(pulse generator) for a "late" M20 engine with the toothed vibration damper pulley.

thanks!

What size is the nut? It would be really slick to go to sears, buy the
wrench I need, jack the car up and have the whole thing out in one fell
swoop. When I did the passenger side a year ago I froze when I saw that nut
on the driver side arm. I double checked that joint and it was still pretty
tight so I said let her ride for now.

re: Pickle:
Pickle is just the right word here.
1. Use a pickle fork (ball joint breaker) jammed or hammered in between
the arm and the cross-member. This will keep tension so the ball joint
stem doesn't turn.
2. torch the nut so the plastic in the locknut softens. May not be
necessary but makes the job mucho easier if the nuts been on for a long
time or is horribly overtightened.
3. Use a ratcheting box wrench, available at any Sears harware, on the
nut and with sufficient grunting it will remove the nut, partial turns
at a time. Possible hitting the other end of the wrench with a mallet
will help.
I've been using this method, pickle fork, and wrench, for about 20 years
now.
Hope this helps,

Barry

chris,
you have an 89 325 so you should already have the "good" fuel tank. you
should be able to run it down below 1/4 without fuel starvation. sounds
like you have a weak fuel pump.

you should also be able to run it totally full in left handers without fuel
sloshing out. check the gasket on your gas cap and the integrity of your
vent lines.

long shot/worst case, but the metal transfer line on the top of the tank may
have rusted through. this both prevents transfer and leaks gas. it
happened to me on my e30 race car. if this is the case, it is time to
replace the tank. make sure you get one from an 89 or newer southern car
(www.bimmerssouth.com is a good source).

all of the above happened to me. after fixing each of these items i never
had any issues with fuel starvation. no baffles or fancy fuel systems are
needed on these cars.

I've got a well maintained 4HP22 that's starting to slip at 143,000 miles.
First gear is solid. Slight slipping in second and third under hard
acceleration. If I back off the throttle, it stops.

It's time to do the service on the unit with a new filter and fresh fluid
and I'm going to replace the original DME and fuel pump relays for good
measure. Bruno's E34 site mentions the Pulse Generator/speed sensor as a
possible failure point, but I'll wait to see if the service will make a
difference before I get to it.

Am I covering my bases? Any other wisdom out there that can get me down the
road some more miles before I whip out the Visa for a transplant on the ole
gal?

Thanks,
Robert - Houston

Hello all. Time has come for me to bid farewell to my e30 after many
enjoyable years.

1989 BMW 325i - 5-speed manual w/ABS & limited slip differential
Bronzitbeige metallic - 158,000 miles Timing belt, water pump, radiator,
Bilstein HD struts & rear shocks at 139k A/C, pw windows, central locking
(w/ remote), pw mirrors, and manual sunroof Full brake job - Porterfield
R-4S brake pads, new rotors, and fluid at 149k Bridgestone Potenza RE950's
at 151k New battery (05/2003) Blaupunkt Toronto CD player w/ keycard
security, steering mounted remote, and 3.5mm AUX input (great for an MP3
player) Boston Acoustics speakers & 8" powered Bazooka sub-woofer (sounds
great for a 4-speaker system) PIAA super-white headlight bulbs ($125/set)

The good, the bad...the asking price
The car is accident free, clean and only very minor surface rust spots.
Maintenance records since new. Few small tears in door panel (previous
owner's dog). I have replaced most of the seat covers, so they are like new.
One door lock is no longer active with the central locking system.
The car runs great, and is a joy to drive. I've had it for six years and
want something "new". I would keep it, but don't have the space to hang on
to it...asking $2500 CDN. Car is located in Toronto, ON. Prefer a local
sale.

My bad. (Do people still say that? Or is it just sooo 2002?) I could
have sworn that Jesse was involved in both shows, but obviously he is not.
He does own a rather large custom bike shop called West Coast Chopper,
however, so my original suggestion that Mr. James has little time for BMW
maintenance still stands.

Now you have gone and insulted Jesse, everyone knows that the Teutels are
"American Chopper" and Jesse does "Monster Garage" (and now some other spin
offs). Some would say the Teutels are just a bunch of hacks...right Mark

But remember, the smog check laws are not designed to make the air clean,
they are designed for politicians to get support and recognition, not to
mention campaign contributions.

Certainly, if there is no adverse affect on pollution, making such mods is
fine with me (not that my opinion matters), if the owner is willing to go
through the time and expense of putting it back to stock every 2 years to
pass the visual part of the smog check.

Subject: OBD-I Codes - How Long do they Stay in Memory?
Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

My car is an E30 1990 325i. Yesterday, returning home from the GGC
autocross, I got an intermittant Check Engine light. At first I was
tempted to pull over, open the hood and check to see if the engine was
still there, but then I realized that I could hear it and see the tach
needle moving in response to my right foot, so of course it was still
there!

But seriously. For the first hour of my trip, the light would come on
under acceleration or cruising with the throttle open. But, whenever I
allowed the throttle to close, the light would go out. I decided to do the
Stomp Test when I got home. Unfortunately, by the time I got home (about
90+ minutes after leaving the autocross site), the light was no longer
lighting. Also, I was so tired that I just wanted to grab a bite and go to
bed. Checking flash codes did not seem remotely interesting at that point.

So my question is, how long will the reason(s) for the check engine light
remain in memory? Will I still be able to retrieve the codes when I get
home from work tonight? And if they're no longer stored, should I even
care?

TIA,

Scott Miller

I'm pretty sure the codes only get reset after a few restarts.. time /
mileage makes no difference.. it's starting the car that does it. Codes
should still be there if all you did was drive to work.

Stomp test is easy, might as well check. Mine did the same thing in the
winter because the AFM was frozen and stuck ;) but that's probably not your
problem

Hello all,

The time has come to sell the iX. It's been a wonderful car
and I hate to sell it but I'm seeking a new toy and the wife
says something has to go!

Some details:

1989 325iX, 4 door, red/tan, 5spd, comes with factory steel
wheels with Hakka snows
Mileage is just over 191k, I bought it from the original
owner with 113k on it in October of 1998
Maintenance is current, car runs very well, still a major
blast to drive, especially in winter!
Price is $5600 OBO, I'm located in Brighton, MI, about
60mins west of Detroit

I have created a webpage for it so please check it out,
email if you have questions. Thanks!

http://www.skumwerks.net/forsale/89_325iX.htm

Also on this site are a couple pages about some of the
upgrades and maintenance procedures I've done on the car.

Thanks!
