The gas pedal on the wife's new (to us) 2002 X5 sticks. It's a bit stiff and
notchy... difficult to finesse precisely. Drives me crazy. This is one of
'dem new-fangled drive-by-wire setups (new to me). I'd intended on taking the
sending unit apart (hoping for a pivot to lube), but it's held together with
some odd-shaped fasteners for which I have no tools.

Anybody got any experiences to share? I really need to smooth this out.

I think that there was a recall or service action on some 02 3 series
cars for the exact same thing. Try asking the dealer about it. I
never liked the throttle pedal curve on my 330i, although installing
the Conforti software really helped smooth it out.

If its a mechanical issue, disassemble the pedal thingy with the pot-o-meter
inside and check it out.

Sorry I can't help about the radiator hoses, but this post reminded me that
there are a lot of SF Bay Area people on the list.

Has anyone else had their Valentine One get a lot of random K band hits
driving on Interstate 280 between Burlingame and Los Gatos? I live in San
Francisco and don't go south of Burlingame (where my parents live) very
often but the last couple times I have driven south on 280 the Valentine One
kept getting K band hit after K band hit.

P.S. I'll be down in Monterey County for the Concorso Italiano, the BMW
Dinner Friday night and at the BMW Coral at Laguna Seca on Saturday and I'm
wondering if other list members are going to be down there next month...

Kevin,

Obviously you don't read Mr. Roadshow! The traffic flow monitors for live
maps (like sigalert.com) set off radar detectors.

I'll be at the Festorics dinner and corral.

Hi Kevin,

Ya, first I thought my V1 was broken. Then, I realized that it works well
everywhere else. So I think that the cops put false radar every mile or so
on 280 :-( It's so frustrating...

Yes, I had thought that was probably the case.
Am now in the process of removing the MC. Disconnecting the line on the
engine side of the firewall is a bit of a problem. Refitting is going to
be worse. Unless there is some way to gain better access.

Not to flame here...

But the suggestion of sacrificing a vixen for an e30 mod would be, to a good
number of people, sacrilage.

Having persued purchasing and having become very familiar with the
construction, care, and feeding of these fine coaches I can only say that
they fully deserve the BMW powerplant they were blessed with.

And after having perused the ad on craigslist.. If it is in good shape with
some maintenance documentation, I would say it's a pretty good deal

My '87 325i just died on me. No warning, running along, then nothing.

I was cruising along then no power and a full compliment of dash lights. The
odd thing is that the CE light was not just on but flickering at engine
speed.

No restarts since. Timing belt is intact, but I didn't see if it turns with
the rest of the engine.

I couldn't get a code out of the computer as the CE light didn't do anything
that made sense.. it fickered and blinked while the tach kept jumping around
and the temperature gauge twitched at about 1/4 scale.

I will have it towed home later today and then will have some time to
contemplate it all as I go in for shoulder surgery on Thursday and won't be
driving for some time after that.

I hope it is simple.

I am not having a good day.

Check the main relay I would. Also the other connectors down there.
Like the engine speed sensor. Those can just stop working.

Total failure always sucks. If it makes you feel any better, one of the
participants at the GGC autocross today lost the rear window out of his
2002 on turn 2. It just slipped right out and ker-smash, all over the
pavement. I think we had to give him a DNF for not finishing his run
with all the parts he started with. Or maybe we had to bump him up a
class for trimming weight off the car. I forget which. :)

Check the main relay I did and the problem gets stranger!

I have a spare main from my foray into fuel pump purgatory two years ago. I
pop in the spare and hit the key. No start... but what is that noise? It is
the main relay, um, screaming.

Normally if you turn the ignition on but don't start you can hear the ICV
humming. Here I have no humming IVC but a main relay that is doing a buzzer
imitation.

Both main relays I have do the same.

I pulled the fuel pump and O2 sensor relays to make sure it was the main
buzzing. With both those relays out the main stops buzzing. Put either in
and it buzzes away.

I did notice that wiggling the ignition switch could get the buzzing to
change. This may be a clue.

I have to go look in the book, but it sounds like there is a high resistance
in series with the main relay coil. The coil can pull in, but the resulting
increase in battery load causes the voltage to drop and the relay to open.
Lather rinse repeat.

At least his still moves...

Did I mention that a week ago I had a run in with an agressive driveway and
punched an exhaust tip through the muffler. The only fun part of it is
setting off car alarms as I pass by.

Check the fusible link in the trunk. It is shrink wrapped to the large
battery cable about a foot from the battery.

That is probably my next step.

I did some digging through the books and schematics and it looks as though I
am not getting good power to the battery junction block at the firewall.
>From that block there is a direct run to both the main relay and the fuel
pump relay. Given that manually actuating my fuel pump test relay does not
result in the pumps running and doing so while the main relay is buzzing
silences the relay, a high resistance fusible link would make sense.

I see that the other side of that terminal block, the one that has no
fusible link, runs the starter, fuse box, and instrument cluster. All that
seems to act normal.
