Well, the obvious start is to remove the head.

The rocker shafts are removed either with a slide hammer or an almost
equally sized drift. There are FOUR rocker shafts, which makes the slide
hammer method preferable, as you only have to get three of the rockers to
relax in order to remove each shaft.

BMW has a really nice jig that allows removal of the cam without removing
the rockers, but we don't offer it for rent because of the shipping cost (it
weighs about 50lb)

Marc,

That is very saddening. Always curious as to whether they were wearing
helmets ,seatbelts, or had any previous experience... I have been doing
DE's and SCCA stuff for about 6 years. I have seen 2 concussions and 1
broken foot in that time. IMO Compared to skiiing its very safe... But you
put someone in carrera Gt on a nascar speedway and bad things can and will
happen...

Example: Virper Days came to VIR. They allow true novices to take their
cars out on track without instructors. The balled up 5 cars during the
first day off the event...

I know someone also died a Summit Point last year as well during a
HPDE/Lapping Day.... Don't know much about that...

On the other hand. People die on regular basis everytime I go to the
Nurburgring...

The rumor was that there is no corner workers and
chief steward on site. Only the infield track was
used and no oval. The CGT driver had to swerve to
avoid hitting a f-car exiting the pit.

I've done events like those and usually you have to be very selective
as to who gets invited. You want experienced folks and even then
there's a lot of risks involved, hopefully the track is open enough
that you can see way ahead and if you have to go off there's plenty of
grass and no armco to hit close by.

Different point but obviously Vettes, Vipers, M5s, etc are now going to
be in the 500hp and beyond HP range. I feel bad for you guys that are
instructors and have to deal with these cars. Ideally people have
moved up to those cars and have experience on the track with cars with
less HP but I'm sure that's not always going to be the case. IMO
everyone should start with an E30 and move up from there. :-)

So what do you say to your student that shows up in the 500-600hp car
and it's his first time? or maybe not 500hp but they show up in an
Elise or a Radical or a Noble?

Carlos.

Hi,
I'm in the middle of installing a set of VDO gauges
to replace the sunglass holder. The 6 screws holding
the glovebox compartment had been removed. But
glovebox will not yield when pulling on the glovebox
door. Am I missing any more screws not detailed in the
Bentley?
Secondly, do I route the wire using the same hole in
the firewall which the battery and alarm wiring runs?
It does not look like there is enough room. Is there
another hole in the firewall?
Thanks!

we maybe able to help you if you gave an idea as to model of BMW you're
working on. I would have guessed it was an E36 but for the life of me I
can't figure out why you'd be removing the glovebox on an E36 to get to the
sunglass holder.

Yes, its an e36. I'm removing the glovebox so that I
can remove the kick panel in order to pull back the
carpet to give me better access to the hole in the
firewall.

Well, I'm GUESSING it is a 2 airbag car...

Pull the glovebox light and with a 10mm socket and ratchet, remove the
screw that it was hiding. Then the box oughta come out.

Every alignment machine I ever worked on had a device for locking the
steering wheel at center. Of course the "set" of the tires coupled
with the crown of local roads generally called for some adjustment,
either a slight counter-clockwise pre-load or swapping front tires
side-to-side.

After working at dealerships for over twenty years, if I had a car I
was really proud of the finish on, I'd pay the dealer NOT to wash my
car.
