Thanks for the help Clarence, just one question. If I'd like LSPPP to dial
for me could I just add the appropriate switch on the end of the command
line you pasted me?

Thanks again.

To Arachne List and SurvPC List:

After several years in these lists, I am probably considered a long-
timer. I have now lost interest in old computers for primary
computing. (Have the 486's as servers!) I haven't used Arachne in
months (Although I should try out linux versions one of these days)

It all started late last year with my first tax return, with which I
bought a brand new Duron with plenty of RAM and HDD space.
And also a new group of friends who are all into 3D games and
such. (So I also have a Geforce2mx :)

Anyway, I'll be leaving the list (properly), possibly forever.

With this change I'm leaving my current ISP so after the end of this
month [EMAIL PROTECTED] will not work. I'm using
[EMAIL PROTECTED] for now, if you need to get into contact
with me.

Take Care.

Despite being taught in the schools for for over forty years and
despite usage in the scientific community and in the American
military, not to mention the rest of the world, there is no widespread
movement in the United States to adopt the metric system. It
doesn't even come up anymore as a serious alternative.

It seems to be a dead issue here as far as I can tell.

Almost any chain store with photo processing such as Wal-Mart or
KMart can provide high resolution JPEG's on disc with your photo
developing now. You have to pay a few dollars more for high resolution.
Otherwise you get 640x480. Just read the envelope that you drop the film
off in.

That seems a simple enough request. But any request that requires the
bulk photo finisher to do something outside of their regular routine
requires special attention and involves extra work for them to do
less! That's why they consider it a custom job. It interupts their
bulk process, which is just about completely automated and runs
continuously. That's why bulk photo developing is inexpensive.

Subject: Bug report: Trashed Arachne.Cfg file

Those smiley faces are back.

I opened up Arachne today and almost immediately had problems. I have
my inbox as "home page"; from there I clicked on the toolbar "little
envelope" to get to the mail handling toolbar so I could find a specific
tbs I wanted to work on.

When I clicked, I suddenly had NO toolbar. It wasn't a matter of it
being "there" but not written to screen; I carefully 'quartered' the
entire area of the screen and there were no active anythings behind that
blank grey surface.

I went to toolbar.tb and it was fine ... hadn't been written to for ages
[file dates do come in handy sometimes]. I went to check mime.cfg and
it was fine -- not written for ages either.

I was unhappy camper. Although the file downloading I do is minimal, I
went to F-Prot and ran that; although outdated, it said everything was
fine, virus-wize.

I then went to the F-Prot ftp site, saw a number of new things, so went
to F-Prot website to check out what was which/where/when ... I then
downloaded everything necessary to bring F-Prot up to date -- a couple
of things via html and a couple via ftp. With the new downloads, I
closed down Arachne and then upgraded the HDD and 3-floppy installs of
F-Prot.

I then went back to Arachne, and the toolbar was back. Following a
hunch, I once again [I've been doing it about once a week or so, because
we've never been able to get a real handle on what overwrites the smiley
faces] checked out Arachne.cfg.

That's when I found the smiley faces were back.

I immediately saved that version of arachne.cfg, and then saved
history.lst [not that *that* is worth much, since it writes lines into
the file in a rather random manner!]. I again checked toolbar.tb and
mime.cfg, and they were both still pristine.

So, if anyone listening might be able to pinpoint the source of the
smiley faces based upon this more precise information, and the history
list, and the flawed cfg file, let me know and I'll send you the two
files.

I remember back in the late 1960's, or maybe it was in the early 1970's,
there was an impetus and an official encouragement by the US government
for everyone to convert to the metric system. Many gasoline stations
started selling their gas by the liter sometime in the early 1970's. Due
to the unpopularity of the system among consumers, this practice was
discontinued after about six months.

In the early 1960's the US military started equipping the sights and aiming
devices on its weapons systems in meters instead of yards. Also ranges and
ballistics tables were converted to the metric standards. The US military
is still using the metric standard for its weapons systems. This makes
sense because most of the US allies in NATO and other treaty organizations
use the metric system. Another reason why the metric system makes more
sense for weapons systems is that linear metric measurements are related
to geographic coordinates and also to the military UTM grid systems on maps.

In using the engineering formulas for calculating demolitions charges, the
US military still uses inches and feet. I don't know why they have not
yet converted these formulas to metric. Perhaps it is because the metric
system might tend to upset the often used and well known "rules of thumb",
which are certainly good enough for that kind of government work.

I can sympathize with this. For all its laudable virtues, Arachne
has not been able to, or has chosen not to be able to keep up with
the the trendy upgrades, and bells and whistles that major and
commercial websites are now virtually dripping with - javascript,
jave, tons of cgi scripts, dynamically created webpages, Xml various
other enhanced (?) ``ML's'' real audio, falso audio, windows
registry required -- an on and on. My favorite is putting important
text WITHIN gif images so you an not read the text withtout a fast
DSL connection and a recent/fast OS/computer.

Happily I find my DOS (!) (and Unix) port of the text browser, Lynx,
can still render almost all the sites I care about decently. It even
has SSL encryption with forms, if you want to buy a cheezeburger over
the internet.

We are sorry you are going but you hinted at, but did not really
come right out and say why. Do you want/need access to the 3D games
and other new do-dads? Or, has ordinary practical functionality become
just too hard without the latest version of MS office, etc?

Personally, I find the every more devious DE-modular-ization of
new software somewhat of an appalling money grab similar to the
current California energy. I have my own thriving busness going,
fixing the PCs of friends and friends with businesses that have
windows for free. About every few months the things become so clogged
with registry gunk and other plumbing problems that a windows reinstall
is less painful than trying to discover where the latest, non-updated
driver is hiding this time.

Hopefully, Linux will not go the same way, but there are troublsome
signs here, as businesses want and get professional hardware/software
``support'' for their linux systems. The open standards are starting
to close, and installing/porting a program meant for RedHat is getting
increasingly harder, if you installed another version -- not to mention
the cottage industry of winblows look-alike guis for Linux being
built on top of X windows.

End of rant - consumers of the world unite!

Hi Gangue,

No politics here zone, despite the UK election campaign. Aside from the
political bit, did most of you see our Deputy PM, John Prescott taking a
swing at a protester who hit him with an egg? All "good" stuff that, eh?

Of course, irrespective of the rights and wrongs of either side, the
protestor or the politician, it was the protestor who was arrested,
whilst the politician was escorted to "safety". If that had been myself
and let's say Or Botton (sorry Or, GRIN *>} ) doing this, we would have
been both arrested and thrown in jail to cool off, but that's the way of
the world.

A day without any new cases of F & M disease. Only one, but maybe the
end is in sight.

Been away with the Caravan to one of the local Country parks. So glad to
get away. Walked around the two Lochs (Lakes for those non Scots) and
watched the water birds, swans, ducks, greylag geese, coots, water-hens.
Sat in the van last night and counted the Squirrells in the pine trees,
and the rabbits in the bushes. Was almost certain we saw a wildcat there
as well, and we heard but did not see a capaercaillzie. The campsite was
in clearings in a part of the Central Scotland Park forest area, so we
were able to see this without moving from the van.

Saw Hoody's note about leaving the Arachne listing and so on. Wasn't
Hoody running the webring at one time?, and if he was and is going,
what's happening to the website ring? NO, don't ask me, I've got enough
commercial work at present without taking on something I know nothing
about!

Thanks for feedback on the maresme pages. Arachne actually behaves much
better with this site than Nutcrack does. Netcrap just displays the
links and loses the actual a href tags totally so that it doesn't work.
It looks like I will have to load up a Nitskip only page to take care of
this, and of course a browser detction script and a ....

iF YOU WANT ANOTHER LOOK, then try

http://www.maresme.fsnet.co.uk

and follow the click to enter link. The next page has an expanding links
list in the left hand frame (in IE that is).

Finally for Ron in Ozland, the Pajero is doing fine Ron. I get about 27
mpg on Diesel solo, and about 26 mpg towing as long as I keep the revs
around 2750 on the rev counter.

Regards everyone, never even got one Lottery number out of six this
week, so don't worry, not visiting you agian this week!

Without the URL, we can't test the files in question to see if they
might be "corrupt".

Try Bernie's suggestion of doing a "manual conversion" with djpeg32.exe
direct from the Dos command prompt.
Then any error messages will be visible.

Another possible cause would be if the JPGs are actually GIFs

Try this as an expmple...

Dear Earthlink:

Thanks for the e-mail message. I do not currently use Arachne
for HTTPS access with account management. I will look into it more
when I can get some available time.

Yours,

Thomas Tabler

Dear List:

Mindspring/Earthlink said that most of their pages require Javascript
enabled now.  Also they said that Arachne has plug-ins :}}} {ssh-dos client?}
to be able to access their account management section. I don't know
immediately how to set it up. This is for those who would like to have or
try a national ISP with a website, etc. Earthlink is listed on several
sites as being 'Arachne-friendly'.

Yours,

Thomas/"tomstfor"

Any site that REQUIRES javascript isn't HUMAN friendly let alone Arachne
friendly. I wonder where all these aliens are coming from ?

Thanks Gregy.
Yes, I saved Howard's message also to remind me that there is more than
one way to skin an authenticator.

It would have been good of course. But if we remember what Kaine said (in
the early 1930's IIRC) it's better for those who have much money to spend
it so that others who are less fortunate can get employed (and so on). Most
countries doesn't believe in what Kaine said these days but in a way it's
correct. However I wonder how many russians were actually helped directly
by this. In one sense paying the russians might have helped them keep the
"business" going for a while and the amount of knowledge they've gathered
over the years shouldn't be lost (well probably not all of it would since
NASA or ESA would probably hire many of them).

I can try and check that, if I remember. Clarence could probably check as
well if he finds his way around arachne.cz.
