Thanks everyone for you help, esp. Jeremy. I got a fix from
Suse and now VM Guest LAN is working just fine.

Question about MTU sizes, though. I let MFS default to 16k
on the CP DEFINE LAN command. And so, in z/VM's MPROUTE CONFIG
I specified an MTU size of 16384 and in Linux's /etc/rc.config
I specified an MTU of 16384 as well. When I issue an
ifconfig from linux, I see the MTU size is 8192. Is that the max?
Should I go back and change the DEFINE LAN command and
the MPROUTE config to match?

We run z/VM 4.2 with Guest Lan and let VM TCPIP do the OSPF
routing (MPROUTE) (no RIP or static here). It works really
well. The really nice thing is that once you've configured
VM TCPIP OSPF routing, you don't need to do anything to it
to add more Linux guests. They just join the lan and are
routed to the network. Very cool.

Let me know if you want more details. Mark has the basics of
setting up Guest Lan on the HOWTO page of the linuxvm.org , but
that example is static routing.

Linux security questions

2002-05-02 Thread Marcy Cortes

I have to find some answers to these questions for our security
plan (why is that part always harder than the install). This is
for SuSE 2.4.7 kernel.

1. How can I enforce a password to contain at least 1
numeric, 1 alpha, and 1 special character?

2. How can I lockout a userid after 3 bad attempts at
   password

3. How can I set a login to timeout if a valid userid/pwd

Re: SAF in zVM V4R2 Express Installation

2002-05-15 Thread Marcy Cortes

Well, I'll add my 2 cents.

As a shop with VM in it for about 20 years, we don't want IBM
to put a lot of effort into SAF and such. The first thing we
do is pull out RACF and DIRMAINT and put it VM:Secure. We do
appreciate the 1 page install sheet though because we tend to
do a couple of installations of each release (GA and ESP).
Sure makes it difficult when you have customers with completely
different needs - which is why there are ISV's! I hope IBM focuses
their development $ on making VM the best choice platform
for Linux.

I do think IBM should put some effort into making it easier for
customers to get from one release to another. The install
is only directed at a new system. What I'm talking about is
what you have to do once you've got your new system up 2nd level
and your old up 1st - how to put it into productions (I'm
pretty sure IBM is looking at this;) We've gotten really good
at it because we've done every release of VM/ESA and z/VM
and we know our system intimately so we know where the hidden
bear traps are, but
I do notice a lot of people still on 2.3.0 and 2.4.0 and people
skipping releases on the VMESA-L. If IBM is going to come out
with 2 or 3 releases a year, a lot of people are going to fall
eveb further behind more quickly.

I was an IBM SE for a while in the early 90s. Remember VM/IS?
That was supposed to make it all easy for the customers - anyone
could be the sysprog. I had a customer call me in dire straits
one day. They had a disk drive crash on a 9370 with 9332 dasd.
I got there and found they had been doing nightly DDRs. No,
problem, we'll just IPL the standalone and restore that tape.
The first 50 or so blocks restored and that was it. There didn't
appear to be anything after it on the tape. It turns out that
a year ago the operator received an i/o error on a certain block
and on someone's advice changed the dump all to dump 0-50 (or
something like that). Anyway, that command was written down in
ops guide forevermore. Reinstall time...

Most of those VM/IS systems got replaced by something non-IBM.
They couldn't upgrade from SP5 to 6 without an 80 hour service
contract so they just didn't do it. They never got things like
SFS that could have made life much easier.

At some point, you have to take off the training wheels or you
will crash on the banked turn on the bike path (yes, I have a
5 year old :). Being new to Linux myself I'm not sure, but
I suspect the Linux gurus avoid using yast at some point too...

Anyway, I would recommend checking out Share. Martha, Harry, and
others have several presentations there geared toward VM newbies.
And Lionel, maybe you can get your boss to send you across the
bay to share in August! You can say it's Linux ed and not VM
(that's what we have to do around here :). Check out the
Nashville proceedings on www.share.org.

LVM question

2002-07-24 Thread Marcy Cortes

I've been trying to search through the archives, but it
never comes back to me so I'll ask here (sorry, I'm
sure this has been asked before).

I'm trying to use LVM for the first time. I'm running
SuSE 2.4 kernel. So I created my 2 minidisks,
dasdfmt 'd them, fdasd'd them, went into Yast and
chose the 2 disks and created a volume group called prod.

I rebooted and see these messages so I'm pretty sure
it exists:

Scanning for LVM volume groups...
LVM version 0.9.1_beta7 by Heinz Mauelshagen (10/04/2001)

vgscan -- /etc/lvmtab and /etc/lvmtab.d successfully created
vgscan -- WARNING: This program does not do a VGDA backup of your volume group

Activating LVM volume groups...
vgchange -- volume group prod successfully activated

Now, I suspect I need to mke2fs it, right? My question is
what is it called? The s/390 distributions redbook seems to
indicate that it might be /dev/prod/lvol1, but this doens't
work or seem to exist.

Can someone buy me a clue?

SLES8 Install problem

2003-01-27 Thread Marcy Cortes
I've gone through this install a few times now and I keep

My last attempt was with 69.6 MB SWAP and 2 full 3390-3 (2.2G

I did dasdfmt and fdasd the disks outside of YAST2 as indicated by the
README file.
   dasdfmt -b 4096 -l lnxnnn -d cdl -v -p -f /dev/dasdx
   fdasd /dev/dasdx

You did not by mistake tell YaST to put all on your 60 MB swap disk?

It comes back and says something like auto partition selection
not possible, select them manually. So after the 40 min. scan
of software I clicked on the partition link and selected
SWAP on the small one and /usr on one of the others and /
on another. I've tried so many combinations and have yet
to find one that works. I may try it again without the
swap disk - but I don't have much hope!

Also, the AUTOINSTALL parm stuff is pretty cool- making these
many attempts much easier, but I haven't been able to get it to
pick up 3 parameters from the parm file: SAMBAUSER, SAMBAPASSWORD,
and WORKDOMAIN. Maybe they are something different (they
came from the readme not the install guide).

We've got a support contract and I'm sending these questions

Inspect your CD's and check your console for errors (from samba,

I did 31-bit and it came to 56% of a 3338 cyl minidisk - which
works out to 1.28G or so, just what the doc indicated so I suspect

Scott, I tried and tried to get it to work. If you switch the

but I suspect it's something less. I haven't had time to report

I, like you, spent a lot of time messing with space issues that
really weren't. It seems that any error reading the CD is
reported as a not enough space issue. I think there's a lot of
room for error detection improvements in that process! In my
case, there were some samba errors on the console that should
have been caught instead of the install proceeding to tell me
my disk layout was bad.

Scott (or anyone), have you figured this out yet? I'm revisiting

addressed too).

Now we've been asked to put together a list of what Linux on VM might
need in terms of DASD. Our situation so far has been build it and
they will come. They are starting to come (we have 13 or so Linux
guests now) but don't have a grand scheme of replacing the world (yet :).
So far, we're mainly doing apache and another app which uses mysql.

So what would you ask for if you didn't know what you needed and
wanted to be prepared:) Our MVS environment has moved to all mod 9, mod 27,
and FICON. Are these well suited to Linux? How about remote copy
support (we do run our disaster recovery in house).

DIAG vs. ECKD question

2003-05-27 Thread Marcy Cortes
OK, I'm setting up our Sles 8 for cloning and am reading the
performance Redbook about DIAG vs. ECKD. It's pretty clear
that DIAG is a good thing for swap. How about for regular
disks? It doesn't seem like there is a clear answer in the
redbook. Any real world experience?

As an aside, if you are using the DIAG, you don't dasdfmt and
fdasd, right? Just mke2fs or mkreiserfs it I assume.

Re: Suse 8 TCP/IP timeouts during boot

2003-05-29 Thread Marcy Cortes
How do you setup guest lans if you want to use IP addresses for the
linux guests that are not private addresses? What I mean is if you
VM host is on 1.2.3.x subnet and you want the linux guests served by
the VM TCPIP to be on the same 1.2.3.x subnet, how is it done? I thought
the guest lans had to be on their own subnet.

Thanks in advance for any clarification you can give.

You don't! Yes, they do have to be their own subnet. That's
a good thing. The only hard part is convincing your network
folks to give you the subnet. But, it is well worth it!
In 4.2 or 4.3. Be sure and do dynamic routing too while you
are at it.

SLES 8 question - starting things

2003-05-29 Thread Marcy Cortes
I'm still trying to figure out where to place things that
used to be in the /etc/rc.config in SLES 7.

For instance, I want to start Mysql and SNMPD. In Sles 7
rc.config contained:
START_MYSQL = yes
START_SNMPD = yes

Where do I do this under SLES 8? (and where is this stuff documented???)

Thanks! I was beginning to feel like I was losing my mind. I thought
it would be much easier to customize SLES 8 given that at least
this time, I have a little more current Linux knowledge.

2 more things have me stumped:
- How can I allow root to logon at the console only (and I'd still
like to be able to su from an ssh putty session)
/etc/securetty didn't work
/etc/ssh/sshd_confPermitRootLogin NO didn't work either (worked
too well, couldn't su or login).

- Is it safe to modify /etc/powertweak/tweaks and put the
hz_timer = 0in it?? If not, where do I put this???

I've been all through those YaST panels - Still no clue as to how

The rpm -ql command showed me that ucdsnmp for example hit these

Re: Anyone tried Levanta

2003-09-10 Thread Marcy Cortes
We're trialing it. We've recommended to the powers that be here that we
purchase it. Now, Brad's just got get them to sign - the delays being
mostly the organizational transitions going between mainframe and
distributed groups than any thing else.

We started with the 1.0 trial - did that in June. They came on site
and we installed together (which was a great opportunity for us to
pick up Linux skills from the experts). We have one instance running
under 1.0 - we stopped with that because 2.0 was right around the
corner.

We're still getting 2.0 setup but so far so good. The product does
look nice. We have eaten up our DASD farm by cloning the old
fashion way (just DDR'ing, changing IPs/hostname, etc) and most
of our staffs time (mainly me a little of another) just maintaining
the instances (we have 15-20). We'd really need another FTE to keep
going as we have been.

Levanta will let you share all of the file systems and what's needed to
be r/w is - invisibily to you through their MapFS. Very cool.
So, each instance only needs enough extra space for it's unique
things. So - I won't have to spend all my time making minidisks
and doing copies.

Our current method of creating instances makes it hard to keep the
patches up to date and keep unique sets of RPMs on instances. Security
here does not like extra sw to be installed - only what is needed -
so creating a huge /usr with all packages is not a good plan either.
I looking into sharing some of the stuff - it's not trivial - esp. when
your a vm person primarily and linux secondarily :). With Levanta, you
don't worry about any of that - it all happens automagically.

Feel free to contact me if you have more questions.

Oh, the folks there at Linuxcare are the best - fun to work with and very
responsive (they helped me out today with reading cd's :).

Others have already explained that for simple sharing of
 minidisks, _all_
systems need to have the file system mounted read-only. I
 just wanted to
point out that NFS, as well as [Open]GFS can be used if you
 need read-write
access by any system. I believe AFS could be used in the same way.

Subject: [LINUX-390] How to recognize tape device on Linux booting.

Hi,
I have a question about tape.

I want to recognize a tape device on Linux booting.

I edit kernel parameters in /etc/zipl.conf

(before)
parameters=dasd=fd8f  root=/dev/dasda1

(after)
parameters=dasd=fd8f tape=fc91 root=/dev/dasda1

Then I run 'zipl',

# zipl
building bootmap: /boot/zipl/bootmap
adding Kernel Image : /boot/kernel/image located at 0x0001
adding Ramdisk : /boot/initrd located at 0x0080
adding Parmline : /boot/zipl/parmfile located at 0x1000
Bootloader for ECKD type devices with z/OS compatible layout installed.
Syncing disks
...done

Then I reboot Linux, tape module 'tape390' is not loaded and
/proc/tapedevices does not exist.
But tape address exist in /proc/subchannels.

I load tape module by 'insmod tape390 tape=fc91' by manual,
/proc/tapedevices is created.

Please teach me how to load tape module on booting.

I use SLES8+SP2 under z/VM 4.3.

Re: Adding DASD to a guest, going from zipl.conf to d asdfmt w/o a reboot

2003-11-12 Thread Marcy Cortes
I then execute the following dasdfmt command:

 dasdfmt -y -b 4096 -n 0206
dasdfmt: Unable to open device /dev/dasd/0206/device: No such file or
 directory

 0206(ECKD) at ( 94: 28) is dasdh : active at blocksize: 4096, 594000
 blocks, 2320 MB

Anyidea what is happening here? I have noticed that the dasdfmt
command isn't cooperating in SLES8. Where if I execute format at the
 VM layer all is well.

Yeah, I've seen this before too.

Let me guess: this is real, honest-to-goodness virgin disk, that nothing
has ever touched before, right?

For some reason, Linux won't touch it unless it finds some magic goodie on
it that CMS formatting it gives it. I don't know if low-level CP
formatting, or just Label formatting, would do the trick as well. I'd say
it's a bug in the DASD driver or the dasdfmt utility, but I don't really
know; the workaround, as you've found, is to touch all your disks with CMS
first.

I've seen that before too - I bet it works if you use the dasdfmt command
like this:

dasdfmt -b 4096 -v -p -f /dev/dasdh

Setuid programs on SLES 7 8

2004-01-05 Thread Marcy Cortes
Our security group wants us to turn off setuid for all programs or document
why it's there.

SLES 7 seems to have the following: mount ping umount at chage chfn chsh
crontab gpasswd rlogin rcp rsh sendmail traceroute

SLES 8 has all the above except for rcp rlogin rsh sendmail traceroute

Is everything going to fall apart if I change them? Or can anyone point out
why these programs need it so I can justify it to them? Thanks!

Here is the more exact finding our security group is concerned with:

There are 2 recently discovered Linux Kernel vulnerabilities that could
result in an attacker gaining elevated privileges on a Linux server. One
involves exploiting the kernel function do_mremap()--insufficient bounds
checking in the mremap system call; the other involves an exploit that
allows an attacker to cause data stored in the kernel memory space to leak
into user space via weaknesses in the real time clock (rtc) routines.

IN both cases the vulnerability can be removed by upgrading the Linux
kernel to version 2.2.24.

I wouldn't say that. What you would do is move to a server that is not part

same VM system (that's where we are now as we are just beginning to move

Got a head-scratcher that perhaps a lister can help me with here.

We installed a sandbox copy of SLES 8 as a VM guest. During
installation, there were no VM VDISK units (FBA) attached to the machine.
We added one for swap space, extended parmfile /etc/zipl.conf to include
the new address, hoping that the subchannel scanner would sense it during
IPL and insert the dasd_fba_mod module. No go. If I insmod dasd_fba_mod by
hand, all is fine; but shouldn't this be automatically sensed?

Or have I missed a script setting somewhere?

My production system did have VDISK units attached at installation time,
and they're automatically sensed quite beautifully after the ECKD units
get sensed and collected.

Any ideas?

SuSE doesn't offer maintenance anymore (directly). It is done thru
their Partners. So, you can talk to their partners and perhaps get a
 better deal.

My MP/3000 H30, no IFL, runs $4,500 a year. That is with a 10% govt
 discount.

You, on the other hand, may end up getting charged for each 390
processor on the box. Just because you created an LPAR and put only one
processor over there where you say you will run Linux only there...get
the drift. They will charge you for every processor you can run it on.
But a local business partner might be able to do something for you. Not
that I've heard of any arrangements, but one of the main reasons to
have local representation, is to make special arrangements.

For me, $4,500 is well worth it. I'm a consultant, and I would end up
charging a lot more to apply maintanance if I had to do it manually.
The Yast Online Update (YOU), is really neat, once it is set up.

Unless you need a Level 2 type support, the Linux390 listserv is much
 better at resolving basic problems.

Hi all -

Let me begin by saying I am still very new to z/VM. I am a Linux guy, not a
mainframe fellow, so bear with me if I ask silly questions.

We are considering using one chunk of DASD space to install RHEL 3 and then
having multiple guests access /usr, /bin, /sbin and so on read-only. That
way we apply updated RPMs to the master all the read-only guests will be
updated as well. The sticking point is that it seems that the read-only
guests have to re-access the DASD before they see the updates that have been
applied.

Am I understanding this correctly? To me this sounds very problematical.
In Linux/Intel, when a new RPM is installed, in most cases it simply
involves restarting the updated service for the new software to be used. In
z/Linux it seems that a simple update of code will require each guest to
re-IPL in order to access the read-only DASD of the master image.

Can someone clarify this for me?

Including how easy it is to move from one to the other? Load balancing? -
we have sysplex distributor on z/OS but would need something on zLinux

When I asked SuSE what happened to the ones they packaged with SLES 7 that

Re: Let Linux use Cyl 0?

2004-03-17 Thread Marcy Cortes
Well, technically VM only cares if the volumes are attached to SYSTEM
(uservol include in SYSTEM CONFIG). If you use DEDICATE to assign them to
Linux guests, then VM shouldn't much care, unless one of your Linuxes
decides to label them something like 440W01 or something then watch out for
fun at next IPL time. Not that I would ever do it that way - I didn't even
give cyl 0 to MVS when we ran that as guests. I would think the only
reason you'd want to do it is if you have to at times run in an LPAR without
VM.

I depends on how you've got it set up and what controls you have in place.
If you're using VM as a hypervisor for Linux, VM has to be able to know what
the volser of the DASD is. If your linux instances have root authority not
controlled by you and they take it in mind to do a dasdfmt on a full-pack
disk, including cylinder 0, and change the volser in doing so, then the next
time VM is IPLed, that pack might not be found and the linux instance won't
come up because the directory won't match the volser.

I do not think you should let anything other than VM itself use cyl 0.
As this is where VM keeps Vol id, disk map info, etc. $ALLOC$ is what
is some times called a place holder. The userid $ALLOC$ doesn't
actually do anything with it other than mark it or inform others that
this cylinder is occupied. I also set up a $EOV$ on each volume on
the last cylinder to help with keeping track of gaps that DISKMAP will
 show. Steve Gentry

Should I be letting Linux instances, under z/VM, utilize Cylinder 0?
Currently I allocate Cylinder 0 to $ALLOC$ and the rest of the volume
 to the Linux image.
I CPFMTXA cylinder 0 in VM and give it a VOLSER. Then, I access the
 devices
under Linux and dasdfmt them, and partition them using fdasd.

Until I get FCP and an ESS setup to allocate larger volumes, I will be
using LVM for the larger file systems. I am planning to take full
volumes of 3390-3 DASD and create Logical volume groups from them. I
can split the devices between 4 FICON channels and 2 Controllers.

 Any recommendations?

Hi,

Has anyone else installed this product, and if so, did it run OK? One of
our developers said he installed this today, and they said it used a huge
amount of our VM cpu. I need to check with the developer to see which
version he installed, but the development team is now concerned that z/VM is
not the place to run linux.

If they were just running the server side of the product, and they only have
2 or 3 clients connecting, then I would think the CPU usage should have been
low. Any tunning hints?

Because of the timing of a meeting with IBM and SuSE and our own

gb
linux lpar, a 1 gb linux lpar and my 768 mb twiddling LPAR.
Then things happened and a schedule for IBM to come in and do a bunch of

last week I'd have been able to crate an almost 4 GB lpar under which to
run VM., as it stands, untl the end of May, I am stuck with 2 GB.

Is that enough for VM and a handful of virtual penguins?

Re: logout script from vm

2004-04-05 Thread Marcy Cortes
Neale and Adam both just (simultaneously! in stereo!) recommended
'CP SIGNAL SHUTDOWN', which is probably the best way.

It can be actually even easier than that if you enable the signals in the
SYSTEM CONFIG something like this:

Set shutdowntime 30 /* system default - this is for VM */
Set Signal SHutdowntime 300 /* for guests to shutdown - deflt 0 */

Then you don't have to do a thing! Just shutdown VM - or even deativate the
LPAR!

Marcy (who still thinks the SYSTEM CONFIG ought to have that in there by
default :)

Essentially that would be what you do. I only question the use of a Windows

If you're not allowed to permanently install Linux on an Intel system, would
it be bending the rules too much to use a Knoppix live CD to boot into

shut down, and reboot back into Windows without ever having touched the hard

The VSWITCH OSA devices are attached to no one. CP will drive them but use
the VM TCPIP stack to initialize the devices. CP uses the *VSWITCH IUCV
service to talk with the stack. The stack will issue the necessary CCWs to
get the OSAs initialized. From that point on CP will drive the devices
itself and the stack is out of the loop.

So the answer is: use OSA devices not currently in use.

Alan Altmark gave an extremely interesting and detailed presentation on just

 Crispin,

From your description, you're counting on the CMS guest to be able to
execute the name resolver, then open a socket to the Linux
 rexecd host.
This all sounds so simple that I wonder if something critical in your
VM configuration didn't change when you went to z/VM 4.4. Perhaps the
global DIRMAINT user profile changed to omit profile TCPPROF,
 or similar?

I'd suggest you post this on a VM specialty list somewhere. I
 am able to
run the REXEC client from my CMS guest right to the Linux
 guest running
on the same VM LPAR. I have absolutely no idea what's required to make
this work; but I just wanted to let you know that it *does* work on a
 properly configured z/VM 4.4 LPAR.

One very reliable alternative I know of depends on the privilege class
of the (ex-)rexec client, or its secondary user status relative to the
Linux machine (assuming same VM LPAR). You could use CP SEND command
text here if your sender has class C privilege. If your
 sender has class
G, it needs to be SECUSER. If the client server are on
 different z/VM
LPARs, I'm not sure how to handle this.
