In placing the key into the lock, it is not possible to advance the key to any position (minimal movement). There is enough movement to unlock the steering column but not enough to engage position 1 (radio power, etc). In the interest of full disclosure, after fiddling with the blower this weekend, I fiddled under the dash: removed all the panels, included the steering column cover. Nothing else. Any hints? Cheers, Roland - car is really starting to show its 250k miles/16.5 yrs. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Jan 2006 13:11:40 -0800 (PST) From: Richard Dorffer <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Paul Garnier <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, [email protected] Subject: Re: <OT> Any Wurth dealers near Boston MA? Auction details the good stuff, but basically, it's new with all the fancy valve cuts. 12 month unlimited mile warranty against defects. This head has NEVER been overheated. We used an off the shelf head (actually the original from Kathy's MCoupe, on this customer's engine when we rebuilt it, as it was already built and ready to go. Mine is a crazy gold color and I am just wondering if someone painted it or if that was OE. I thought they were black but perhaps BMW had a thing for gold in '95? Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> The valve cover itself is magnesium and is coated with a silver finish. BMW put cosmoline all over the engine to ship the car, it's gold. Probably, yours was never cleaned off properly before delivery, in which case it's now so baked on that the only way to get it off is to completely refinish the valve cover. Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> The plastic cover itself is black. Everything under that is cast iron, which tends to be silver. Perhaps someone had a series of leaky valve cover gaskets that they didn't fix quickly. Oil running over a hot block will tend to turn a golden brown color as it burns. Is the block tacky/sticky at all? might just be a lot of sludge. You can try cleaning the area with a spray down of simple green followed by a careful rinse to see if it cleans off. Watch out for the airbag sensor switches (I usually put baggies on them) and be judicious about spraying under the hood in general. a clean engine compartment helps you to spot fluid leaks sooner rather than later. (rest snipped) Not exactly, see above. Also, the metal valve cover isn't cast iron, it is some type of alloy but I can't say for certain what the composition is. I know we have discussed it before.
