While you are checking the clutch and brake pedal switches, make sure the
speed signal wire (single pole) is plugged into the correct socket on the
instrument panel.

Since I sold my '98 540/6, I am selling a set of four
BBS RX 16x8 wheels mounted with Blizzak (225/55/16)
snow tires. The wheels are not perfect, but are in
excellent shape. The Blizzaks have tons of tread left
on them. It's about a $1400-$1500 set from Tire Rack.
First $600 plus shipping gets them. Preference given
to anyone local enough to pick them up.

Hi,
Getting ready to replace the front Wheel bearings on my 318i E30 1984. Given that
Bentley cautions that I need special tools to do this job.
Can anyone give some advise on what special tools. I know I need a Puller for
removal. But the state special tools to install?
Any suggestions or tips for me? Maybe even a definition of the "Special" tool

My body shop manager buddy tells me they always masked the hard edges
before buffing/compounding, as it is very (ask me why I had this discussion
with him) easy to burn thru the paint on a corner, crease, or edge of the car.
I only did it in two places, it was my first time with a buffer..YMMV
I did find keeping the speed below 1400 and buffing so the pad was going in
the "off the edge" direction was much safer than buffing so the pad was
spinning towards the edge.
I will be masking in the future..

Today was my first smog check under the California Smog Check 2
program, in which they run your car on a dyno to sniff the exhaust.
Two years ago, under the stationary test (no dyno), I remember one of
the 3 measured gasses was very close to exceeding the limit. (I don't
remember which one.) I was really worried that I was going to fail
this time, and that I would be buying a new cat. This is the cat that
Bill Arnold, in '96 when I bought the car, said that the stuff inside
the cat was breaking apart, and that I might need a new one soon.
I'm less than 1000 miles from my next Inspection I, which I'm trying
to put off for another month or so. I called Bill Arnold for advice.
Bill knows my car and he knows the smog test. His advice was:
1. Replace the Conforti chip with the stock chip. The advanced
timing from the Conforti chip could cause a problem. (I did.)
2. Continue to use premium fuel. (I did, despite prices up to $2.559
per gallon.)
3. Run throuth a bottle or two of fuel additive before the test. (I
ran one.)
4. Get the cat really hot first. (I've been doing this for years.)
So first I took my 1990 325i (117K miles) for a nice 45 minute drive,
going up hills and using higher than normal revs when possible. When
I got to the test shop, they could not take me right away. I sat in
the car with the engine idling for 45 minutes until they could take
the car.
And it passed.
At 15 MPH, 2012 RPM:
Gas Allowed Mine
HC (ppm) 108 79
CO (%) 0.71 0.28
NOx (ppm) 767 625
At 25 MPH, 2109 RPM:
Gas Allowed Mine
HC (ppm) 83 74
CO (%) 0.58 0.29
NOx (ppm) 706 602
It still looks to me like I'm on borrowed time, with respect to NOx
and 25 MPH HC. And once again, no one noticed the hole in the
muffler.
Next report in 2 years.

I've been told that color sanding only works on cars without a clear coat
over the paint and I thought that all 1994 BMWs had clear coat.
If it turns out that the car will benefit from a color sanding you should
look in to having a professional do it since color/wet sanding is more of an
art than a science just like buffing with a serious (not random orbital)
buffer.
Even pros will often burn through the paint in a couple places with rubbing
compound and a buffer and I've seen some real disasters when people tried
wet/color sanding and/or power buffing with a serious rubbing compound for
the first time.

I'm planning to swap differentials on my 325e for better track performance and looking
for something around a 3.46.
Does anyone know of a source for information on the differential ratios for different
years of the E30?
One salvage yard said they had one from a 733 that would fit. Is it compatible and
what would the ratio be?

OK boys & girls here is the lowdown as I know it. Bracketed comments are
mine.
On certain e39 (model run unknown to me) there is an "Update" aka recall to
reinforce the area I would call the spring perch. BMW calls them "spring
clips" They are beefy aluminum castings which sit on the outboard side of
the front strut. They clamp to the front strut and under the spring. There
is a notch in the spring perch where the casting fits.
This what the service bulletin says;
In certain driving climates and operating conditions such as long exposure
to high ambient temps, high humidity,and salty air, combined with prolonged
periods of "stop and go" traffic, the material structure of the plate
(spring perch) could be affected.
In some cases,the strut plate could begin to crack and eventually fail.
Check frt. struts and install retaining clips if necessary. Part
#31-30-6-767-208
This "upgrade" is a no brainer. The job only requires removal of the wheel.
It takes about 30 min.
On my initial road test there is a better, flatter, response on lane
changing and ramp entering and exiting.
The car seems to respond more smoothly to steering inputs. I will be driving
over 200 miles this weekend so I will have a better evaluation latter. Dave
