Here are some tips that I use to appear much smarter than I really am...

1.
If your question is of the form "Has anyone ever heard of
company, product, protocol, standard, etc. called ABC?", start with
Google at www.google.com.
2.
If your question is of the form "Does anyone have any experience
with..." or "Has anyone ever run into XYZ?", use the archive search at
www.arslist.org or
http://www.nabble.com/ARS-(Action-Request-System)-f716.html
3.
If your question is "Does anyone have any documentation on...",
try going to BMC Support Central's documentation section at:
http://www.bmc.com/support/hou_Support_ProdAllVersions/0,3646,19097_1969
5_108018_0,00.html. This includes not only guides, but white papers,
release notes, technical bulletins and other related documents.
4.
If your question is "Does BMC support...", check first in the
compatibility matrix at:
http://www.bmc.com/support/bmcremedycomp/index.htm
5.
If your question is "Does anyone have more info about FOO in AR
System?", use Adobe to search through the documentation. You can grab
all the documentation at once at https://webapps.bmc.com/epd/. If you
put all the PDF's into one directory, Acrobat Reader has an option to
search across multiple documents in a specified directory. In the
search window, look for the "Where would you like to search?" section
and select the "All PDF documents in" option.
6.
Save every E-mail that you send or receive if it's not archived
somewhere else (e.g. the arslist archives). Then use a free desktop
search product from Google (http://desktop.google.com/), Copernic
(http://www.copernic.com/) or others when you "seem to remember that
topic coming up previously". Creating archive folders and occasionally
moving blocks of E-mail into them (e.g. I create one folder per month
for inbound E-mail and one folder per quarter for outbound) can help
keep your online Inbox smaller.

Hope this helps for those folks who would like to "learn to fish" prior
to asking a question online...

Well said Kaiser. I've been posting to this list for about 8 years, and
believe me, when I started, I asked some pretty wild and basic questions
that I probably could have found the answer for myself, but didn't even
know where to begin looking! Heck, there are days where I still do!
The people on this list were always kind and helpful, and not once did I
get jumped!

The last couple of years, the lack of civility and increase in attacks
on posters has been steady. There is enough pain in the world, do we
really need to drag it in here to?

If a post annoys you due to a lack of information, or the question is
too basic (in your opinion), then don't answer it! But please people,
let's stop spewing the invective all over this forum.

Can't we all just get along?

I *mostly* agree with this post except for stuff about the
sarcasm.

I've noticed the sarcasm towards innocent (and clearly *new*
posters)
has increased markedly on this list. This list was always the
hallmark
        of friendliness, professionalism, and helpfulness--especially
towards
newbies. We've been straying from that a bit, and I think we
should
        return to it.

I suggest we all please refrain from "skewering" or "roasting"
new
posters (or any poster, for that matter) with sarcasm and/or
disdain.
It's totally unnecessary. If a question is unclear or missing
information, how about just asking, "Bob, could you provide us a
little
        more information? Specifically..."

I *do* agree with the point made about anonymous names. It's
best to
use your *real* name to preserve civility. I suppose, however,
that
some people are worried about exposing their inexperience or
naivety...but at least give us a first name we can refer to you
by.

And the expectation that someone go to the support site before
posting
to this list is unrealistic, in my opinion. The whole point of
this
list--to me--has always been, "The ARSList community is 1000
times
better than the official BMC support...and it's free. The only
cost is
that you provide advice to others when you're able."

** Message from New ARList Poster Goofus-

Help!!!!!! I'm stuck on SOMETHING wrong within my AR system.
I haven't done anything MYSELF to find out what the problem is,
nor have
I read ANY freakin manuals... oh ya, by the way I haven't
searched the
ARSList either to see if a existing issue exists.
What I really want is someone else to do all the work for me.
My current AR system setup - Yes, it's setup, in that box in the
corner.
Why should I tell you what my system has, you might get AR envy.

Thanks a bunch for doing my work for me.

        sincerely,

AR_Escalator (aka Filter guy, aka REmeDy Zodiac, aka COPY AND
PASTE ANY
        BMC NAMING CONVENTION HERE)

Hey man, I don't need to tell you my name; the internet is
anonymous for
all you know I could be Mark Twain.

(23 posts later Remedy Zodiac gets the info he/she needs.)

Message from New ARList Poster Gallant-

        Hello ARSList,

I have an issue with filter guides. Filter 3 is not firing with
in the
guide. I have ran some log files to see what the issue is and I
can not
see an error. I have included the log files in this email. I
have
checked BMC's support site and ARSList to no avail.
        My setup -
        Remedy Server
        ITSM
        Etc
If there is any other information please let me know.

        Thank you for your assistance,

        Joe Gallant

(3 posts later Joe gets the info he needs.)

The moral of the story -

This is a public list, yes I know that. But there are some
common ground
        rules -

If you need help, please be as descriptive as possible. (The
issue, your
        setup, what you tried, etc)

Please use a Human name, even if it's a cover name. Mark Twain
is way
better than REmeDy Zodiac. WHAT ARE YOU HIDING?

When you ask a silly question, you get a really silly answer.
Don't be
upset at the SARCASIM you get when you post a silly question.

Please don't be afraid to post a question. The ARSList community
is here
        to help.

        Sincerely,

REmeDy Zodiac, or maybe Mid-Tier Psychic, oooohh no wait Field
