sorry, misinformed again (:, I *AM* able to menu/script both digital lines
using Trumpet Winsock Or Arachne :) it's simply a matter of adding a few
more commands to the script or Arachne log-in session... my ISP chap/pap
auth. is an experimental server so just adding a few extra keystrokes I
can get to the old menu and so can my Winsock scripts and Arachne
dialer... sorry for jumping to conclusions... the only major change to
both scripts and log-in is the new phone number :)

sorry again for the confusion

I had for a long time used Arachne for my Internet connection
until my provider (this is Novosibirsk State University computer
center) changed from Unix server to MS NT server. Now I simply
cannot log in. I connect with my modem to provider but then the
server doesn't ask me neither for login nor password, and
nothing at all happens.
(snip)

Maybe the NT server requires MS-CHAP? Is that supported by DOSPPPD? I believe
the documentation file for DOSPPPD said MS-CHAP was not supported.

I don't use a PCI modem in DOS, but I use a ISA one. However,
I use the 'Port 0' option or "non-standard IrQ" in Arachne for it.
As Sam said there are many programs you can get that will detect
your modem, or you can download and install Norton Utilities from
a website and use "sysinfo" to find it out. I have Norton installed
too. Do you know what advantages there would be to using a PCI
modem?
- ---(end of quote)

I forgot to answer that last question. ISA is going out of style in favor of
PCI. I think PCI is more efficient, more sparing of IRQs, and avoids
Plug & Pray (?) of ISA. I am not really sure of this, so anybody who knows
better is welcome to correct me.

View costs money? I downloaded it from somewhere and use it once in a
blue moon. It didn't cost a thing. Maybe it's shareware. I'll confess
to not paying for shareware.

Subject: Re: Sending mail with Arachne

..
..
..

As always on this list, the replies to my question about
"Sending mail with Arachne", have been great.

     First, for Clarence Verge:

     1. I have 80 to 90 mailing list FILEs. You asked if just
one of them, or all of them, during the last few weeks fail
when Arachne attempts to send mail To: @FILE

Your thinking is exactly the same as mine. I first thought
I had 1 corrupted FILE of mailing addresses. Therefore,
I have tried 20 to 30 out of the 80 or 90 FILEs. They all
     fail in the same manner.

     2. You asked if there could be a DOS error being generated.
I have experience that in the past, with a DOS error message
overwriting the Arachne page, in the upper left corner, with
a message such as "Bad file or command".

That is not happening, when Arachne refuses to send
     To: @FILE

     3. The error message is actually being reported, within
Arachne, at the bottom of the Arachne screen, on the
"progress reporting line" (if that is what the bottom line
     might be called.

The "progress reporting line" starts reporting that Arachne
has linked to the SMTP server with the following series of
statements on the "progress reporting line". Some of these
lines include (something else) because the statements change
so fast, just flashing for a second, that it is impossible
to fully read some of them:

Copyright (c) 1996-2000 Michael Polak, Arachne Labs

          processing form

          asking domain (and something else)

          connecting to SMTP (port 25)

          HELO (and something else)

          RCPT TO: <(null)>

          RCPT TO: <(null)>

          RCPT TO: <(null)>

          RCPT TO: <(null)>

     4. The "RCPT TO: <(null)>" repeats and repeats, very rapidly,
until I exit/crash Arachne. Otherwise, it would continue in
     that loop forever.

     5. I have followed your advice and copied over a fresh version
of ARACHNE.CFG (with no improvement). I am searching for a
fresh version of MIME.CFG to copy over, to see if that solves
     the problem.

     Second, to Sam Heywood:

     6. Do appreciate your information that some ISPs are limiting
the number of recipients of a single mailing, to help control
spam. I had never heard of this. Great idea. Anything to
prevent unwanted mail from clogging our mailboxes is great.

     7. However, each of my 80 to 90 mailing FILEs has a
maximum of 5 or 6 addressees. I suspect the effort to stop
spam might set a limit of a 100 or 1000 addressees. Nevertheless,
I will contact technical support, since I find your information
valuable. I totally endorse all effort to stop spam.

Thanks to all for your interest and help in chasing down my
     problem of TO: @FILE

It worked so well for 6 months that I am now spoiled, and want
     to get it working again.

Hello Ross;
My original suggestion that it was a DOS error message was due to you
reporting a message like: "Syntax error".
I have searched core.exe and insight.exe for both A1.66 and A1.70 and
find there is no message similar to this in either. It was DOSlike tho.

I will assume now that that message never appeared except in a drug
induced haze, <G> and offer a couple of suggestions based on the
above.
1) Something has gone wrong with your "@" files - possibly something
invisible to your current text editor. In place of <(null)> above,
you should be seeing sequential recipients I'm guessing.
2) Something has happened to Insight and it isn't actually looking at
the "@"file. Copy over a new version.
3) Something could have changed at your email provider. Try a different
   one temporarily.

Good luck.

Sorry my man, but you are only half right. It is quite true that the
*original* excuse for the under-dimentioned 2X4 was the fact that these
had been planned, but that only takes off about 1/4" or less. The fact
is that "2X4's" have been getting thinner and thinner for years
irrespective of planning. Modern econo-studs are sawn at barely over 1
1/2" X 3 1/2" ... garbage wood. My house is about 40 years old and is
made of good, old-growth B.C. Douglas fir; the studs are 1 3/4 X 3 5/8
and quess what? they aren't planned and didn't need to be because the
wood was of such high quality. BTW, I'm an ex professional carpenter,
so I know what I'm talking about.

Howard, I only did this AFTER I started to get my authentication

I don't know why you included Bernie's quote here.....I fully agree...
and don't mess around with anything but Arachne's normal PAP/CHAP, but,
when this failed, I dropped to a terminal status to see what was going
on...AND...found out that is was the "PAP Authentication Failed" that
was happening..

NOW...WHY..??? do you think this might be....??? Is this ISP using
some non-standard type of authentication...???.....other than Arachne's
normal, standard PAP/CHAP...???
I've noticed allusions to "Ms-PAP" or "MS-CHAP"...is this some wierd,
non-standard, excluding type twist on the PAP/CHAP standard...??

I'm google-searching and coming up with quite a bit of interesting,
useful information, but I wanted you folks to throw in your thoughts,
to maybe help me narrow my field of study....<g>

Not administering any servers, all I can repeat is that I've had the same
problem, which was fixed at the ISP end.

Keep mailing `em. It would be nice to get a declaration of the reason.

Hi Gangue

Yesterday and to-day absolutely glorious weather here in Edinburgh.
Temperature up at 21 degrees, about 68 to 70 in real money (GRIN!).

Spent the day yesterday with a paint brush in hand slapping wood
preservative onto the front fence. The two or three beers helped pass
the time a bit as well!. There's something very satisfying about putting
on wood preserver, it's very therapeutic. You can almost hear the wood
of a rough sawn fence sighing and saying - -

"Oooooooh, That's good"

as it soaks up the preservative. Now we've got a "brand new" fence for a
few hours work and a can of preserver. It used to be creaosote, but that
seems to be just about banned in the UK because it's a bit (lots?)
toxicky.

In the afternoon, my two daughters appeared with family and barbecue
stuff. Burgers, steaks, sausages, chicken (and another couple of beers,
or three, or was it four?). BBQ dragged on till light started to go,
well it was such a lovely night. All in all a very satisfying and
pleasant day.

On the Foot and Mouth scene, we're down to single figures in confirmed
cases each day, so maybe it's on the run to the finish. Mind you, with
over 2.6M animals killed, it's going to take a bit of time to get back
to normal, that's for sure.

No luck with the Lottery, so I won't be visiting any of you this week.
What about the space tours man. Cost him loads of $ to go up into space.
In one breath its "good Luck to you" but in the other, I cant' help but
feel what would that amount of money done in the hands of one of the
Third World Aid agencies? Think of the Child Poverty it could have
helped. Or even Medical aid. OXFAM, one of the third world agencies here
in the UK has a TV advert where they say give a man a fish and you feed
him and his family for a day, give hime the fishing stuff and teach him
how to fish, and you feed him and his family for a lifetime. That "Space
Return" would have tauvhgt a lot of men to fish.

Sad news to hear of the death of Douglas Adams, the writer of
"Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy" The sci-fi/cult scene has lost an
icon there. I shall re=read all the books over the years many times I
would think. If there's anyone on the list who is Scottish and into
cult sci-fi, try "But 'n Ben a GO-Go" This is a post holocaust tale
where only those countries with populated high ground have survived.
That makes two of the major world powers, Brazil and Scotland. If you
are Scottish, then it's superbly funny. If you're not a Scot, it's
written in Lallans/Braid (Scottish English) so nothing makes any sense
whatsoever, sorry. Unless you can guess what a "molly cyberjanny" is
you've got no chance! And one of the main caharacters is Paolo Broon.

Mr Blair (the Prime Minister) announced a General Election for June 7th.
Lock up your babies, politicians of all parties are out there looking
for photo opportunities and babies to kiss! I like the description from
one of my other lists.

"Politicians are like babies nappies (diapers in the colonies, GRIN),
they need changing on a regular basis, and for the same reasons, they're
full of ****"

This morning I've gone mad and cleaned the front tiles with the power
washer. This weather is definitely affecting me badly.

Take care guys 'n gals. Have you noticed, on the ladder of life, when
you look down, all you see are people below you looking up. But when you
look up, all you can see is the a**holes of those above you?

Noticed one or two saying goodbye and "moving on" from Arachne. My
http://www.arachne4dos.freeserve.co.uk site is still picking up
about 100 hits each week, and I still don't have time to update it much.
I could be thinking the same soon, although I don't really want to. Can
anyone in touch with Michael find out if rach4dos makes much of a
difference. I don't have tracking facilities to see if it's sending folk
for downloads or not?

Regards

Mel

There's something called MSCHAP, but EPPPD 0.6 (and up) supports it.

Yes of course, but these are unrelated.

On occasion it might be useful yes, but not to use as default.

BTW: There's no need to send to both me and to the list, I read the list
when I can (ie. when the ISP I have chooses to let me connect).

The PPP driver has nothing to do with the DNS requests. Perhaps there's a
problem in WatTCP (that does the DNS requests for most DOS internet
programs). And BTW, Michael if you're reading this there's a newer version
of wattcp out that you can use for the next version of Arachne (whenever it
comes).

Ross,

I had it happen once to me. I cannot, for the life of me, currently
remember what generated that RCPT TO: <null> message. I'll set my
subconscious to work and may remember what I'd done wrong before you get
an answer.

One thing ... a blank line at the start of the file might cause it? As
Clarence said, take a close look at the files with every editor you have
and see if there is a non-acceptable character in there somewhere. And
you might try making up a brand new "test list" to see if it flies. You
wouldn't have to bug anyone to do that, just make yourself the recipent
on each line:

"frustrated1" <your e-dress>
"frustrated2" "
"frustrated3" " etc.

P.S. One further thought: Have you moved the address lists from the
main Arachne directory? That would result in them not being found, and
the mailto: field would then be NULL

..

Thank you, too, for your comments.

I feel like a million bucks now, that someone else
has experienced this problem. Being the only person
with a problem in Arachne is lonlier than being
the Maytag repairman (sorry to those of you not
living in North America, where the Maytag repairman
      resides).

I will be trying all the suggestions ... one by one ...
      until this problem is corrected.

Yes, I've placed the addressee FILEs both in the
Arachne main directory, and outside the main directory.
During the 6 months of successful use of @FILEs
I had all 80 or 90 address lists in @\names\FILE.
      And it worked super.

      I will persist.

Yes, if your "subconscious" kicks in, do let me know
what caused the same error for you.
