Maybe I should have said, The Bears are to Chicagoas the ________are to Foxboro
(New England). A metaphor is based on a similarity of abstraction(s). A
metaphor does not have to be visual. A metaphor is intended to provide some
information (such as a partial explanation) about the target object. The
problem with text-based AI as it stands today is that most explanation cannot
be conveyed by text except for some special (and usually specially designed)
classes of kinds of information. An AGI program would have to be capable of
greater 'understanding' then contemporary AI programs. To suggest that an
advanced text-based AGI program would not be workable because concepts have to
be conveyed by the way of image-based metaphors is to completely misunderstand
the problem as it stands today. That is part of the reason I tried to explain
some of the characteristics that would be necessary for AGI. Now I just made a
statement:"To suggest that an advanced text-based AGI program would not be
workable because concepts have to be conveyed by the way of image-based
metaphors is to completely misunderstand the problem as it stands today. I need
to provide some reason or explanation of why I believe that. I started to do
that when I explained that contemporary AI programs cannot 'understand' text
very well. But is that a problem due to the heavy use of visual metaphors, or
do you think that there are other problems. I think that the problem of
getting AI to 'understand' is a problem that has permeated all the various
kinds of AI paradigms. To believe that visualization would solve the problem
of 'understanding' text is something that has been tried and it hasn't worked
much better than other means. So I just do not think that visual Input is
necessary for AGI, that the core problem -as it stands today- is an abstract
programming problem that requires IO (but not necessarily multi-modal sensory
systems, visual systems, so on.)jim Bromer

In reference to my summary (where I said I was going to create a text-based AGI
program) Andi did say that metaphors were the reason text would be inadequate
or something like, that but he did not actually take the next step to provide a
reason to backup or explain this.

A metaphor is a form of reasoning by similarity. The term 'analogous
reasoning', might suggest a more abstract form of reasoning by similarity. I
believe that certain IQ tests use analogous knowledge to test if the person has
integrated similar cultural knowledge appropriately.

The Bears are to Chicago
As the ________ are to Boston.

A lamb is to a sheep
As a ___ is to a tiger.

A metaphor then might originally be an example of purposeful analogy. For
example, "That lamb pounced on me like a tiger ___"

So for a fresh metaphor to be understandable it probably has a reason for its
use. Of course, archaic metaphors, like the past tense of the verb 'go' are
mostly lost to people who aren't familiar with old English texts.
