... and I agree with it more than with the classical notion of
customer as a paying entity.

Let's face it: app stores are big businesses based heavily on
providing 'free' stuff.

If you extend the horizon, free apps usually have advertisements,
which are genuine revenue streams, so loosing free customers
translates to loss of revenue. Loss of reputation has measurable
impact to an individual or business too.

And lastly one could use free app to cross-sell the paid version.
