Sure, but look at the advances Tesla has made, by themselves, in just a few years. That's one company, with a lot of hurdles to overcome, that have come through with a lot of advancements that were believed to be decades away not too long ago.

I have a lot of respect for people like Elon Musk, who don't sit around arguing why things are impossible or too hard. I wouldn't buy a Tesla today, but I give them a massive amount of credit for trying to do something, even with all the ongoing naysayers. There's way too much of that going on in all kinds of industries because it's easier to just stick to the status quo. Look at Palmer Luckey - this kid was banging together VR goggles in his bedroom, and everyone said the kind of virtual reality goggles that are now shipping were impossible to make just a couple of years ago. Now that he pushed it forward and figured it out, HTC is making a headset, Sony is making a headset..

Those are the kinds of people I have a lot of respect for. Just get up and try doing something, even if everyone keeps saying it won't work.

And which type of vehicle is best in a post-apocalyptic world? I don’t see electric vehicles in Mad Max movies (except for the guitar guy who obviously has some form of electric power available). The best solution would seem to be the Mr. Fusion powered DeLorean from Back to the Future. We will never run out of garbage.

I would imagine that if we were designing cars from scratch today, using a combustion engine definitely wouldn't be the choice. I can imagine the outcry if the infrastructure plan for new vehicles was to ship explosive fuel all around the country, to power vehicles that will emit huge amounts of pollution versus having charging stations everywhere.

I honestly wouldn't get in line for one today. Tesla has never been "on time", but they make decent cars when they cost around $100 grand. When they're "giving them away" for $35,000, it may be a whole new ballgame.

But the arguments for an electric car are getting better day by day. In 18 months or so, they may tip over to the point of working for a majority of buyers. I can wait until then to see how it works out.

Coal? Mine is mostly nuclear. I'd imagine for others it may be
    mostly hydro.

You still have most of those hassles with electric. You
still have them all if you're not at a free charging
            location.

Time it. You will be surprised. 5 minutes. Gotta drive
in, park, get out, gas cap off, swipe card, wait for
authentication, select fuel, wait for beep, put hose
in, pull trigger. Wait a couple of minutes, reverse all
of the above, stand in rain, snow gas fumes, noise.
From the moment you leave the street to being back on
            the street 5 minutes.
            And it costs you money!
            I charge with solar.

We drive past gas stations every day. It's what, 2
            minutes?

If you travel >200 miles your time table is screwed as
you need to charge. Your route also can't be the
            scenic one.

It costs more than my current car which I have today
and I doubt it comes close in terms of comfort.

Oh and the auto pilot doesn't try to hit oncoming
            traffic. That's a nice upside!

Even if it were 5 seconds that would be more time
every two weeks than what I spend at a gas
station. Then I have to pay for power anyway...
