Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Dear Group, I am looking to buy a tow vehicle. The key here is that I want to spend as little as possible. I was looking at many of the SUV's (1995-1998), and was very surprised at the low towing capacity of most of these vehicles. For example, the Dodge Durango. It has a 5.2L V8, built on a true truck frame, and from the Edmunds site can only tow 3200lbs. I am currently looking at 1995-1998 Ford F-250's. Initially I will probably buy a used open trailer, but I do intend on moving up to an enclosed version. A friend suggested that I want at least 9000lbs in towing capacity. Any ideas, or suggestions on other vehicles that I should be considering? If anyone has a lead on a vehicle, please contact me privately. Thanks for the input! Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> The 1999 Durango was NOT built on a "true truck frame", so I'm sure nothing from 95-98 was either. It's built on a small pickup frame, not sure what Dodge calls them, but Chevy would call it an S10. The Durango is a very INadequate tow vehicle. 2000 or later Tahoe. 5.3 V8, Auto, 4WD, tow capacity of 6500lb or better, and gets 11mph at 90mph with loaded trailer. Should be available for under $18K without issue. Buy the same thing, but with a pickup bed, for $5K less. Brett Anderson KMS > -----Original Message----- > I am looking to buy a tow vehicle. Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I am using a Jeep Grand Cherokee Ltd V8 to tow my open trailer with a 325is race car and sometimes E34s. Never had any problem and very stable to tow. Plenty of power. It is funny as in North America, if you don't have a heavy duty pick up truck, you shouldn't tow. I used to tow an open trailer with a Golf II diesel back in Europe, and never had a problem. The Jeep GC is cheap and easy to maintain, the '96 + versions are better and more reliable, but yet comfortable. If you were to tow a closed trailer with full race gear, then yes you will want a heavy duty truck, but an open trailer, the only thing to consider is the weight of the trailer and the weight of the car. I've heard of it. It's one of the many AC refrigerants that will permanently tie your car to the shop that installed it, because no other shop in the country will risk their AC equipment by servicing it. If it doesn't have R12 or R134a, it's not allowed in my shop for AC work. Period. I'm not going to sacrifice a $5000 AC machine because some cheap ass went outside of main stream. Well, that and it's fun. The "Dude" probably broke the law, from your description, by filling a leaking system. He also isn't exactly interested in doing the job right if he doesn't have an Evac/recharge machine. You can't "fill" an AC system that is not already under vacuum, the system will have bad efficiency if you do because you're trapping air in it. Also, as an FYI, R134a has more than Quadrupled in price in the last 8 months. There are many rumours as to why, most centre around a combination of Dupont closing down production in two of the four plants in the world that produce it, and Dupont's patent running out, and government legislation that is forcing R134a out of the market like they did with R12, due to environmental issues. We have one guy tell us his local shop will convert the car to R134a, including charging the system, for $100 (bullshit), and you saying they want $2500, albeit "little" dollars. What ever happened to real and fair pricing? You MUST change the receiver drier when converting, if you don't, you'll end up with a poor cooling due to it's internal collapse. We're replacing one now from a "cheap" 134a conversion on an E30 M3. This guy was lucky, the blockage did not blow out the shaft seal on his "non compatible" compressor. Don't forget to replace the expansion valve at the same time. I converted mine 89 325i to r134a and a year later its blowing warm air. $200 later, its blowing ice cold again with a new expansion valve. Will staying cool in 100 plus temp this week. Absolutely outstanding for car washing and supposedly for interior cleaning. Holds a lot of water and has some drag when wiping. Doesn't lint. After several washings the mud flaps on the 533i are looking black and shiny and cleaner than I've ever seen them and the rubber bumper strips and black plastic bumper over riders are looking fresh. Paint is looking good. Highly recommended. OK, the domestic side of me will come out and report that they are great for household cleaning. They pick up dust without extra spray, and can be used to clean hardwood floors by dampening without soap. They also do a great job keeping granite counters clean. Use 1 part rubbing alcohol and one part water for easy granite cleaning.
