My idea is that 'Artists' would include _all_ artists. Unless there's some good reason not to include album artists in that list. Maybe there's some situation of how someone wants to organize classical music or tribute albums that would be the reason, and I'd like to hear about it and discuss it.
That's not a rabbit hole. It's the very reason we have discussions like this. If the reasoning is sound, then it becomes more compelling to the developers to implement the idea. You bring up having a 'Browse Compilations' mode, which is something Phil has always wanted. I contend that there's no reason to have this, because it's identical to Browse Artists > Various Artists. Always placing the VA pseudo-artist first in the artist list makes getting into the compilation list trivial.
