I think this is a highly unlikely scenario and even if it happened, I think
the volume of legitimate reviews would keep things in check (eventually).
And if not, these two developers will probably lose more money buying
reviews then they're pulling in. I think the whole concept of buying reviews
is absurd and simply not sustainable.

You might be able to boost yourself up or hurt your competitor(s), but
realistically only temporarily.

Hmm ... I wonder if anyone here has tried this and would be willing to share
their experience ... that would be interesting.

I disagree. I really think you're placing way too much weight on the last
three ratings. Especially if you have a free / trial version of your app
where people can judge for themselves. I also find that most negative
comments are fairly quickly countered by reasonable people - especially if
the comments are blatantly incorrect.

If you keep doing what you're doing (frequently updating and improving your
app), any bad reviews bought against you will eventually get buried by good
reviews.

And similarly if your app is crap and it stays that way, any good reviews
you buy yourself will get buried (probably faster than the first case).
