[Elecraft] K3 serial 584 is now OK
In case anyone is wondering, my K3 is running tickety-boo now that the KIO3 board has been replaced (thanks to Gary Surrency for diagnosis and the rest of Elecraft service folks who got me the replacement board tout suite!). And, uh, the 80-meter only decrease in sensitivity was most decidedly NOT condx or a failure of anything in the K3 box but a failure of the wetware which operated the box -- somehow, I know not how, I was using the non-existent RX ANT. Ooops. 73, Joe, W2RBA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3: Unable to update firmware by RS-232 port
Hi, all, hope someone can help! I have updated my K3 with just about all firmware that has come along since I put the rig together in March, 2008 (ser no 584) and never had trouble -- until now. The K3 Utility suddenly reported that no K3 communications are available. I've done some of the updates (the RXA board, CW Rise time, KIO3 Remote Module, LINE OUT and Speaker amplifier) and have had the rig on the workbench a few time looking for an obvious error I have made. To date, the error remains elusive. Anyone have an idea of what I should look for? Re: [Elecraft] K3: Unable to update firmware by RS-232 port
Hi, Matt, I'm not using a USB hub, my system used to work with a straight cable from a com port to the K3 or with the Elecraft/Prolific USB to rs-232 cable but no go, no matter which of four port I have. I also have checked for proper mating of the KIO3 but no go. It still confounds me why it worked for over a year and then stopped -- on three different computers! Thanks for your suggestions. Any others? :) 73, Joe, W2RBA Matt Zilmer wrote: Hi Joe, Did you make sure that it's opening the correct serial port? If you're using a USB hub, sometimes the COMx port id moves around. If this is the case, you'll have to sniff it out. If it's a REAL serial port, sorry. No clues here on that. You can set the COMx port from the K3 Utility, using one of the tabs. Also, make sure the digital part of the KIO3 is plugged in and properly aligned to the connector. Try another serial or USB cable too if you have them around. Re: [Elecraft] Knob shaft and pot issues
K3 #584 must have had the old audio pots which are fantastic -- they have a solid feel to them and coupled with the knobs (which sorta add to the old-timey flavor) it reminds me of knobs on my Drake 2B or an old Hallicrafters radio! If you forgot to do that, there was an interlock on the small hatch to cut the B+. We had two military operators (not hams) who handled the MARS traffic for us so we could ham. Somebody had discovered that the interlock was not working earlier in the day. I taped down the hatch, taped a note over that so the ops would have to remove the note to open the hatch, told the two ops to be absolutely sure they shut off the B+ before tuning the TX and left for home. Ah, yes, the B+ supply! Another stupid event I recall was when I was working on my Galaxy V MkII transceiver -- the transmitter section -- and didn't realize the B+ (ca 600 volts) was *always* switched on when the thing was even only receiving. I brushed against the loading capacitor (variable, natch) and, well, let's just say the scars on my palm are still visible. I really like the 12 volt solid state stuff. Re: [Elecraft] stupid question - likely ot
Ah, yes, what was the stupidest thing I ever did as a ham...lessee...there's so much to choose from. I'll start with the time when I built my first transmitter (a Lafayette KT-390 Starflite) from a kit and accidentally swapped the two different three prong terminal strips--one of which had a grounded center lug and the other of which didn't. When I fired 'er up, I was very pleased to note that it seemed to work fine but there seemed to be an oddity that I eventually (after many shocking experiences!) traced to the fact that it depended whether you put the two-prong AC line cord in one way or t'other. The engineer in me was careful (ha!) to usually plug it in the correct way but I wondered why they hadn't warned me about that in the manual...Well, come to find out, it *does* make a difference which type of three-pronged terminal strip goes where and that I had (you guessed it!) put the one that had the center lug grounded in the *AC input*. That's just the first one...then there was the time I got quite the shock from the B+ line on my college radio transmitter (I was the chief engineer -- we were great at using grandiose sounding titles just because they did so in the real radio -- oh, did I tell you I had earned a first class FCC radiotelephone license by then?) But I digress... They say that confession is good for the soul...
