across http://www.dqsd.net/ for the
first time now I would not even try to install it. The site needs to
be cleaned up.

E.g. currently it says for the Installation Instructions that you need
to be using IE 5.5 or newer...and to 'Please let us know if it works
on various other configurations.' Though further down it says as of
version 2.5.0, thanks to Koen Mannaerts code contribution, you should
now be able to launch Netscape, Opera, or other non-IE browsers using
the deskbar.

Another small e.g., the first item in the faq
http://www.dqsd.net/faq.htm says:
Can I assign a hotkey to it so I don't need to mouse to it?
This feature was added in version 3.0.
What use is that? :-)

I love DQSD and want it to remain vibrant. I think we been doing
ourselves no favours with the website the last number of years and
should think about redoing it. What do others think?

Cheers,

Tom.

Re: [DQSD-Users] comx /dilbert access denied

2009-01-09 Thread tom . corcoran
hey Shawn,

Happy new year! Not wanting to put any pressure on you, but I know I'm
not the only one excited about your pending fix!

Cheers,

Tom.

Re: [DQSD-Users] comx /dilbert access denied
From: Shawn K. Hall sh...@re... - 2008-11-11 04:03
That's exactly the same error.

The only thing that jumps out at me is that the code in comx is using
synchronous XML-HTTP transfers, it isn't changing the UA, and isn't
checking for errors, which can all cause issues.

If the UA isn't changed you may end up where the server flat-out rejects
attempts to connect from the MS XmlHttp object (mine does).

Synchronous transfers can cause stale or broken connections if the
connection is refused or for any other reason the server doesn't return
content. Finally, without error trapping, there's no way to tell what
the error could be.

I'm going to put this on my short list for rewriting it to make it do
all of the above. It's a lot of code though, so no guarantees it'll
happen right away. On the plus side, it'll be more modular, so new
comics should be a lot easier to add. ;)

Meanwhile, if you look at the rssx search I wrote (lines 42-56), which
comx is based on, you'll see a much better way to handle the remoting
aspects.

[DQSD-Users] Logins with authentication code

2008-11-28 Thread tom . corcoran
Hey,

I have raised the issue before about logging into sites that require
session id's and the like. I was looking at one today that is like
this with the wizard pulling back:

input type=hidden name=authenticity_token
value=55a1820d6538b36c0129c590dc4e4591007c38f9 /

Shawn has mentioned I think that one needs to do a first pass to get
this authentication code. Is there any common javascript routine we
could have that we could call to do some of this work?

Thanks, Tom.

I finally had a chance to install 4.0.0.5 tonight.

There are several problems with it - most notably that it doesn't have
the new images included, not the changes to search.htm, though they were
added to SVN. Please extract the attached file into the DQSD install
directory (flat structure, do NOT extract into a subdirectory).

You can either reboot or close DQSD and reopen it to get it to redraw.

Kim, can you please re-build the installer to include the new and
updated files in the DQSD directory?

 Try this:

 1) Create an addons folder in your Quick Search Deskbar folder then
extract the iptools.zip file into there. If done correctly you will
end up with something like C:\Program Files\Quick Search

Thanks Steve. I suspected something like that but couldn't find any
mention about addons on the dqsd site. Works great anyway! I'm connected

Hey Tom,

I think we already had a fix for that. The search worked for me using
the most recent version, and taking a look at the difference, the
regular expression to match the argument is different but has the same
result:

Your change:

if ( res = args.q.match(/^\s*[qQ]?(\d{6})\s*$/) )

Current version:

if ( res = args.q.match(/^\s*q?(\d{6})\s*$/i) )

...if I'm not mistaken.

Anyway, I used the bulk rename utility to re-enable each letter in turn
starting with a*.disabled. I reloaded each time and worked my way
through. Now with all searches enabled and having rebooted I still get
the same conditional compilation is turned off message :-(

Any thoughts?

Tom.

  Hi Tom,

Having disabled a lot of my searches using the batch
  generated by http://master-minds.net/cgi-bin/disablesearches.cgi
on a reload I now get an error saying conditional
compilation is turned off. Also my local var definitions
in localrefs.js do not seem to be loaded.

It's possible that one of the scripts you've disabled is used
  within the
auto-parser or within another script. For example, dns is
  used within
the auto-parser, so could raise errors when a function from
  it is called
if the script does not exist. Same with the phone number
  lookup or math
functions. There are a couple of scripts and functions I
  wrote that rely
on the vbsx script - which might cause the error you're receiving.

Try re-enabling the scripts one by one (they're just renamed in the
search directory) and reloading it to see if it fixes it.

  -Shawn

[DQSD-Users] Removing disabled searched from help?

2008-02-22 Thread Tom Corcoran
Monty's utility to disable searches is so necessary to help system
startup time - http://master-minds.net/cgi-bin/disablesearches.cgi.

Has anyone looked at the help information lot loading for any disabled
searches? A reload keeps all the disabled searches in the help.

Thanks, Tom.

I just updated my adblock plus in firefox to 0.7.5.3. I closed all
firefox windows and started firefox form dqsd and no error

I can't believe this could be fixed. I put up with that error screen
many times a day for the last couple of years it seems - that shows you
how invaluable dqsd is to me!

I'm stunned this could be fixed. Will test on my work machine too.

Thanks for documenting this George :-)

I have been using Firefox and DQSD for a very long time
without any problems until just recently when I experienced
the Internet Explorer Script Error window - only when

I have never installed the Google toolbar but in light of
one users remedy, I installed it and uninstalled it and of
course the "script error" window continued to show.

A day or two ago, AdBlock Plus 0.7.5.2 was available
and installed here which in retrospect was when the error
 first started.

Today, autoupdate indicated that AdBlock Plus 0.7.5.3
was ready for install which I did and lo and behold, the
"script error" window has gone away. On the
adblockplus.org website it says 0.7.5.3 "fixes an error
message that appears on some installations".

 FWIW.

It is so odd that I am getting an IE script error to launch a FF window.

You will notice too that the about screen shows in IE rather than the

Actually, I had the time just a few weeks ago, and posted my first draft
comx.xml to this list, adding both 'xkcd' and 'dinosaur comics'...
since that time, I've updated it a bit: both comics often include side
jokes (or, possibly the -main- joke) within the info text that pops
up when you mouse-over the image; my updated comx.xml is attached to
 this post.

I don't have rights/access to commit these changes to the project, and
ask again that somebody who *does* have such access, please do so. :-)

...and, Tom -- thanks for the validation ...I was beginning to think I
was the only dqsd-er that appreciated xkcd. :) Enjoy, and please let
me know if it's not working correctly for you. (to install it, just
save the attached comx.xml file to your DQSD scripts directory,
overwriting the one that's there. then, type '!' [without the quotes]
in the DQSD entry window and press Enter to reload.)

[DQSD-Users] cut paste firefox error

2007-05-17 Thread Tom Corcoran
Another thing I notice with the new version is, as reported by Brain
Dunsworth in March, I can no longer paste (ctrl+V or the old trusty

times to be frustrated and realise how much I do this. Is there a way to
get this working? It would be a shame if that functionality was gone now.

Interesting to read that Richard Ahlquist is also getting the ff blowup.
Note I got it after 2 clean installs on 2 different machines. anyone
using this version successfully with the latest Firefox?

Thanks, Tom.

[DQSD-Users] Forcing firefox to open in new window rather than new tab

2007-04-11 Thread Tom Corcoran
I have firefox setup to open new links etc in new tabs. I've taken to
using the excellent virtual desktop utility dexpot and for a couple of
shortcuts,. eg, one to use my search gread to open google reader, I
would like this to break my firefox rule and open in a new browser
instance rather than in a new tab of an existing instance.

Looking at 8.3 http://dqsd.net/faq.htm (How do I configure DQSD to use
Mozilla Firefox with each search opening in a new tab?) and the Mozilla
link it mentions does not offer a clue. Reading
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Command_line_arguments firefox has the command
line option new-window to force an open in a new window. Would there be
any way of hacking a shortcut or something to do this?

Thanks, Tom.

Hi Shawn,

Thanks for the detailed response. btw, thanks also for the info re my

 mozw|run C:\Program Files\Mozilla FireFox 2\firefox.exe -new-window
 %s|Mozilla FireFox 2.x Browser, New Window|Start Mozilla FireFox 2.x,
 New Window|Browsers
 Or a new window like:
   mozw 12pointdesign.com

As for how to configure it to use new windows vs new tabs for all
searches... I don't know. Have you tried?:
   reuseBrowserWindowMode = 0;

I only want it to open in a new window for a particular search not at
all for all searchesi was wondering there might be some way of
passing a parameter (-new-window) in a search to the default browser
(firefox) via some shortcut for the search...

cheers for the ideas.

[DQSD-Users] tips for tinypic search

2007-03-20 Thread Tom Corcoran
I've been looking at doing a search for http://www.tinypic.com. I was
hoping to model it on tinyurl, with the url appearing in the taskbar.

However the page uses an UPLOAD_IDENTIFIER which changes each time, I
guess this is one of those session variables. The tinyurl site does not
seem to have equivalent.

Any tips on how to tackle this one appreciated!

  Unofficial 4.0 build

  I've noticed since installing
this build that F8 no longer works to scroll back through previous
commands (although Ctrl-B still does). Is there an easy config-file
tweak to correct this, or am I just going to have to retrain my fingers?

Here is an unofficial 4.0 build of
what's currently in SVN. (Thanks to Kim for fixing a bug I introduced
since the last build.)

[DQSD-Users] Tinypic - not yet working

2006-11-26 Thread Tom Corcoran
I recently discovered http://www.tinypic.com/, superb is you need to
refer to an image of some kind on a forum etc, where you cannot post an
image. It would be cool to have a search that worked just like tinyurl
does, where one passes it the path to the image and the url gets posted
in the bar. Here's a wizard generated start which _does_ not work if
anyone is in the mood for some debugging and polishing :-)

  Hi!
How do I configure dqsd to default to Google Australia's "pages from
Australia"? The query URL is http://www.google.com.au/search?q=Somethingcr=countryAU.
I defined a local alias as "ga|gg %s /au /local|Australia|Search Google
Australia|Search the Web" but would prefer to just enter a query string
and hit enter rather than try and remember to type "ga" first. I set a
local preference to defaultsearch="ga"; (I think I even modified
searches/gg.xml to recognise the "/au" switch) but that didn't work.
Cheers
Roger.

Hi Shawn,

Can you be more specific about the error?
Have you tried clearing your history?

I finally coped myself on and installed the current version and that
problems has gone away. [I added some faq items for moving dqsd to
http://www.moonbade.com/dqsd]

Also with the new version the iphunt search does not work - I think the
site might be down. I've tried several times over the last few weeks.

[DQSD-Users] script error in 3.1.9.1

2006-10-05 Thread Tom Corcoran
I have lately found a problem where if i type
anything.co.uk
into dqsd I get a script error.

Does anyone else get this?

Maybe the solution is to install 3.1.9.2 but with all the problems with
SP 2 and the fact I install all my apps on the e drive (have to move the
default install), it's a lot of hassle. I wish someone would add a
custom install to enable changing of the destination :-)

Thanks, Tom.

Try this table instead:
http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/sgml/entities.html#iso-88591

That worked. Attached is the fixed uktv search which was broken. As well
as fixing it I have updated it to use yy/pp style login details if they
are available. The problem exists where the full help is not shown, as
I highlighted in another post. So the accented channels do show
correctly but will never be seen as the help window does not have a scroll.

In the uktvguide search at this point in the code I would like to be

[DQSD-Users] YaGooHooGle search misisng

2006-05-18 Thread Tom Corcoran

I don't think John W. Bairen's YaGooHooGle search was added to cvs :
http://tinyurl.com/mjljl
Has it been dropped along the way?

It's definitely a worthwhile search I think.

Tom.

[DQSD-Users] Error including Character Entities

2006-05-18 Thread Tom Corcoran
In the help section for the new uktvguide I am looking to include some
foreign symbols for some foreign tv stations listed as described in

http://www.chaos.org.uk/~eddy/bits/chars.html
such as Eacute;, oacute.

However when I load the .xml search it says an undeclared entity is
found. Is there a way of dealing with this?

Thanks, Tom.

Re: [DQSD-Users] Re: DQSD-Users digest, Vol 1 #838 - 7 msgs

2006-03-29 Thread Tom Corcoran

I could use a working Companies House search!

This session key stuff has come up in a number of searches I have been
working on. I think one needs to use ajax (xmlhttprequest) to first get
the url, however I have not been able to get a solution to work outside
IE and it looks like no one else has either as there have been no
replies to my previous post about this. It's fantastic stuff however and
if it's cracked will make dqsd so much more powerful.

James Robertson wrote:

could get the addition of a session key after a query
is posted, so the search is officially broken.

It might as well be deleted :(

Re: [DQSD-Users] establishing pattern for unique url per date

2006-03-14 Thread Tom Corcoran

Hi Shawn,

I have been playing with your code and learning about Ajax. It works
great for IE, but I have been trying to make it work for Firefox.

I replace your
var xmlHttp = new ActiveXObject(Microsoft.XmlHttp);
with
var xmlHttp = createRequestObject();

where :

function createRequestObject() {
 var request;
 try {
   request = new ActiveXObject(Msxml2.XMLHTTP);
 } catch(e) {
   try {
 request = new ActiveXObject(Microsoft.XMLHTTP);
   } catch(f) {
 request = null;
   }
 }
 if(!request  typeof XMLHttpRequest != undefined) {
   request = new XMLHttpRequest();
 }
 return request;
}

It still works with IE, but not with Firefox, watching with venkman it
gets to

 request = new XMLHttpRequest();

But when Open is called it fires the catch error handler. Have not been
able to figure this out yet. Any experience with doing this for Firefox?

Cheers, Tom.

[DQSD-Users] A more easily customisable search menu...

2006-02-20 Thread Tom Corcoran
As more and more searches get added I am concerned about the clutter on
my dqsd menu. When I am looking to remind myself what searched I have
forgotten about I do not want through though ones I will never use.
[Maybe memory should be a concern but since I got rid of the old machine
a few years ago I have not looked into performance gains by disabling a
bunch of the searches]

I know we can use the script generator
http://www.master-minds.net/cgi-bin/disablesearches.cgi
to disable scripts, and maybe that's enough but ideally would it not
good to have something more fluid?

Ok, I'll start throwing out an ideaeverything is built on the fly
from xml files so it might be hard to get something more ingrained. A
bunch of searches will not be used unless someone is interested in
accessing information for the USA, Australia, UK, etc. How about having
a country tag in the xml files if they are not generic? I know this
would mean touching a bunch of the xml files before the next release.,
but I think it might improve dqsd.

If you decided not to see the uk searches I do not know how this would
disable the relevant xml files, the only way of doing that seem to be
changing the extension (with the script generator). Could be entries in
localprefs.js to specify what country searches to see? That's not going
to stop them loading though is it

...maybe it would be just a matter of adding this country option to the
script generator page?

Or maybe it's just a matter of going though the xml files before the
next release and cleaning the categories up. If the search is country
specific, then add the country as the primary category...

Any thoughts?

Cheers, Tom.

Re: [DQSD-Users] need help with broken metacritic search

2006-01-30 Thread Tom Corcoran

Hi Kim,

New that one needed some new eyes!

I wonder why the wizard never picked up the new action, I redid it and all.

Thanks a lot, I missed that search.

Tom.

Kim Gräsman wrote:

Hi Tom,

I've fixed the search from the copy you posted.

There were a couple of problems:

- parseArgsEx expects the value argument to be first, before all switch
arguments, so crit /music Tom Waits would search the music category for an
empty string, since there's nothing between crit and /music.

- The URL was wrong -- they seem to have moved the post target from
search.metacritic.com/ to www.metacritic.com/

I cleaned up the form to contain as little as possible, while I was at it.

Will commit to CVS as soon as possible.

Cheers,
- Kim

[DQSD-Users] Faq additions

2006-01-16 Thread Tom Corcoran
Here is an addition for Known Issues (I've reproduced this 3 times on
different machines installed with XP Pro sp 2)

Q. When I add dqsd to a multiline taskbar it only shows on one line with
a grey readonly section underneath.
A. Download new_blue.zip from
http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detailaid=1102386group_id=42081atid=432066
BACKUP your theme_blue.css file and extract the zip into the same
folder. You'll need to use Configure Load Color Scheme Blue to
test it.

I suggest a new category for http://dqsd.net/faq.htm called Misc and
submit this addition

Q. How can I move DQSD from the default Quick Search Toolbar directory
in my Program Files location to another location of my choice?

A. There are a number of utilities available for use in moving programs,
these change all relevant references in the registry, etc. Possibly the
most robust is Application Mover (http://www.funduc.com/app_mover.htm),
which is shareware. This application also does the moving for you.
However it can be achieved using a freeware program called COA2,
downloadable from http://digilander.libero.it/rareware/coa2.zip. Once
the new location has been specified open a command prompt window in this
new location and type : regsvr32 DQSDTools.dll.

Re: [DQSD-Users] searches archive kept uptodate?

2006-01-13 Thread Tom Corcoran

Also, would it be possible to add the solution to get dqsd working
with a multi line taskbar to the faq.

Do you mean having a taskbar that is taller than the default single
line, and having the DQSD entry area extend over all the vertical
extent of the taskbar? If so, this works for me already... but I might
have misunderstood.

Yeah, my task bar is 1 lines thick and dqsd only shows on the top half
with a read only gray box showing below it. \o've had this problem
before on xp sp2 but sorted it and i think shawn hall had a message on
this topic, but I haven't found it yet. When I do I think it would be a
handy faq item.

Cheers, Tom.

[DQSD-Users] searches archive kept uptodate?

2006-01-12 Thread Tom Corcoran
Happy new year everyone. The years slip by and the list is quieter and
quieter but dqsd it still used all the time for me, even with firefox
extensions, which have replaced some of the searches used for me.

I am recovering from a recent burglary and theft of my laptop which
exposed huge holes in my backup system!

I was assuming http://www.dqsd.net/tools/dqsdtoc/searchtoc.pl was kept
uptodate with searches but when I went to look for ebayuk.xml it was not
there. I tracked it down in an old message *http://tinyurl.com/9z54f.
This ommission got me wondering if the searches list was kept updated as
people sent searches to the list, etc?

Also, would it be possible to add the solution to get dqsd working with
a multi line taskbar to the faq. I know Shawn figured out this before,
but I an still looking for the post, will likely find it soon...

I have also the steps required if one wants to move the location of dqsd
(keep my apps on a seperate drive), which might be faq item worth
including.

Cheers,

Tom.

Hi Dave,

Thanks a lot for this.

ebay was internationalised before

http://www.mail-archive.com/dqsd-users@lists.sourceforge.net/msg01972.h
but I guess that version was not maintained.

I now have a shortcut in localaliases.txt redirecting to your search :
ebay|ebayuk %s

Cheers, Tom.

Hi all,

Couldn't figure out how to get the existing eBay search to switch to
UK side, so did a conversion. It's useful primarily because it allows
people in the UK to use the /my switch and get their myEbay page
auctions in £GBP and times in BST/GMT by default.
