I've run some tests with a G1 and a Nokia N81, and the signal strength from the G1 noticeably lower than the N81 (in both reported "bars" and voice dropouts during a call), so I'd say the G1 doesn't have very good reception. Now whether it's software or hardware at fault is something I can't determine.
As for the test details, I tried my T-Mobile SIM and my SIM from another carrier. The alternative carriers SIM reported maximum bars and good call quality both devices, which to me indicated that the G1s transceiver doesn't have a fundamental problem. The T-Mobile SIM reported 1 bar with occasional 2 bar and 0 bar blips on the G1, and 3 bars with 4 bar and 2 bar blips on the N81 (but no total signal dropouts on the N81). I do experience connection errors using the T-Mobile SIM in the G1 (both in the browser and using Market), so I know that when the G1 says it has 0 bars, it really has lost it's connection to the T-Mobile network. Al. P.S. If you're wondering why I didn't use my SE c702 as well, it's because it's network locked to the carrier who I get good signal with.
