Howard,
What a virus can, or cannot do, depends how the virus is designed.
However, if you never RUN an attachment, the only thing that will happen
is nothing.
With Arachne, and other browsers if one does as one should and learns
how to run software safely, you can save an attached file and check it
out for viruses before you go any further. You find a virus, you delete
the file and mail a bomb back to the idiot that sent it to you ... or
*feel* like doing so, at least.
Some Dozerware "viruses" like the 27 gigamegatrillitons of different
brands of Hybris, are so simple to spot you don't even need to have
virus check software ... you can just view the file and know it's
Hybris. <G> If you keep it [me, keep a virus???] be careful; if you're
not feeling masochistic, delete and have no fear.

Hi Curtis;
Well, I haven't made exhaustive tests, but I got my Arachne dialing with
LSPPP and working. There are a couple of complications, depending on your
sensitivities. I don't like to see unnecessary crap on the screen so I
re-direct that stuff to a file or nul. I couldn't manage to keep the
screen clear with the required full command line so I had to put some
of it in the environment. There will be those that say PUT IT ALL THERE.
I don't like to waste memory, so I won't.
Anyway, with NO change to the "Connection" line from previously advised,
here is my new Dialer line: (all on one line)
Dialer @EPPPD.exe /b:03e8 /i:4 /B:57600 /M:AT&fL1W2\V1
/d:9055408968 >>PPP.LOG
Remember that *MY* LSPPP has been renamed to EPPPD for dumb Arachne 1.62.
Now it gets complicated. I don't use a terminal login, and my username
and password get transferred under PPP. (No script) That means that
LSPPP needs the name and password *NOW*, not later when Arachne tries
to execute the "Connection" line. If the proper password isn't available
right now, LSPPP will use its default (?nothing?) and will fail - exiting
with an error and Arachne will re-try. :((
If I stick the /N:stuff + /U:stuff +/P:stuff on the line above before the
redirection symbols, the login works but the re-direction doesn't.
That was LSPPP v0.72. So I have to waste some environment memory on that
stuff like this: SET LSPPP=/N:199.212.94.65 /U:caverge /P:****** /V:60
You can put that line in your Autoexec.bat.
Note I call LSPPP by its proper name because IT doesn't know it has been
renamed. <G>
The above will not work for you if you need a terminal login. (script)
I won't include the details of the required changes here because we
might be lucky.
That's it for now, read LSPPP.doc to get some better idea of what I've
done, and let us know which Arachne and LSPPP versions you are dealing
with if it doesn't work.

P.S. Note that LSPPP is *CASE SENSITIVE* to command characters.

Subject: SLIP/PPP ConnectProblem - Solved
The new ISP account is up and running fine. For your information,
and ForWhatIt'sWorth, I found out the following:
1. It is NOT a problem with MS-CHAP. MS-CHAP is a fairly restricted
protocol, used primarily on Windows VirtualPrivateNetworks. And,
it will almost surely NEVER be encountered by any one of us trying
to connect to a pay-dialup-ISP. So, I have to apologize for jumping
to conclusions about "Microsoft buggered up the PAP/CHAP protocol"
- in this case they are NOT guilty.
The applicable RFCs are 1334, 1994, 2433, and 2759. Anyone interested
can do a Google-FeelLucky search (with quotes) for "RFC xxxx" and it
will bring the page right up. Personally, I have learned more about
PAP/CHAP than I ever hoped to learn, or than I ever WANTED to learn.

2. The problem was identified by my normal ISP Owner, and confirmed
by checking the login script after the newISP's installation software
was run. That this problem MAY be encountered by one of us in the
future is a distinct possibility. My normal ISPOwner tells me that
they (my normal ISP) had their servers set up to do it this way about
five (5) years ago, but discontinued it as unnecessary and as
contraproductive. He said that he knew of others who had used/were
using this procedure.

3. The problem was - my new ISP has their server set up so that
giving the bare "LOGIN Username" when connecting will allow the
user to be given ONLY an SLIP connection - a PPP connection will
NOT be allowed. The PPP connection will only be allowed if the
NormalUsername "joeuser" is preceeded by a Capital P (e.g. only
when LOGIN: is answered with "Pjoeuser" will the server authenticate
for a PPP Connection).

4. To do this in Arachne, it is only necessary to prepend a capital
P to the username, in the PPP Section of ARACHNE.CFG......and then
dial as usual. Once this is done, everything goes smoothly on to a
successful PPP Connection.
SO - ...NO scripts are necessary....NO special protocols, etc. Just
prepend the required letter to the "normalusername" and go about
business as usual.

5. This seems so simple, and STUPID....<g> Why would they do this..??
My NormalISPOwner was frantically busy straightening out some problems
with his DSL lines, and didn't have time to explain WHY he had been
originally doing this, and only briefly mentioned that they had
abandoned the practice several years ago...so...can't answer the WHY??
