I would take it a step further than that.  It's a list of music performers (any 
artist role) that have albums that can be played.

I'm not sure why band, composer and conductor should be treated differently to 
artist role.
So whether a music performer is an artist, band, composer or conductor, if they 
appear on every track, or have an explicit "album artist" tag, they should be 
listed.

If the user wants to see performers that appear only on one track of an album 
(don't have any album involvement), they could browse All Artists, All Bands, 
All Conductors, or All Composers.  Perhaps a top-level menu:

All Performers >
        Artists >
        Bands >
        Composers >
        Conductors >

Or "All Performers" being a list of all artists, bands, composers, conductors, 
where it is possible to filter the list down (checkboxes to enable/disable the 
display of each of these roles).
