this discussion is chasing rabbit holes, lets focus on the main point, and the main goal:
server is the only app of any consequence I am aware of, that forces users into one list. every other important app allows users to choose on the fly if they want to browse artists, or album artists. server should allow users to browse either/or, without requiring changes to options or rescans. this is years overdue. server could also easily enable a third mode, "all artists" which would be artists and album artists together. (and obviously merging any exact matches) instead of chasing rabbit holes, and trying to figure out every possible permutation and reasons to fear and maintain status quo, why not just enable at the very least the 2 modes every other app has [a/aa], and possibly include the third ["all"], and simply make it a pref as to which of the 3 modes you want to enable? (requiring at least one of them, users choice, to be enabled) that way, server can offer users more usability without making anyone change anything they are currently doing. what was proposed earlier by jjzolx regarding this doesn't seem to me very different to me than having a category of just comps, and the gains in queries and DB efficiency you have written about. I am for these ideas, but they will never happen if we come up with reasons not to do them which don't stand up to the reason to do them, and the value of the goal in doing so.
