The hardware and packaging may be authentic, but you may have bought a
phone whose Android code was modified and reflashed.  Any person
making the modifications before 1.1 came out wouldn't have been able
to test their changes under 1.1, and so they could be incompatible --
especially if the modifications used undocumented APIs.

All hypothetical, obviously, but it would be consistent.
