I found the problem to be a stuck check valve in the old filter housing. The filter had been removed and apparently this allowed the check valve to come loose and block the outlet. I think if you look carefully in the filter housing you will see that this is the problem. I sold a 1954 Safari to a gentleman from Belgium. He arranged for the shipping from Jacksonville, FL to Antwerp. There were two options for transporting the trailer by ship. The first was to have the trailer placed into an open top shipping container. This type of transportation had the drawbacks of 1) The trailer width would barely fit in the container. 2) This tight fit could result in damage during transport. 3) The containers are stacked above deck on the ship. This could leave it open to the elements. Remember the container has an open top. And containers do fall overboard. The second option is called 'rollon-rolloff' or RORO to use the shipping term. This is how they ship cars. The ship is designed with many, many levels below deck. All cargo is below deck on a RORO ship. This method costs more than the container method. However I would assume the risk of damage is much less. When I dropped the Safari at the Port of Jacksonville there were many boats on trailers waiting to be loaded. So it appears to be a popular method of shipping towable items. The other thing to check is to be sure that the serial number on the trailer and the title match. If they do not it could be a little tricky getting it through customs on the other side. Be sure to have accurate supporting documentation. The shipping of this trailer was coordinated through a broker in New Jersey. I am not sure what you look under in the yellow pages. - Mike Thornton Russ Welch wrote: > I know this has been mentioned, but has anyone shipped their airstream > overseas ? I have used these in residential application and am not aware of any reason they should not be used in an airstream. Certainly would seem easier to simply replace the circuit breaker in the panel rather than use the process you describe here. From: "Dr. Gerald N. Johnson, electrical engineer" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: GFCI It will require taking some wiring apart. First you need to identify all the receptacles on a circuit. Probably by having that circuit being the only breaker on and test all receptacles for power (night lights in quantity would make that quick). Then it gets messier. You have to guess which receptacle on that circuit is closer to the panel and (with power off) pull that receptacle and separate the two black wires from the receptacle (providing it has two). It would be good to check that there's only three load cables leaving the electrical box and that there are no paralleled circuits on breakers. Then with the two black wires separated you need to find out with power back on if you killed all the receptacles on that circuit, then with test meter or light find which black wire is the one from the panel. When you've identified that first receptacle, you can drop in the GFI and attack the other receptacle circuit. The receptacles in my '68 Caravel are similar. Very few receptacles in the trailer. I plan on adding one or two under the dinette and those will be my GFCI for other circuits. One major complication in the '68 Airstream. All the wiring is aluminum and I don't know of any GFI rated for aluminum wires. I figure on trying to run new copper in my '68 Caravel some day. In the '68 owner's manual there is a kind of a wiring diagram that may indicate the true paths of the wires from panel to receptacles. Have you checked that diagram? Well we had our first big rain last night so I went to check the trailer for leaks. I found two. One of the windows I replaced, and one of the vent stacks in the rear. I still have to check the vent. Tonight, I checked the windows. The alcoa gutter seal had turned a green shade.... yuck! It had also shrivled up not providing a good seal. So I spent a good half hour scraping it all off. I tried to make a neat bead with vulkem. I got it into the grooves then spread it with a paper towel. This got it into the grooves over the wrap windows nicley but it smeared about a half inch on the sides where I don't need it. Is there a way to clean the vulkem off the areas I don't want it, but leaving it where I want it? -Tim [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.telecom-pros.com/tim/tim eFax (508) 590-0302 ------------------------------ Message Number: 7 Date: Tue, 25 Sep 2001 20:50:58 -0500 From: "Dr. Gerald N. Might encourage someone else. 1) New "Pergo-like" flooring for the front and galley areas. Ditto to all that Jim Green wrote; same installation process. (rip out carpet, pull up tiles, sand/scrape, epoxy & filler. One additional step: I cut 3/8" plywood and screwed down as underlaymenfor the new flooring. Glad I did, it made laying the new flooring really clean and easy.) Sales people recommended the non-glue option for a seasonal cabin-type application subject to large temperature and humidity variations. Installation is straightforward. The floor looks great and did not budge during our several hundred mile test run. We will see what a full seasonal change does, but thus far I highly recommend this stuff. 25 year warranty. 2) 4 new tires. ST 7.00 X 15" tires were readily available at my neighborhood Pomp's tire service. What a pleasant surprise. I recall that some on the list have had problems finding these. $302 all inclusive; mounted, balanced, installed, taxes, and olcarcasses disposed of. 3) 2 new 34" X 74" custom made mattresses for the mid-twin beds. Built right in my neighborhood Verlo mattress factory. Called them on Wednesday; they were ready to pick up on the following Monday. These are quality innerspring mattresses, not foam sheeVery comfortable. Again, $300 covered the bill. 4) Minor--I replaced the 2 front wall lights whose ball&socket had come permanently out of joint. Now have 2 nice brass wall sconces with frosted glass globes. These were 120vac fixtures but it was very simple to gut them and replace the bulb socket witthe ones from the 12vdc fixtures they replaced. I wrapped the base of the globe, which sits down in the fixture, with 1/4" foam weatherstrip material; it's invisible, and lets them ride in-place without fear of breakage. Under $30 total for 2. I am thankful all over again every time I do a wiring project and see the copper wires. Must have been after 1966 when the aluminum wire brainstorm blew through. That's it for this year's projects. Next year will probably be 2 Fantastic roof fans. Last year it was new carpet and bathroom vanity. The fun never stops. ------------------------------ Message Number: 10 Date: Tue, 25 Sep 2001 23:34:08 -0400 From: "Richard P. When not hooked to that exterior power source, the trailer may be grounded by the jack or stabilizing jacks, though poorly. I think in either case the trailer shell will carry most of the lightning current and protect the occupants as if they were in an all metal car. Touching the interior metal surfaces at the time of a lightning string might cause some energy to be passed through the body. Lightning currents can be very large and the body is very sensitive so isolation is best. E.g. don't touch the shell when lightning hits. Gerald J. -- Entire content copyright Dr. Gerald N. Johnson. Its definitely sticky stuff before its cured and after its sturdy. It might be stronger than the paint adhesion to the wood. But its stretchy. The manufacturer's name is Tremco. Caulk drying in the tip is a problem and Vulkem is stronger than most. I let a bit of Vulkem run out and then capped the tip with a wire nut. That didn't work. Its cured solid in the tip. I guess there's where the alternate tool, e.g. the syringe comes in. Or: Do the whole job the same day/week then ignore storage. Gerald J. -- Entire content copyright Dr. Gerald N. Johnson.
