What's funny is I just found the 6.3 version (ARSList FAQ and
Netiquette- 2006-04-01.pdf) of her FAQ posting in one of my folders on
this PC

Rick & Others:

Time for cheese with all this whine !

I want to defend Claire's original response the posted question.

While her post may have been a wee-bit terse I did not see it as
inflammatory and she went as
far as placing an OT prefix on the subject line. While it may be easy to
slip in with the
tide of current popular opinion on this issue, from Claire's OT message
it was levity clear and simple.

Rick, you seemed to have replied to her OT message with some levity as
well ?

The current trend of creating a pseudo name, IMO, is just not fair to
those on this list
who have helped so many others across the years and it irks the "old
timers". So you want to
post a message as BOZO the clown, then go for it but be prepared for the
slings and arrows
that follow suit - that is human nature and be forewarned.

There is no way that Dan can "police" the list and restrict names that
posters may select, so like
it or not the trend will continue. Newbie's don't know the questions so
a moment of consideration
is always followed by, can you supply us with more information?

I do miss the days when Claire posted the ARSList etiquette regularly -
it always served as a "constant"
reminder of the guidelines to socially acceptable messages that were
allowed on the list.

Gidd

I've been around longer than most here, and I, too, have seen a decline
in netiquette here since I first joined the list 10 years ago. Part of
it is the maturing (or the reverse) of the use of the internet. Part of
it is that more and more of the listers cut their computing teeth on
less formal IT and business "practices". In a world where Yahoo!
Answers can allow one to get great help while remaining anonymous, why
should we be different? Because we're not the entire world - we're a
close-knit family of people using a common software development and
application platform. Our conferences are almost as much family
reunions as geek-fests. So, to any new listers out there, that's why we
sometimes come across as over-protective of some standards here. We
have a pretty good thing going here, and we want to see it continue.

That being said, we have work to do of our own, and while we love to
help others, we would really appreciate it if you would respect the time
we take to give you FREE advice by doing the following:

1) Give us your name. If, for some reason, you want or need it to be a
fictitious one, that's fine, just so that we have some carbon-based
handle by which to refer to you - NOT a screen name. If you also want
to tell us where you work, that may spur someone in a similar line of
work or geographic area to help you when they otherwise might not.
Giving some contact information can result in some more directed
information being delivered to you off-list than could be posted on it.
I know of no one who has ever been harrassed or spammed as a result of
this. We're a family, and we won't tolerate that.
2) Do what research you can before posting. If you're a newbie, we
know how overwhelming this can be - sometimes you don't even know where
to start looking. Do what you can, as much or as little as that might
be. Show us you've worked on it, and we're more willing to work with
you.
3) Tell us as much as you can about your Remedy environment. Detailed
Hardware specs are not necessary, but telling us the OS/DBMS, ARS and/or
ITSM versions you're using is essential to receiving appropriate help.
Get used to providing it to us just as you should to Support.
4) Thank those who actually provide assistance.
5) Help someone else when you get the chance. Call it Karma, the
Golden Rule, or just being nice. Either way, that's how the list grows,
and maintains its place as one of the finest sources of free help
available on the net.

** Message from New ARList Poster Goofus-

Help!!!!!! I'm stuck on SOMETHING wrong within my AR system.
I haven't done anything MYSELF to find out what the problem is,
nor have I read ANY freakin manuals... oh ya, by the way I haven't
searched the ARSList either to see if a existing issue exists.
What I really want is someone else to do all the work for me.
My current AR system setup - Yes, it's setup, in that box in the
corner. Why should I tell you what my system has, you might get AR envy.

Thanks a bunch for doing my work for me.

        sincerely,

AR_Escalator (aka Filter guy, aka REmeDy Zodiac, aka COPY AND
PASTE ANY BMC NAMING CONVENTION HERE)

Hey man, I don't need to tell you my name; the internet is
anonymous for all you know I could be Mark Twain.

(23 posts later Remedy Zodiac gets the info he/she needs.)

Message from New ARList Poster Gallant-

        Hello ARSList,

I have an issue with filter guides. Filter 3 is not firing with
in the guide. I have ran some log files to see what the issue is and I
can not see an error. I have included the log files in this email. I
have checked BMC's support site and ARSList to no avail.
        My setup -
        Remedy Server
        ITSM
        Etc
If there is any other information please let me know.

        Thank you for your assistance,

        Joe Gallant

(3 posts later Joe gets the info he needs.)

The moral of the story -

This is a public list, yes I know that. But there are some
common ground rules -

If you need help, please be as descriptive as possible. (The
issue, your setup, what you tried, etc)

Please use a Human name, even if it's a cover name. Mark Twain
is way better than REmeDy Zodiac. WHAT ARE YOU HIDING?

When you ask a silly question, you get a really silly answer.
Don't be upset at the SARCASIM you get when you post a silly question.

Please don't be afraid to post a question. The ARSList community
is here to help.

        Sincerely,

REmeDy Zodiac, or maybe Mid-Tier Psychic, oooohh no wait Field
112 <---(perfect name, I'm Multi-Tenancy)
