What does Redline fuel additive do?

Realistically, can it be the difference between getting a CE for O2
sensor too rich and the CE staying off?
Reason:
Hadn't made the correlation before, after setting up the new
airbox/ larger MAF sensor tube setup with an adjustable fpr and 24#
injectors and dynoing to best air/fuel for max power, the CE light that
had nagged the larger maf tub on a stock sensor project stopped
occuring. It stay off for a few tanks of gas then came on again to stay.
I tend to use SL1 more often than not, but if I run out it might be
months or a few thousand miles before I pick it up again.
I had been out of SL1 for a few months, and last week I happened to
be by a local place that sells Redline so I got a few bottles. Put a
good dose of it in the tank and finished a bunch of local trips.
Next morning I get in the car, start 'Jack up and whoa, no CE. Wow.
The only difference is the SL1. Drove about half a tank since then and
the CE is still off.
So could it be the SL1? Is my politically incorrect project ready
for prime time with no CE lights, providing Redline SL1 is used?

Barry

Well I for one, would pay $1 million dollars to a company that can supply an
additive that prevents the check engine light from coming on.

Think about it. There are at LEAST 200 different reasons the check engine
light can come on. Only 20 or so are related to fuel.

WHAT where the faults that resulted in your check engine light?

PS, we don't use RedLine products any more, because the myth has finally
been overcome by the price gouging.

Brett,
Of so many reasons a CE can go on or off, you're quite right that
SL1 making the difference wouldn't seem likely so I hope I asked my
question in a properly pragmatic way.
Here's what I wrote down from the code reader at the dyno shop:
16 E3 E4
F6 F5 44
This was supposed to indicate Oxygen sensor faults. When the CE
lights comes on its during low load cruising on warmer days, ~>70F,
supposedly due to the system not being able lean out enough.
Thanks for any help in sorting out this behavior.

Or an E30 M3. :-)

The driver is Chuck Grafton and he has a nice white E30 M3, he's on
several email lists. I think the Viper lost it entering the track (you
can see the pit out on the video).

The story I heard was that he was braking for the upcoming turn, and
trying to get back on line (which was the E30 M3's line) simultaneously,
and the car got away from him. It doesn't seem like the smartest thing to
do.

The wife is changing jobs, and with that we loose her company car (Ford

(don't wan't to spend to X5 levels). If anybody has any X3 experiences they
feel might be worth sharing (good or bad), I'd be grateful.

I had an X3 3.0 AT loaner for a couple of days while my M5 was in the
shop a couple of months ago, I was really impressed. The interior was
very nice quality, comfortable seats, nice apointments. The car had
Premium package, cold weather package, heated steering wheel.
Handling was firm for a non-sport package car but not overly so,
accleration was decent too. It cornered very well with little body
roll and braking was also very good. I had a 2002 330i 5 Spd which I
drove for 60K miles and I was expecting the X3 to feel more sluggish
and heavy. It really didn't, it compared very favorably to my 330i
except it has more interior room than the 330i especially in the back
seat. I made the mistake of asking my wife if she wanted to drive it
and now she wants one, so we are shopping for them too. There are
some pretty good lease deals out there now if that will work for you.
All in all I was very impressed with the car and am actually looking
forward to having one in the garage.

Regards

I drove one at some promotional thing that they had here in Detroit. I
thought going in I'd roll it <g>, it was a giant autox course. The
damn thing barely had any body roll and they throw you in with a Skip
Barber instructor that won't let you turn the traction control off.
The darn thing won't let you have WOT if the steering wheel is turned
(so no power oversteer). Pretty impressive vehicle.

Carlos.

So the missus and I head to the local dealer this afternoon to look at a new
X3. Nice car, nimble (for a vehicle this size). Doesn't much look like a BMW
from the inside, but it's OK (I'm not too enthusiastic for some reason, car
really doesn't grab me). The base interior is especially hideous... cheap,
really cheap (but leather and wood trim upgrades help).

Along the way, we spot an '02 X5 on the used lot. 3.0l, Alpine white over
tan, 35K miles, CPO, great looking, asking $33K.

Test drive. Heavier (a lot heavier) than the X3. Damn quiet. Looks from the
inside like a BMW. *This* is familiar to me. Wife likes it too... so a bit
of haggling later, we're the proud (and totally unexpected) parents of an '02
X5. Fuel cost will be more than we'd wanted, but this really is a nice car.
And I can carry stuff in it, cool.

Anybody got any BDDTs for this car to share, I'd be grateful.

Subject: <E34> M60 cylinder head cover gasket replacement - questions
Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

hello,

I'm replacing the cylinder head cover profile gaskets on my '95 540i.
The passenger side is leaking pretty well, both into spark plug holes
and externally, so I'm trying that side first. It seems a fairly
straight-forward process but since it's the first one I've done it's
going a bit slowly. I've run into a couple of places where I have
questions.

Referencing the Bentley manual pp. 116-5 and 116-6.

Step 5 says to remove harness connector from oil level sensor in right
side of oil pan and disconnect wiring from wiring guide. I don't see
that wire, is it accessible under the car? I might have to get it
running again and put on ramps to get to it.

Step 7 has me disconnecting lots of connectors. Is there a diagram
somewhere that shows the location of the various sensors and things? I
think I've figured out what most of the parts are but it would be nice
to know for sure what the parts are.

This one has me stifled. Step 8 says remove mounting nuts from wiring
harness ducting and lift off.
I removed the two nuts but the cover doesn't budge much. Seems the
injector connectors are holding it down?
What do I have to do to free that ducting to lift it off?

Step 9 has me disconnecting coolant temperature sensors. The diagram
has black connector labeled C and white is B. Mine are the opposite. I
suppose I'll put mine back the way they were but just wondering if it
matters.

thanks in advance for any tips,
marty

Ok, quick query - do all shift knobs share the same threading? I would like

there is a variety of different shank sizes.

Thanks!

I would say nope, based on aftermarket shift knobs I've had. Momo
usually gives you 4 rubber "hats" I don't know what to call them to
compensate for the different sizes. BMW shift knobs aren't threaded
(at least not since the E30).

I think my favorite one so far (and this is not to get on Rob's good
side <g>) is the Rob Knob I have waiting for a certain E36 I'm picking
in Joisey tomorrow.

Subject: Different fuel?
Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Today I stopped at a station I use periodically to fill up and noticed
while I was filling the tank the Chevron sign was covered with cardboard
and thought something might be amiss. Since I religiously (or could
this be anallly?) use the 93 octane Chevron with Techron additive, this
was a concern to me. The pump still had the Techron logo so I completed
my fillup and asked the clerk inside if they were in process of changing
to something other than Chevron. Her answer was "Oh we haven't been
Chevron for a couple of months now" and also said it no longer has the
Techron additive. She didn't even know what brand it is now. Since I
stopped there just because it used to be Chevron, I asked her why the
pump still had the Techron logo. She seemed a little befuddled and said
that was supposed to be removed. I asked for the manager's name and
phone number and told her he better be willing to pay for a tuneup if my
car got screwed up by this change. I was already kind of mad at myself
for not stopping at my usual station but just figured I would be OK
knowing the other one was on the way to my destination.

I've had several people tell me there's no difference in the fuel itself
and the difference I'm seeing is all in the Techron. Anyone know if
there's any truth to this? Or is this another urban legend that all
petrol comes from the same truck and they just put a different brand
name on it?

TIA

Phil
