Almost everyone mentioned View which costs a little money. Catdoc.zip
also does a pretty decent job and is freeware. There is also a handy
freeware utility called rt that simply strips all characters outside
the ascii text range from a file and uses its own intelligence to
try to present the remaining text in a decent format. It seems to
convert MS word documents quite well.

Even if PAP/CHAP is used for initial connects, there are separate
programs that often require additional ID/passwords. For instance,
when I access my ISP shell, I must enter a separate ID/password
combination to access my IMAP mail server from the shell, or indeed
from my PC directly (using PC pine). Obviously lots of shells will ask
for an ID/password when you try to telnet into them. This is true for
ftp as well.
I have also, on occasion found it useful to disable PAP/CHAP and
use a terminal emulator to access my ISP, in order to troubleshoot
problems that happen at/or just after connection. Then you can see
the prompts, if and when the PPP characters start coming, etc.
In sum, there are still various circumstances when it is useful to
have some kind of automated, scripted entry of ID and password.

Not new.
I reported the problem of F-7 search locking when viewing source with
F-6 some while back. IIRC it is usually if you forget you're in F-6 and
not F-4 ... the F-6 module is very touchy about the way it is handled;
one example is when you use the ESC key or the BACK button from F-6 you
often get a lockup/problem.

I've had exactly the same for a couple of secondary ISPs I wanted
to set up. On both occasions emailing tech support up to half a
dozen times (stating what you've seen, as below) got the problem
fixed, but no actual reply. I guess there's a section in their manual
for dealing with retrogrades. It might help to say you're using "the
dialer that comes with IE5 for Win3.1" to put them in territory as
familiar as possible.

I discovered my ISP changed their dns server and software from bind to
something else. The new server software is incompatible with the above dos
ppp software. WWW/LX works but that is the only dos ppp software I've found
to work and it doesn't work with arachne. Oh well, dos is dead anyway.
Might as well join the rest and be smothered in windows and linux.

my ISP has closed their former analog dial-in telephone lines (: I now
have only 2 dial-in digital lines [provided to my ISP by a new local AND
national telecom competitor] (: no longer do I have the luxury of
unlimited duration shell sessions (: one of the new digital lines ONLY
allows for chap/pap authentication and the other is about 50% chap/pap and
50% script/menu... I will have to take my chances (: because though
Arachne's InSight mailer has been good to me, most of the time I need
Netscape to do much of anything on the web and I don't have dialer
software for chap/pap for my Win3.1 (: I must rely on a Trumpet Winsock
menu script (: I will be okay, and, I guess, taking my 50/50 chances
with this one digital line, it's just that it's the end for me of a
personal era of ease of internet connectivity (: 1995-2001

I don't remember hearing about this problem before. Maybe I somehow
missed it. Thanks.
BTW, I often use the BACK button from F6. So far I have not yet
encountered the lockup probem by doing so.

I worked my little fingertips to blisters to make a nice search form on
my website. It doesn't work for Eudora 5.1 !! I get the feeling that
Eudora isn't HTML 4 compliant. :< I get that feeling because I used
the [button] tag and for the person using Eudora the button doesn't
work. :<
In fact, the button tag upsets Eudora so much that it even displays
on the screen rather than just putting a space in front of the
button. :<<<
What can I add that won't screw up button use but will make the button
usable for non HTML 4 viewers?

I'm pixxed off and tired and still need to mow the lawn, so of course I
referred to the mail reader used by the person finding fault with my
code, rather than the likely browser attached to the mail reader.
Most likely culprit is Netscape, since it will accept Eudora as default
mail handler.
The problem remains the same -- how can I have a button tag, and yet
still make it possible for NS or other browsers that don't do 'buttons'
to use a form?
Anybody want a headache? I've got one free to the first taker ..
