I think that one can save money by building a PC but only when you want a
high end unit, and maybe even not then. There are pros and cons. The pros
are that you know what individual components you are getting and
theoretically you have more information about those components. A factory
built machine may have some good stuff and some junk. Your stuck with the
components that come with the machine. Of course some on line companies will
build a box for you.

One important con is if you are not a good troublshooter and you have
problems, you may not know which component is at fault. One way to deal with
this is to buy the box you want, the PS you want and assemble them. Then
move the components from your working PC to the new box. You will know right
away whether the box and PS are OK. [not much to do wrong with a box [case].
I like a large case with lots of room.

Then you can add things one or a few at a time. For example you can replace
the motherboard and ram. If your new mobo is bleeding edge you probably will
need to replace the ram, unless the board will handle more than one type.
One difficult part of home brew is knowing whether your components are
compatible. Your old hard drive will probably work with the new mobo. And if
it is large enough, is 7200 ROM and has a decent amount of cash, you can
probably stay with it for quite awhile. The same is so with your CD drive
and or burner. I would go for a DVD/CD burner and a DVD player, which should
also play CDs.
