All 2x4s start out as two by four. In the old days they were left
rough sawn, today they are smoothed down to their finished size, but
are still called by their nominal dimensions. All finished lumber is
smaller than the size it is called. This is not a scam or a deception.
It is just the reality of the lumber milling process.

Good grief! Aren't there enough conspiracy theories around without
adding lumber to the list?

The size of all lumber -- and timber -- has always been the "rough
cut" size; the house I grew up in had 2x4's in the walls that were 2"x4"
... rough cut. If you've ever worked with rough cut lumber, you'd know
that it is not just hard on the hands and the clothing -- you often
can't see faults or flaws in the lumber because the rough cut "splinter
fuzz" hides them.

Since industry standard is rough cut dimensions, all planed lumber
and timber is "smaller" than the designated size ... you can't take the
surface off of anything without making that thing smaller. Since
builders want planed lumber -- easier on hands, easier to handle in all
ways, easier to see knot holes and splits and other flaws -- the lumber
we buy is going to be smaller than 2"x4" ... but it is NOT a scam, or a
rip-off or a conspiracy. It's a way to avoid splinters and splits.

 You are mistaken.
I do not live next to it.... I live right in IWWTFWA. ;-)

It's worse than that when using Pegasus Mail (DOS, of course). I've
had 2 of those messages that you click, click, etc. and finally they
crashed my computer causing a spontaneous reboot. I did not EVEN try
to read them with Insight, I just sent them to the cosmic bitbucket
where they belong.

Subject: Arachne locks up when searching source

Hello:

I have just found a new problem that I have never encountered before.

I wonder if any others get the same result.

Go to http://www.tomshardware.com

The page should download and be displayed just fine, images and all.

BTW, I found that several links on the page work OK too.

Do F6 to view source on the main page.

Next do F7 to search the source for a word or phrase. (The word I was
searching for was "java". I don't think it would have mattered whatever
word I was searching for).

In two attempts at trying this Arachne locked up on me. There was no
way out of this one other than a cold reboot.

New bug?

Sam Heywood

Subject: Re: PCI hardware modem in DOS

- ---(begin quote)
I have, the one on this machine, though I am using it in Linux at
the moment. My modem is an Actiontec PCI call-waiting modem and
the machine dual-boots DR-DOS and Mandrake Linux. The modem is
currently on IRQ 11 and IOPORT 0xdc00. Works fine with the CHAT
program from DOSPPPD, and thus with Arachne.

I set up the IRQ by hand in the BIOS (no plug-n-pray operating
system, blah blah blah). The modem comes with a DOS utility that
tells me what IRQ, IOPORT it is using. I don't know if this will
work with other modems. Ralf Brown has a utility that might help
to find out where the modem is:

http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~ralf/files.html

Then you just specify "non-standart" modem in Arache modem
wizard, and put in the appropriate values for IRQ and IOPORT.

I heard about the Actiontec PCI hardware modem, said to work with DOS, OS/2,
and Linux as well as Windows. I suppose, once you know the IRQ and IOPORT,
setting it up for DOSPPPD is just like setting up my ISA Diamond SupraExpress
56i, at COM4 (base 0x2e8) IRQ 5? In Linux I used a setserial statement to make
Linux find the modem.

You don't really need the Arachne modem wizard. I have DOSPPPD set up to dial
without Arachne. Then I can run Arachne with Connection READY, Hangup NUL, or
other Internet program that uses DOS packet driver.

Ralf Brown also wrote a DOS communications program that I downloaded and
unzipped but am having a hard time finding a use for it, considering the
Internet has superseded BBSes.

How do you like Mandrake Linux?

What is HTH? Another acronym that has me floored? Here's To Health?

To Thomas/tomstfor:

Is Norton Utilities free for download? I thought it was commercial software.
Or do they no longer market the DOS version?

Subject: SLIP/PPP Connection Problem

Second Post....

I try my W3.1 Shiva Dialer, and it does the same thing as Miniterm,
except it pops up an "AUTHENTICATION" dialogbox, with my UserName
already entered in one line, and the cursor in the "PASSWORD" line.
I enter my password and click OK...it pops the same authentication
dialogbox up...I enter my password and click OK...and...and..after
doing this 3-4 times, it drops the connection and says, "verification
failed because username and/or password failed"

I try my OS/2 DialupClient, which gives me a little STATUS window, to
see what is going on with the progress....everything goes the same as
with Miniterm or Shiva, BUT, at the very last, it gives the error as
"PAP Authentication failed".

SO, ....ideas....???

Subject: SLIP/PPP Connect Problem

I recently acquired another ISP account.

They state that they do NOT support anything except Win9x/ME/NT, etc,
and MacOS.

They used to support Win3.1, but have now stopped doing that...

They usually supply their new accounts with a CD to install/configure
the connection, through Windows or Mac. They will/do supply new
accounts with a printout of connect information, DNS, Netmask, Username,
Passowrd, all the goodies that my other ISPs supply, which I use to
setup up Miniterm, W3.1 Shiva, OS/2 DialupClient, etc....

I use an external 56K Modem, with speaker turned on, and all the
usual string of 8 LEDs on the front, so I can see exactly what is
going on (I guess I'm just a control freak...:))))...

When I set up Miniterm/Arachne to dial into them, I get the usual
speed-negotiation screeching, then it settles down at 33.6 (where I
have my modem set most of the time) and sets up the connection (with
4 LEDs steady lit) and the SEND and RECEIVE leds blinking as it
negotiates the PPP connection. After about 1 1/2 times as long as
normal, it rejects the connection, and Miniterm gives me the "PPP
Link down...packet driver not installed" notice.

When I go to a "Use Terminal" screen, the same thing happens, as soon
as I press F7....BUT

If I let it drop down to the SLIP login, I can enter my Username and
Password manually, and it will let me log on.....
there I find it is a SunOS 5.5.1, with a standard prompt of:

sun: %

>From there, I can type help and get a list of things I can do, even
includes firing up Lynx to surf the web...and ftp, and telnet, etc.

BUT...I can not seem to get it to accept my packet Driver login for
love or money...

Before I jump all over them....I want to hear your thoughts, advice,
and comments...thanks..

......gregy

Hello!

Go to Arachne Desktop, select "Options" then "<<TCP/IP Setup" (in the lower
part of the page) then "Internal PPP support". Fill in the " PAP/CHAP
username" and "PAP/CHAP password" with your account's username and
password. Review your IP, DNS and modem settings. Most important: Clear
(uncheck) the "Show terminal window" box and the "Login script - try
following dialogue" one. The terminal window should not show up any more.
Go to the bottom of the page, laugh at Bill Gates and save your
configuration. This should solve your problem.
