Re: SLES Beta and HiperSockets ? - now MTU size question
Thanks everyone for you help, esp. Jeremy. I got a fix from Suse and now VM Guest LAN is working just fine. Question about MTU sizes, though. I let MFS default to 16k on the CP DEFINE LAN command. And so, in z/VM's MPROUTE CONFIG I specified an MTU size of 16384 and in Linux's /etc/rc.config I specified an MTU of 16384 as well. When I issue an ifconfig from linux, I see the MTU size is 8192. Linux under VM with OSPF Dynamic Routing.
Eric wrote: My network colleague would now like to know if anybody has experience of running Linux under VM with OSPF dynamic routing (GateD). If so, are there any pitfalls and cou you possibly provide some sample config files ? We run z/VM 4.2 with Guest Lan and let VM TCPIP do the OSPF routing (MPROUTE) (no RIP or static here). It works really well. The really nice thing is that once you've configured VM TCPIP OSPF routing, you don't need to do anything to it to add more Linux guests. They just join the lan and are routed to the network. Very cool. Let me know if you want more details. Mark has the basics of setting up Guest Lan on the HOWTO page of the linuxvm.org , but that example is static routing. Marcy Cortes Wells Fargo Services Co
Linux security questions
I have to find some answers to these questions for our security plan (why is that part always harder than the install). This is for SuSE 2.4.7 kernel. 1. How can I enforce a password to contain at least 1 numeric, 1 alpha, and 1 special character? 2. How can I lockout a userid after 3 bad attempts at password 3. How can I set a login to timeout if a valid userid/pwd is not entered within 2 minutes? Thanks in advance! Marcy Cortes VM Systems Programming Wells Fargo Services Company
Re: SAF in zVM V4R2 Express Installation
Well, I'll add my 2 cents. As a shop with VM in it for about 20 years, we don't want IBM to put a lot of effort into SAF and such. The first thing we do is pull out RACF and DIRMAINT and put it VM:Secure. We do appreciate the 1 page install sheet though because we tend to do a couple of installations of each release (GA and ESP). Sure makes it difficult when you have customers with completely different needs - which is why there are ISV's! I hope IBM focuses their development $ on making VM the best choice platform for Linux. I do think IBM should put some effort into making it easier for customers to get from one release to another. The install is only directed at a new system. What I'm talking about is what you have to do once you've got your new system up 2nd level and your old up 1st - how to put it into productions (I'm pretty sure IBM is looking at this;) We've gotten really good at it because we've done every release of VM/ESA and z/VM and we know our system intimately so we know where the hidden bear traps are, but I do notice a lot of people still on 2.3.0 and 2.4.0 and people skipping releases on the VMESA-L. If IBM is going to come out with 2 or 3 releases a year, a lot of people are going to fall eveb further behind more quickly. I was an IBM SE for a while in the early 90s. Remember VM/IS? That was supposed to make it all easy for the customers - anyone could be the sysprog. I had a customer call me in dire straits one day. They had a disk drive crash on a 9370 with 9332 dasd. I got there and found they had been doing nightly DDRs. No, problem, we'll just IPL the standalone and restore that tape. The first 50 or so blocks restored and that was it. There didn't appear to be anything after it on the tape. It turns out that a year ago the operator received an i/o error on a certain block and on someone's advice changed the dump all to dump 0-50 (or something like that). Anyway, that command was written down in ops guide forevermore. Reinstall time... Most of those VM/IS systems got replaced by something non-IBM. They couldn't upgrade from SP5 to 6 without an 80 hour service contract so they just didn't do it. They never got things like SFS that could have made life much easier. At some point, you have to take off the training wheels or you will crash on the banked turn on the bike path (yes, I have a 5 year old :). Being new to Linux myself I'm not sure, but I suspect the Linux gurus avoid using yast at some point too... Anyway, I would recommend checking out Share. Martha, Harry, and others have several presentations there geared toward VM newbies. And Lionel, maybe you can get your boss to send you across the bay to share in August! You can say it's Linux ed and not VM (that's what we have to do around here :). Check out the Nashville proceedings on www.share.org. Marcy Cortes Wells Fargo Services Company San Francisco

I've been trying to search through the archives, but it never comes back to me so I'll ask here (sorry, I'm sure this has been asked before). I'm trying to use LVM for the first time. SLES8 Install problem
I've gone through this install a few times now and I keep getting stuck at the part where it scans the CD for software selection. It comes back after about 35 min. and says Not enough disk spaces even for a minimal installation. My last attempt was with 69.6 MB SWAP and 2 full 3390-3 (2.2G each) Any ones else get through this? I did dasdfmt and fdasd the disks outside of YAST2 as indicated by the README file. dasdfmt -b 4096 -l lnxnnn -d cdl -v -p -f /dev/dasdx fdasd /dev/dasdx Any one else been through this? Re: SLES8 Install problem
Rob wrote: Any one else been through this? How much does it want? The README says 1.3G is sufficient for a 31-bit install. And you did select that formatted disk as the one to hold your / filesystem? You did not by mistake tell YaST to put all on your 60 MB swap disk? It comes back and says something like auto partition selection not possible, select them manually. So after the 40 min. scan of software I clicked on the partition link and selected SWAP on the small one and /usr on one of the others and / on another. I've tried so many combinations and have yet to find one that works. I may try it again without the swap disk - but I don't have much hope! Also, the AUTOINSTALL parm stuff is pretty cool- making these many attempts much easier, but I haven't been able to get it to pick up 3 parameters from the parm file: SAMBAUSER, SAMBAPASSWORD, and WORKDOMAIN. Maybe they are something different (they came from the readme not the install guide). We've got a support contract and I'm sending these questions to SuSE too, but I thought someone else might have already run into these things and could help me out faster! Now we've been asked to put together a list of what Linux on VM might need in terms of DASD. Our situation so far has been build it and they will come. They are starting to come (we have 13 or so Linux guests now) but don't have a grand scheme of replacing the world (yet :). So far, we're mainly doing apache and another app which uses mysql. where root can login from
On SLES 8, /etc/securetty contains ttyS0 but root is still allowed to login (via ssh port 22) (telnet server has been removed). We would like to disable root from being able to login anywhere but the console. su'ing to root is ok, but security doesn't want root to be able to logon. How do I do this in SLES 8. I accomplished it somehow in SLES 7, but can't seem to figure it out in 8. Thanks in advance! Marcy Cortes Wells Fargo Service Co

Re: Anyone tried Levanta
We're trialing it. We've recommended to the powers that be here that we purchase it. Now, Brad's just got get them to sign - the delays being mostly the organizational transitions going between mainframe and distributed groups than any thing else. We started with the 1.0 trial - did that in June. They came on site and we installed together (which was a great opportunity for us to pick up Linux skills from the experts). We have one instance running under 1.0 - we stopped with that because 2.0 was right around the corner. We're still getting 2.0 setup but so far so good. The product does look nice. We have eaten up our DASD farm by cloning the old fashion way (just DDR'ing, changing IPs/hostname, etc) and most of our staffs time (mainly me a little of another) just maintaining the instances (we have 15-20). We'd really need another FTE to keep going as we have been. Levanta will let you share all of the file systems and what's needed to be r/w is - invisibily to you through their MapFS. Very cool. So, each instance only needs enough extra space for it's unique things. So - I won't have to spend all my time making minidisks and doing copies. Our current method of creating instances makes it hard to keep the patches up to date and keep unique sets of RPMs on instances. Security here does not like extra sw to be installed - only what is needed - so creating a huge /usr with all packages is not a good plan either. I looking into sharing some of the stuff - it's not trivial - esp. when your a vm person primarily and linux secondarily :). With Levanta, you don't worry about any of that - it all happens automagically. Feel free to contact me if you have more questions. Oh, the folks there at Linuxcare are the best - fun to work with and very responsive (they helped me out today with reading cd's :). Marcy Cortes Wells Fargo Service Co
Re: Sharing /usr using VM
Or you could buy something - Levanta is one example. Marcy Cortes Wells Fargo Services Company Others have already explained that for simple sharing of minidisks, _all_ systems need to have the file system mounted read-only. I just wanted to point out that NFS, as well as [Open]GFS can be used if you need read-write access by any system. I believe AFS could be used in the same way.

I have noticed that the dasdfmt command isn't cooperating in SLES8. Where if I execute format at the VM layer all is well. Yeah, I've seen this before too. Let me guess: this is real, honest-to-goodness virgin disk, that nothing has ever touched before, right? For some reason, Linux won't touch it unless it finds some magic goodie on it that CMS formatting it gives it. I don't know if low-level CP formatting, or just Label formatting, would do the trick as well. I'd say it's a bug in the DASD driver or the dasdfmt utility, but I don't really know; the workaround, as you've found, is to touch all your disks with CMS first. I've seen that before too - I bet it works if you use the dasdfmt command like this: dasdfmt -b 4096 -v -p -f /dev/dasdh Marcy Cortes Wells Fargo Services Co

Here is the more exact finding our security group is concerned with: There are 2 recently discovered Linux Kernel vulnerabilities that could result in an attacker gaining elevated privileges on a Linux server. One involves exploiting the kernel function do_mremap()--insufficient bounds checking in the mremap system call; the other involves an exploit that allows an attacker to cause data stored in the kernel memory space to leak into user space via weaknesses in the real time clock (rtc) routines. IN both cases the vulnerability can be removed by upgrading the Linux kernel to version 2.2.24. Thanks! Eric Sammons

HP Openview Operations (OVO) - no agent for Linux 390
We use this product to monitor unix systems (and windows too I think). There is an agent for Linux on Intel, but none on 390 (and our request was rejected). I was wondering if other sites have a need for it or if there are alternatives that we should be looking at instead (not that I'm going to be able mandate a different product on the other thousands of systems to meet the needs of my little collection of linux 390 guests). Hi all - Let me begin by saying I am still very new to z/VM. I am a Linux guy, not a mainframe fellow, so bear with me if I ask silly questions. We are considering using one chunk of DASD space to install RHEL 3 and then having multiple guests access /usr, /bin, /sbin and so on read-only. That way we apply updated RPMs to the master all the read-only guests will be updated as well. The sticking point is that it seems that the read-only guests have to re-access the DASD before they see the updates that have been applied. Am I understanding this correctly? To me this sounds very problematical. In Linux/Intel, when a new RPM is installed, in most cases it simply involves restarting the updated service for the new software to be used. In z/Linux it seems that a simple update of code will require each guest to re-IPL in order to access the read-only DASD of the master image. Can someone clarify this for me? Re: Let Linux use Cyl 0?
Well, technically VM only cares if the volumes are attached to SYSTEM (uservol include in SYSTEM CONFIG). If you use DEDICATE to assign them to Linux guests, then VM shouldn't much care, unless one of your Linuxes decides to label them something like 440W01 or something then watch out for fun at next IPL time. Not that I would ever do it that way - I didn't even give cyl 0 to MVS when we ran that as guests. I would think the only reason you'd want to do it is if you have to at times run in an LPAR without VM. If there are symbolic links on the CD, then I would go with Knoppix. If there are not, then go ahead and use the Windows NFS server. Right, generate more. Change that ,03 to a higher number. I have 16, but I suspect you can go much higher. What's confusing is that VSWITCH RDEV wants a REAL device, so is it possible to generate more addresses for the real OSA? CP will drive them but use the VM TCPIP stack to initialize the devices. CP uses the *VSWITCH IUCV service to talk with the stack. The stack will issue the necessary CCWs to get the OSAs initialized. From that point on CP will drive the devices itself and the stack is out of the loop. So the answer is: use OSA devices not currently in use. Alan Altmark gave an extremely interesting and detailed presentation on just this issue at today's Hillgang meeting. WAS 5.1 install
Has anyone here every successfully installed Websphere AS 5.1 using the response file, not the graphical interface? It keeps telling me there is not enough space even though there is plenty. The graphical interface install liked the amount of space and happily installed it. I've got our ibm account team chasing it down, but I thought I'd ask you experts first. Wishing all these things didn't use X... It's not that I haven't figured out vncserver, etc; it's just that the security group here has a thing about putting X on production servers (or for that matter, more sw that what's needed to run the thing). Ah, thanks Richard - glad to see it wasn't just me. I had 1.4G free and it said it wanted 459M. Thanks for the command! I'll put it to use and pass that info on for the pmr. End of SCO?
Interesting article in eWeek: http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1569671,00.asp BayStar pulling its funding from SCO may be the end not just to SCO's anti-Linux litigation but to the company, says Linux Open Source Center Editor Steven Vaughan-Nichols. Re: REXEC revisited
My guess is that RESTRICTLOWPORTS, which is now the default in 4.4, is stopping you. Do you have the port assignments in your PROFILE TCPIP? REXECD on Linux with PAM and other goodies can be very sensitive. REXEC 4.4 IS working to some flavours of Linux I find out at last. The most important one to meis not under VM but standalone. I just wanted another way to do the job. I have alternatives, like seperate 4.3 stack instead of 4.4, sending REXEC out via z/OS etc. Thanks for your help Crispin Hugo Systems Programmer, Macro 4 http://www.macro4.com/ Macro 4 plc, The Orangery, Turners Hill Road, Worth, Crawley, RH10 4SS Direct Line: +44 (0)1293 872121 Switchboard: +44 (0) 1293 872000 Fax: +44 (0) 1293 872001 This message contains confidential information and is intended only for the individual named. This all sounds so simple that I wonder if something critical in your VM configuration didn't change when you went to z/VM 4.4. Perhaps the global DIRMAINT user profile changed to omit profile TCPPROF, or similar? I'd suggest you post this on a VM specialty list somewhere. I am able to run the REXEC client from my CMS guest right to the Linux guest running on the same VM LPAR. I have absolutely no idea what's required to make this work; but I just wanted to let you know that it *does* work on a properly configured z/VM 4.4 LPAR. One very reliable alternative I know of depends on the privilege class of the (ex-)rexec client, or its secondary user status relative to the Linux machine (assuming same VM LPAR). You could use CP SEND command text here if your sender has class C privilege. If your sender has class G, it needs to be SECUSER. If the client server are on different z/VM LPARs, I'm not sure how to handle this. Peace, --Jim-- James S.
